I'd like to be able to send faxes with my imac. My brand new 1.9 GHz iMac came with a modem cable but no modem. And add-on USB modem from Apple costs $49. Ouch. I noticed in my junk bin I had a no-name USB-to-serial adaptor. I got help from the comp.sys.mac.hardware.misc newsgroup: someone told me to use the USB Probe program to find out who manufactured. Wow, I was able to download the driver from Taiwan and install it. Now what? I plan to install an external modem, from my junk bin. How do I get it going? Thanks.

Did you get it working yet? After plugging the modem in & turning it on, open the document that you want to fax. From the file menu choose print, click on the Fax button, select the modem pop-up button and choose your modem from the menu (since you installed the driver it should be available). Next to the field for the fax number you will notice the Address Book icon, you can select it to choose a fax # from your address book, if you have put one in. To recieve faxes, go to your system prefs and select "print & fax", then faxing, and set that up. You can choose to have the fax emailed to an adress you specify, you can have the fax automatically printed, & you can have it saved to folder. If you are expecting a fax, make sure the computer is set so that it doesn't go to sleep or shut itself down, you don't have to be logged in to recieve a fax.
