I know I must have done something but I can't figure it out. I'm running XP. I have installed Thunderbird for email. It worked fine up to the begining of this month. Now whenever I try to get mail - the status bar reads - looking up mail.comcast.net and just times out after a while.
I try Outlook Express - times out as well.

I go to another pc - and I can get my mail.

I uninstalled Tbird and reinstalled it.
I confirmed the settings.
I deleted and then added my account.

I think it must be a firewall issue or Nortons - any thoughts as where to start?

What do you have in your Account Settings-->Server settings?

mail.comcast.net? Port 110? Anything else checked off?

Yes on the mail.comcast.net and Port 110.

Checked - check for new messages, check for new msg every 10 mins, Auto download new msgs.

Under the advanced button - on the SMTP tab outgoing msg use the following server - smtp.comcast.net:25.

Close Thunderbird.

Do a ctrl+alt+del to bring up the Windows Task Manager

Selection the Processes tab

Do you see a process called THUNDE~1.EXE?

If so, end the process and then open Thunderbird again.

Try your mail.

Reboot the computer.

When it comes up and everything is settled, bring up the task manager and see if you have that process listed - it shouldn't be there unless you have thunderbird loading on startup.

If it is autoloaded, seeif you mail works. If it's not autoloaded, start thunderbird and check your mail.

If sbenois's suggestions don't work, show us the IP configuration. The trick to doing that is a bit cumbersome.

Press the Start button and then "Run...". Then type "cmd" and then press "OK". You will get a so-called dos-prompt window. Type "ipconfig /all > c:\ipconfig.txt" and press enter. Then type "exit" and press enter.

Then upload a file here to MOL. Press the "Upload attachment..." button in MOL and browse to the file called "c:\ipconfig.txt".

It was Norton's.
I turned it off and low and behold - all my email came flooding in!

Ok - so does any one know how to configure Nortons so that this doesn't happen agian?

Ok - just turned on & off the personal firewall option in Nortons - that was it.

Now how do I configure Nortons - if even I really need it - since I can use XP's firewall?
