What's the difference? Is one better then the other? Why or Why Not?

Thanks!

From what I have seen there really is not a big difference in the product you get. But, Tivo requires a separate phone line, while the DVR you get from your cable company does not. The Tivo cost a lot more up front, and the DVR costs something like $10 from the cable people. Also, when I last checked (about 3 months ago) Tivo cost more per month, but you could pay something like $300 and get a lifetime pass (For the lifetime of your box I think).

They have slightly different interfaces, but for the most part are the same, with minor differences. If you were looking, I'd say get the DVR from the cable company, it's only like $10 a month.

However Tivo is way better than a DVR. Sure, you either pay $13 per month for Tivo (or pay for Lifetime Warrenty as it will sell with the Tivo if you ever sell it and you will not have to pay the $13 per month) or you get the crappy DVR. If you go to http://www.tivocommunity.com/tivo-vb/index.php? you can find all the pros and cons of both. Just do a search and you'll get a lot of responses.

BTW...WE LOVE OUR TIVO!!!!!

I have a Toshiba SD-H400 that is no longer manufactured but you may still find them on ebay and at Amazon.

I got mine as a close-out for less than $200 after rebate. What I like about this machine is it is a DVD player AND it has a TIVO 80gb DVR built in that doesn't require that I pay a monthly subscription to use it. It uses a basic TIVO service. I don't get all the whistles and bells that the subscription offers like program recommendations etc.. but I do get program updates over the phone line and can program it to record programs in advance and pause/rewind live TV. it's also one less thing I have to hook up to the audio receiver since it combines two things in one.

I think it was discontinue since it's cheap now to add DVD recorders to DVR's. Humax makes similar products: http://www.humaxusa.com/
