What is the difference between 768K and 12.0 Mbps? Which is faster? And is it really that noticable? Thanks! |

You would notice the difference! Edit: wait... I think my numbers are a little off... let me think for a minute. Edit 2: Okay I was converting it in my hear to bytes, but that doesn't really matter. It is a lot faster! 12 Mbps would be 12,000kbps |

In lay terms, 12 Mbps is 12 million bits per second, and 768Kbps is 768 thousand bits per second. So it's over 15 times faster. The short answer is that the difference can be very noticeable, all other things being equal. I'll leave it to someone else to give the long answer. |

Higher speed = higher premium Do you need all that speed? Are you playing multi-player games online? Are you streaming video? Are you downloading loads of large files on a very frequent basis? Or are you just writing and receiving small emails and posting to MOL?

I suspect that you won't get 12Mbps, but instead 1.2 Mbps. Basically we're talking about 750,000 compared to 1,200,000. Having said THAT, if you're browsing the internet and sending email, using MOL, etc, 768K will be just fine (really!). I suspect this question relates to the fact that Verizon is now offering a $15/mo 768Kbps service, as opposed to their $30/mo 'regular' DSL. The thing is, 'regular' DSL can vary in speed dramatically based on the condition of your copper phone line and how far away from the Central Office you happen to be. FINALLY (isn't this boring?) these speed ratings are known as 'optimal burst' speeds.... meaning, if you're going to download a truly large file, you probably won't get a sustained download rate anywhere near that fast. Short answer - for most users, 768K is absolutely fine (and a good DSL deal!). |

Thanks all! Another question. Would using wireless make a difference in connection speed? I haven't set up the router yet; but if going wireless there would be a noticable difference, maybe I should keep the faster speed? You're right Case I was asking because of Verizon's 768Kbps. Not sure what I'm 'supposed' to have but the icon says Verizon Online/ Speed 12.0 Mbps / Sent (numbers change) / received (numbers change). It doesn't seem all that fast to me. I was told I could try out the 768 and if I don't like it there's no penalty to switch back. Network- For some reason the icons show two internet connections. The second one says 'Local Area Connection 2' / Speed 12.0 Mbps / Status: Limited or no connectivity. If I try to get rid of the second connect, repair it or brigde it (whatever that means) I loose my connection completely. Could / would that slow things down? Thanks Rastro That's a very big difference! I thought it was going to change over this afternoon, so far it hasn't. I already thought it was slow, so something tells me I am not going to be happy. Even if it saves me $15. Gatica- I don't think I need a lot of speed. I don't play games on line, and don't download music. I really don't download much, except graphics. I don't like how it seems to take forever to go between pages and other websites. |

Wireless wont make any noticeable difference. If your computer and router both have newer wi-fi (802.11g), data rates will be approx. 54Mbps. If you have an older 802.11b router or wi-fi card, you'll be limited to 11Mbps. BUT.. I doubt you'll ever exceed either of those rates with cable or DSL modems.

The speed from a website to a computer in your home can't ever be faster than the connection going into your home, so wireless won't ever make that faster.

and if the web site you are accessing is "SAS" (slow as sh¡t), it won't make much difference, you can't get the data faster than it is offered. |

That is just listing you have 2 network devices. 1 Ethernet and 1 Wireless. Your Wireless speed is up to 12 Mbps but that will not be your internet connection speed. |

Try using these websites: http://infospeed.verizon.net/ http://www.dslreports.com/stest These sites will give you a measure of your internet connection speed. Also, the real test of a personal Internet connection is the user experience - are you happy, or unhappy? It sounds like you've got some performance issues... and those MAY NOT BE RELATED TO YOUR INTERNET SERVICE! Take a moment to run Spybot and see what the results are; if you have dificulty doing this please PM me. |
