This may be a stupid question, but....

Where is the option key on a PC keyboard? I need to do the following key command: option-shift and a number. I know how to do this on a mac, but not a PC. Help.

I think you are looking for the ALT key.

The alt key didn't work. I tried all the combinations: shift-ctrl, shift-alt, alt-ctrl, etc. Nothing worked.

What exactly are you trying to do and with what program?

edit: not sure what you are trying to do, but did you try the windows key (the one with the little flag on it--if your keyboard has one)

I am using the music notation program called FINALE. To enter rests with the typing keyboard, you have to press option-shift and then a number which corresponds to a type of rest. For example, option-shift 5 will produce a quarter rest.

I've tried the windows key too. The instructions in FINALE say to use option-shift. It works fine on my mac, but not on the PC.

Guess you got a base model keyboard without any options...

Did you check the support page on their website?

And did you try all three buttons? (Stupid question I know)

There is no option key on the keyboard. Check your instruction manual, make sure it is the Windows version versus the Mac version.

The version is for both PC and Mac. I checked the online manuel on the PC and it said to use the option-shift # to get rests.

Yes, I tried all three buttons. I'll try giving the tech support a call.

Thanks!

[edit: I called FINALE tech support. They said I have to use the numbers above the letters, not on the right side of the keyboard. And use control-shift. They need to fix their instruction manual - it's wrong!]

There is no, and has never been, an option key on a windows keyboard. So their instructions were wrong from the beginning.

ComposerJohn,

I'll ask my son when he comes home from school this afternoon. He uses Finale on his PC and should know what you need to do.

edit: Oops, just noticed that you got your answer. Those were some screwy directions.
