Can anyone recommend a local repair person or shop to work on a PC? They gotta be really good and really up on the latest adware, spyware, viruses, patches, fixes, XP error messages, software, hardware, etc. No amateurs, part-timers, students, high-school teachers or wannabes, please.

THANK YOU

I can probably do it for you - are you having specific Adware problems? We'd probably have to do a bit of registry work to clean things up completely.

Hopefully you've got some kind of antivirus loaded and running; the rest of it we can handle with "free for personal use" software.

Let me know...

Thank you all that responded here and via PL. The error message is:

"Bad image checksum. The heading checksum does not match computed checksum."

I'll follow up with you this morning.

Did you do an upgrade to XP or put in memory recently?

Is that the EXACT error message or is there a code

Actually its my son's computer and I'll have to get the exact wording from him when he gets home from school. I don't know about the code.

And no, he did NOT do an upgrade to XP or put in memory recently (at least I don't think so).

His computer is NOT online, so it can't be viruses or spyware.

See if it's this message:

C0000221 - Bad Image Checksum. User32.dll is possibly corrupt. The header check sum does not match the computed check sum.

Even if he hasn't installed memory lately, it could be that a stick of memory is bad (or is going bad), if he has more than one stick in he can try swapping the sticks and restarting to see if the problem persists. It could also be that a memory slot is bad.

If the error message mentions the "user32.dll" file, follow the steps at the following link and see if that fixes the problem.

I would try the RAM first.

This can be an easy fix or a frustrating one.
First thing I would try is the RAM... If you have 2 sticks, try using 1 and then the other.

I guess you haven't upgraded to SP2 or anything? This just happened out of nowhere?

If you decide to buy memory, www.newegg.com is a very inexpensive (and fast) option. Don't buy it unless you're sure that's the problem, of course.

While I love newegg, I have found that often the best prices for memory on the web are at www.isellsurplus.com

Do they sell name-brand memory? I'm all for saving a few bucks, but generic memory makes me sad...

Greetings,

This is Soulful Mr T's son. This is the exact error message:

STOP: c0000221 {Bad Image Checksum}
The image urlmon.dll is possibly corrupt. The header checksum does not match the computed checksum.

This message comes up after the windows load screen. I tried swapping the RAM sticks but it still didnt work. When i tried using only one module, it didnt even make it to the Dell splash screen (the first thing you see when its booting up).
Im using a Dell Dimension 8200 if that makes any difference.

I can fix this. PM me with a phone number, please. It shouldn't take more than 15 minutes or so.

Its either a simple case of a corrupted DLL, or its bad memory. I don't think you can run on a single memory stick, so I'll bring a handful over to test with.

My money is on bad memory, which means its probably a file problem.

Try booting off the XP CD. When you do that, there is an option to repair the existing installation on your hard disk.
