It's my birthday this Saturday, and I'm looking to get an ipod. Which ipod would you recommend and why (nano, 20GB, etc.)? Also, 2GB gets you how many hours of music? 4GB? 20GB? Thanks! |

iPod tech specs, http://www.apple.com/ipodnano/specs.html How and where you plan to get the most use out of an iPod may help to determine which one to get. |

Thanks Monster. I plan to get most of the music from my current CD collection, and maybe some from the itunes store. I listen to music of all styles, from a two minute song by Moby to a two hour symphony by Mahler. I know I want to upload all nine Beethoven symphonies, totaling around 6 hours of music or more. Maybe bigger is better, eh? |

You're welcome You don't neccesarily have to have a bigger one, but if you feel the need to have a greater selection of music available at any given time, then yes a bigger one is better. If you don't mind deleting music and adding it as you think you need it, then the size may not matter. If you would like something light and less bulky for working out, doing work in the yard, or whatever, then perhaps a Shuffle or Nano is the thing. Unless you have to have a Nano, I would hold off until at least the second revs. come out, there have been some issues with the screens cracking on the Nano (of course I don't know what kind of abuse they went through), and perhaps they won't be USB 2 only. If the USB 2 only doesn't matter, and if you don't think you would be so rough on a Nano to warrant being worried about cracking the screen, then you may want to go for one. I have checked the Nano out a couple of times at the Apple Store and really like them, they are so freakin' light, just toss it in you shirt pocket and off you go, it would be easy to forget it's in there.

cool. I don't know much about the itunes software. Is it possible to switch between different playlists without deleting music?. For example, I'll have playlist #1 which might have the complete Beethoven Symphonies and some rock stuff, and playlist #2 which might have jazz and Baroque music. Is it possible to only load playlist #1? If this is possilbe, I can get a smaller ipod and just switch playlists. Make sense? |

I have the 40gb photo, which I got just after they stopped making them so I got a great deal. I love having all my music on it, but I sometimes look at folks with the smaller models on the train with some envy. I would definitely go to the apple store where you can lay hands on the different models. |

Just something to consider when buying an iPod: I have a 10gb 2nd generation iPod. It's full and holding about 9.3 gbs of music. Hard drive specs never match actual size and the software to run the device takes up space too. I rip all my music at 192 or higher and it's holding 1827 songs. Apple will tell you that for every 2 gb you can hold 500 songs. This is true if you are downloading 128 kbps songs from i-Tunes or ripping your music at 128 - the lowest quality sampling rate. Unless you are on a budget, I'd get the biggest one - especially if you listen to classical. And Happy Birthday! |

thanks Eric! I've changed my mind again - the 20GB model looks like the best choice. The 4GB nano is $229 (with educational discount). The 20GB photo ipod is $269. Not a hard decision. $40 for an extra 16 gigs. |

I think the larger one is a great choice, unless you're going to use it at the gym. I have a 40Gig, have almost 3000 songs, two audio books, plus, until recently, I've used mine as an external drive for backup for all my digital photos. The 20Gig iPod has composite audio and video out, the Nano doesn't. That's nice if you ever want to view your photos on TV, makes a nice slideshow, with music from the iPod. If compactness isn't an issue, go with the iPod Photo. |
