Can anyone recommend an online faxing service? I'm referring to one of those deals where you get a local number to give to people, and you then receive the fax as an email. eFax costs 13/month, plus you get much spam. Looking for something a bit cheaper. Any recos?

callwave.com used to be free. I liked it, and they hardly spammed me at all. Now I have efax and jfax. I have their free service, since I don't need to send faxes. If you're willing to pay, maybe you should check out callwave.com

I'm actually surprised that I get my own inbound number for free with efax and jfax, but I sure don't mind. They're toll numbers, but that's OK with me.

I don't get any spam on my efax, but since I wanted a 973 number, mine isn't free.

Efax is free if you only need an incoming line. I use it for incoming, and my fax modem for outgoing. However my fax line has a 208 area code.

And yes there is some 'spam', but it's never more then one e-mail a week. That's nothing compared to the hundreds that I get on 'comcast' accounts. Cialis or Viagra anybody? I can give you plenty of places where to get it.

After some good advice from MOLers, I got an eFax account through my NYTimes subscription for free. It's also a 208 area code number. I only get a few faxes a month at most, so I didn't want to pay a monthly fee. So far, no spam, and it all seems relatively easy.

The only downside, I suppose, is that it requires their software to read the faxes. But, you can easily print it to a PDF (at least on the Mac...) if you need to share it with others.
