I have one laptop. I have one phone jack on main floor. I want to use my laptop around the main floor and not just by that phone jack. The Verizon linksys websites seem to think I'd only want to roam if I have more than one computer to network to the "main computer". Is it possible to do with one laptop?
Thanks

Are you using a dial-up connection or a DSL connection?
If you have DSL, it's easy to set up a wireless network, which your single laptop computer will join.
You would need a wireless router and a wireless network card in your laptop. Your DSL modem would plug into the router which then distributes internet access wirelessly throughout your house.
You don't need more than one computer.

& if you are using dial-up, it is still possible.
You would need a router with a serial port to connect to an external modem. They are typically more expensive than most routers.
Not really worth it for a dial-up connection...

If you are using DSL (and pretty much everyone should at least be using DSL by now for only 14.95 per month) what Bailey said will work.

Yes. Mummite, the reason you can have a single wireless computer is that the router, not your wired computer, provides connectivity over wireless. There's no such thing as a main computer. You can have one computer or any number, and none of them is the master of networking. The router is.

Since we're talking about a single laptop going wireless: why can't I get my Verizon DSL to connect once I hook up to the Linksys? Here's what I'm doing:

The yellow wire that goes from the computer to the ethernet port in the router is being replaced with a blue wire that goes from the router to the Linksys. When the laptop is hardwired, I use both the blue and yellow wires, but neither of those fit between the router and the Linksys, so I use an additional blue wire that is somehow tangled up in the mess and has the plastic nubbies on both sides, and fits. Of course, the phone line is plugged in to the router and the wall. But no DSL connection.

The computer picks up wireless outside my home.

Is this clear to anyone? I appreciate any and all superlative technical assistance.

Many thanks,
Lynn

las, correct me if I am wrong... but I think you are calling your modem your router.

Phone line should go into your modem, and your modem would connect to the WAN port on your router.
With DSL you will need to change the settings of the router to use PPoE and give the router your username and passord.

hard wire your laptop to the router and go into the administration screen (192.168.1.1)
On the first page you see, you should be able to change the connection setting to use PPoE and enter a username and password.

Enter that information, click apply at the bottom.
I haven't used DSL in a while, but that should be the last step. try to start browsing.
