Can't figure out what internet service is best for the most basic of web use? We have only one computer(laptop) and it is wireless-ready, although that doesn't matter to us for home use. I want to keep the monthly bill as low as possible. Is it best to combine it with the cable bill or to use Verizon etc? |

Verizon DSL is, by far, the best value out there. You can get 768 Kb service for $15/month. And with that, you can have one phone line for voice and data simultaneously. This makes it cheaper than dialup if one line for voice is enough for you. I have comcast cable modem service because I prefer higher speeds, but if your needs are basic, you can't beat Verizon DSL. They give you a router these days, and they may even give you the wireless equipment. I helped someone in Maplewood, and she had Verizon-supplied wireless equipment. She couldn't remember if she paid them for it.

I'd suggest verizon dsl - cheaper than cable, adequate broadband, and MUCH faster than dial-up, which is about that same price. Go wireless since you have the laptop. You'll most likely appreciate the flexibility. They're offering 14.95/mo for a year with 768k download speeds, very adequate for basic web use. You need to be close enough to them though, so you should check availability. |
