...and it won't boot up. I get a DOS message stating there is a Windows error and at the bottom of that screen it says it is preparing to delete. I can turn it off by holding the power button for a few seconds, then turn it back on in a bit, and it will either get stuck on the Toshiba opening screen or go straight to my desktop. There is an icon on my desktop that I don't recognize (all I recall is it has the word 'Oct' in it).

Embarrassingly, I have no idea what to do or who to call.

Many, many thanks for any guidance. - Lynn

I honestly have no idea.
Have you tried booting into safe mode? hit F8 a few times at the startup screen.

Can you browse your computer when it gets to the desktop? Try running a scandisk on the drive.
righclick your C drive and select properties, click tools, and then error checking. Check off the boxes to correct any errors.
It could be anything at this point, drive dying...virus.. I am not sure.

Thanks. Wasn't able to do anything you suggested (no mouse capaibilties, no F8), however I did manage to convince one of the IT guys at work to take a look at the thing (at a cost of one grande Frappucino), so hopefully he'll be able to provide some answers.

Good luck, one grand frappucinio is a pretty good price.

Thanks, Network and Tom - yes, had luck - good luck. Turns out there was almost no room left on the [hard drive?] and a friend started deleting progams that hadn't been used in quite some time. Took a few hours and now, as demonstrated by this post, I am up and running!

An anology I use with my users at work: A hard disk is just like a room. It has limitied physical space. You can only put so much in it before it becomes impractical to use. You just cannot keep putting stuff in it at your heart's content. Eventually, you have to organize it (defrag), move or throw stuff out (delete old programs and files), or expand the room (upgrade hard disk). Or buy a new house with bigger rooms(new computer with a huge hard disk).

My two cents.

RIP

Although it put up a valiant fight, the patient succumbed to brain death on the eve of Friday, September 23. Thanks to all those who unselfishly offered their assistance.

I am currently fostering a laptop in need of a temporary home, and hope to have my very own within days. I'll post baby laptop photos of the little pc soonest.
