I have a laptop that my wife and I share. We have several other computers (desktop and laptop), and don't experience this problem... I installed firefox on the laptop. it works fine for her, but when I log in as me, it doesn't work at all. No homepage loads, and I cannot go to any web sites. The program runs. I get the firefox window to come up, but no homepage loads, and no buttons or menus work. I have fast user switching enabled, and while writing this, I downloaded and installed Firefox one more time. No dice on this account (me), but then I switched to my wife's account, and it worked fine. Windows XP SP2 Firefox 1.0.7 Any ideas? |

Is it set to use a proxy server? It shouldn't be.

No, it's not. What's really weird is that NOTHING loads. The program doesn't seem to complete loading itself, since even the menus don't work. But if I switch to my wife's account on the same computer (even while I'm still logged in), everything works fine. |

That is strange. Does it list the program in the task manager?

Checking some extensions... strangely, those installed for one user do not show up for the other. |

Well, I cleared out absolutely everything, including registry entries and any folder or file related to firefox. Then reinstalled. Seems to be working. I'm curious about what cold have caused it, though. Probably an errant extension, but I'm surprised they have to be installed for each user. Thx for the ideas. |

You could spend a lot of time reproducing the problem. I think it's not worth the effort. This stuff can drive you nuts. Good thing you managed to solve it.

OK, it seems that his happens with a corrupt file in the "chromes" folder of Frefox. If this should happen again, go to. C:\Documents and Settings\****your user name****\Application Data\Mozilla\Firefox\Profiles There will be a default folder in there. Open that. Rename the chromes folder to soemthing else. Restart the broswer and firefox will recrate the folder and should work. You will probbaly have to end firefox in your task manager first though. |

What I found a bit bothersome was that uninstalling the software did not remove this (or any of the user-specific data. Not even an option while uninstalling to do so. I'm a technologist, but this was a pointless issue. I should have somply been able to uninstall the saoftware and reinstall it. I understand the advantages of leaving the user preferences on the machine, but to not have the option of remving them means that countless files and registry entries are left scattered on my computer. I know all software does this. I just was hoping for better from Mozilla. |

I agree strongly. I think the Windows registry is an awful idea, which makes it hard for software writers to write good software. The registry just grows over time, making the machine slower. The best fix is to reload the entire system, which is not feasible in all cases.
