1. MS Explorer is suddenly sluggish on my PC but Mozilla is working fine. Any suggestions? 2. It seems like ever printer I buy craps out within a year. I need color. Don't need scanner/copier. Anyone in love with their printer? |

The only thing I can suggest is the following (for item 1) 1. Tools/Internet Options - delete cookies, delete files (select 'delete all offline content'). 2. Run Spybot S&D 3. Run AdAware 4. Run Cleanup URLS are for the last three items... these are shareware, but I typically suggest a small donation ($5?) because the stuff is so darn useful - its up to you, of course. http://www.safer-networking.org/ http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/ http://www.stevengould.org/software/cleanup/

Thanks. I did all of that and still, pages won't load on MS Explorer and they will load on Mozilla. I'll let you know if I figure it out. |

hmmm. I'd like to see this, actually, but in the meantime try this: http://www.majorgeeks.com/download3155.html Go ahead and load it, run the scan... but please do NOT make any registry changes. Send me the log, please. Incidentally, can you tell me what pages you're having problems with? Maybe its some oddball java or activex problem....

Yeah, there are a few questionable items on the list. I need some time to look them up, I'll PM you when I'm done. If you can give me the URLs that you're having trouble with, that would be useful. |

I agree with Case's suggestions to see if you can find malware on your computer, but I still have to ask, Why bother with IE? I very rarely need it. I use Opera most of the time and Mozilla Firefox for the rest. The color inkjet printer market is much too price-driven. This has squeezed out durable printers. Laser printers are more likely to last longer, and they are probably cheaper per page to use, but of course, they cost more to purchase. Sorry, I can't recommend a specific model. I have found the folks at J&R Music Word (http://www.jr.com) to be honest and helpful. Perhaps someone there can steer you helpfully in selecting a durable printer. Or you could just consider them to be disposable items, as lamentable as that sounds.

Holy crap. The problems have disappeared. I wasn't able to load this board or St. Louis Cardinals Talk on IE but could on Mozilla. Now I can. Not sure which thing did it but I seem to be fine now. I really appreciate all of you being so generous with your time, expertise, and effort. Case, I'd still love to hear what you think I should do but please don't put yourself out any more than you already have. And, once again, apologies for the double post. I just didn't know if anyone really looked at this part of the site. Now I know. Happy holidays. Jeff |

My MOL profile has MOL emailing me every message to the technology section, so if I can help, I usually do so quickly.

The routine I sent you isn't a bad thing to run on at least a monthly basis. I'll PM you with some of the potentially troublesome items from your log - glad to see things have cleared up a bit! |

I'd get rid of this for sure: O16 - DPF: {3A7FE611-1994-4EF1-A09F-99456752289D} - http://install.wildtangent.com/ActiveLauncher/ActiveLauncher.cab I hate wild tangent. Hate, hate hate. Run Hijack This!, click the box for the item I gave you, and then hit "fix". Try to resist the urge to experiment with Hijack This, though - exciting results can occur. Everything else seems fairly benign. I know you have probably heard this before, but if you're not using AOL for dial-up service, chances are excellent that you don't really need it at all. If you have DSL or Cable service, you can get an email address from them... or yahoo, gmail, etc. Just a thought. |

Thanks again Case. You're preaching to the choir about AOL. My daughter likes it. She rules. |

I have Hijackthis running at startup every time I boot. It's a great tool - if you set the parameters right and get a clean baseline, it will pop up with a dialog any time something is added to the registry or the operating system. Unless I installed whatever new additions it finds, it gets nuked from safemode. |

Yeah, I'm happy to have found HT. Spybot can also be set to alert you (real time) to registry changes... I think its called "tea timer" or something odd like that.
