I have a Linksys BEFW11S4 router. I've used the wireless function on it in the past but haven't for a while. Until this past weekend, we haven't had any wireless computers in the house. This weekend, my daughter got an Apple iBook. I'm almost done connecting it, but it doesn't get an IP address. When I use "Internet Connect" it gives the name of my router (which is my own name) and says the signal is strong. But no IP address. I got this far by entering the WEP key and the SSID. What's my next step? Thanks. Tom Reingold

Did ya' put that little $ in front of the WEP key? Did you configure your Network (Airport) settings in System Preferences? |

I'm sure you know this, but did you enable DHCP on the router? What about using fixed IP? I hate using DHCP anyway. |

Yes, DHCP is enabled. I tried shoving a fixed IP address into the iBook, but when I did, I couldn't ping anything on the LAN. The iBook said something to the effect of the fact that I had entered the right password and the system was connected. It just doesn't get an address. Everything but the last step is done, whatever that last step is. I didn't realize it was you waving at me yesterday until you had passed. Hi! What do you hate about DHCP?

Have you tried turning off WEP? WEP has acted strange for me and my ibook. I just avoid it completely. I turn off SSID broadcast and I tell the ibook to join the network name. I realize that doesn't work for everyone, but you can at least see if the ibook will connect without WEP enabled.

Tom, re DHCP, I just like to know which IP my machines have. It's an extra source for trouble, and it takes longer to connect. Whenever I have trouble with wireless, I do what npccare wrote, open everything up wide. Once it's working I go and change setting after setting till it breaks again. |

Dave, no. I turned off WEP, and I disabled the access list requirement (based on MAC address). I called Apple, and I stumped the man who helped. He said to call Linksys. Meanwhile, I notice that a Linksys WRT54G has the features I want, so I'll be replacing the router with the new one. It's possible that there's something funky with the router. I tried to upgrade the firmware on the router, just for good measure, but Linksys has changed all its web pages, and their documents no longer match the downloads, rendering both useless.

Not sure if this will work, but it may be worth a shot:
Quote:Talked to linksys again after experiencing additional problems with dropped network, and here are the settings they had me change: http://192.168.1.1/System.asp: MTU: Manual Size: 1100 http://192.168.1.1/Wireless.asp Beacon Interval: 90 (Default: 100, Milliseconds, Range: 1 - 65535) RTS Threshold: 2200 (Default: 2347, Range: 0 - 2347) Fragmentation Threshold: 2200 (Default: 2346, Range: 256 - 2346) No dropped connections at all yet! We'll see if it keeps up.

??? Can the laptop get into the linksys settings? The 192.168.1.1 page? There is something strange going on. Does the ibook get to the internet if you plug it into the router? Have you tried resetting the router? |

I had unexplainable router problems, and eventually I figure out it was the firmware. I would HIGHLY suggest making sure you have the newest firmware. The guys on the phone should be able to help you figure that out, even if their website is not working. |
