How can I determine where an email came from? I know the screen name and using 'Readnotify' and 'Didtheyreadit,' I've been able to determine they're using Comcast to acess the internet; but can't remember how I use to find out who the account comes back to. I tried 'Whois' with no luck... Thanks! |

It really can be difficult. Its fairly easy for a spammer (or someone else) to mask the true original sending account. This is not freeware, but it does come with a 15 day trial... http://www.visualware.com/internetsecurity/resources/tutorials/email.html |

If your mailer lets you look at the original mail, complete with header lines, you can figure out which computer the mail originated on. You have to look at the lines that start with "Received:". Those lines are added to the message each time it goes through a relay host. They are added to the top, so the lowest "Received:" line in the file indicates the originating computer. If you send me a copy of the mail, I can tell you where it came from. Of course, even that stuff is possible to forge. Email is just a file, and anyone can create a file. And as Case says, you can claim to be whoever you want. Remember, when you configured your mail program, it asked you what your email address is. You could have lied.
