Anybody find earphones that stay in your ear? The ones that came with my iPod don't fit in my ears at all, and constantly fall out. |

Yes, Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia headphones are awesome--comfortable and sound teriffic. You can buy better headphones if you are willing to spend >$100, but for $20 (from Amazon), these are great. They come in black or ipod white (I forget where, but I saw it described somewhere as "mug me" white). |

Etymotic Research makes some great earphones. The ones that come with the iPod are crap and should be replaced immediately.

the Etymotics are dangerous, in the regard that their IN EAR style effectively BLOCKS OUT ALL SOUND COMPLETELY. The only thing you hear is the high fidelity sounds of your music. So when that 10 ton NYC bus barrels into you, well....Don't say I didn't warn you. After my good friend spent over a hundred dollars on those beauties and he bragged about how the sound quality was the best he ever heard, a few months later he admitted that he had almost been run over by 10 bike riders and a few cabs and now refuses to wear them outside of the house, which even he admitted was when he needs them most. |

I had exactly the same problem and for some bizarre reason felt disloyal switching but finally did. For the reasons noted here (and others like hearing the cord rub against your clothing) I could never do the ety's or shures or custom molds, at least as primary, for me meaning out and about commuting, walking, phones, even though I'm sure they're fabulous sonically. I'm embarrassed to say but very pleased to have the Bang & Olufsen phones that go over ear and are super adjustable, downtown black and waaaay cool. Sound good too, not cut off from world. Total stranger let me try his first but you can also try at new B&O store in Summit before deciding to drop the coin. Less than Ety's but still ridiculous. Want to try mine, PL me. Listen well and be well, all. David PS Come w/ cool functional little leather case too and they ought to... |

Any recommendations for ipod headphones for teenagers? Is it better to get them headphones that sit on the ear, instead of in the ear? I'm planning on replacing my son's ipod-issue earbuds. I give him the speech about protecting his hearing, and I think he's pretty good about not blasting the music, but... |

Another earphone question. Where can I get the cheapest earphones? My friend is buying an ipod from somebody with me as the 'middle person.' I didn't know until tonight it didn't come with the earphones. Guess it didn't cross my mind to ask because I expected my friend to toss them and buy new ones. When I mentioned giving her a website to get earphones from she said something to he efect she'll just wash the old ones. Since the old ones no longer exist I figured I'd just buy her a pair. |

You get them very cheaply at the dollar store, but you won't be satisfied. You can get some OK earphones at Walgreen's for about $15. And the sky is the limit.

JTA - so you're going to buy her a poor sounding pair that may be thrown out instead of telling her the original headphones that comes with iPod are gone? Go to Radio Shack. |

Eric- Something like that. The problem is my friend was looking to buy an iPod for he daughter for Christmas and asked me for help. Her daughter wanted the 'mini,' not shuffle, which isn't made anymore. She didn't want to spend more then $125-$150 for it. I tried to tell her she could get a brand new Nano for $50 more; not the kid wants the other one. Good enough I found one for her and have been acting as the 'middle person.' When I committed to it I was unaware the cover wasn't included, which wasn't a big deal because it doesn't come with a new one either. That added $25 on to the cost. I never thought to ask about the earphones because I figured what parent would want their child to use someone else's earphones (the kind that go in your ear, not the ones that sit on your ear). My friend had asked me the other day if I had picked the iPod up yet;, I explained I didn't but I spoke to the person selling it. I informed her the person gave will be giving me the URL for earphones she can buy. My friend was not happy with this and told me the earphones should be included and she'd just wash them. Well, I didn't have the nerve to tell her the earphones didn't exist. After speaking with her yesterday, I have no doubt she would have said she didn't want the iPod without the earphones So, my plan was to just buy cheap ones, cause it comes with cheap ones anyway. Let her buy better ones. I also now know the directions might be lost, as well as the cord to hook the iPod up to the computer. At this rate my friend should have just bought a new one. I don't plan on telling my friend this because I know she'd say 'foget it.' I might just go buy a Nano and give her that. |

JTA, sometimes I see you offering to do all these nice things on MOL and I wonder to myself, "doesn't she get burned all the time?" I mean it's great to be helpful (sometimes) but you are constantly going out of your way. Which is great. Just in this case it looks to me like you have gotten yourself WAY TOO INVOLVED for someone else. My advice is, well.... BAIL. Stop helping. Knowing you from MOL, I don't suspect you will. As for what to do regarding getting new headphones. You can get ok, good enough headphones for about 10 bucks at the drug store or many dept stores (like Target, Best Buy, Circuit City, Walgreens, Walmart, Kmart, etc.) You also mentioned that the ipod headphones are bad. I just want you to know that ipod headphones are not BAD per se. I might go so far as to say that they are better than the free headphones you get with any relatively inexpensive audio device. Some people swear by them. And the ipod headphones are DEFINITELY (at least a little) BETTER than the $10 pair you will buy at any of the stores I just mentioned. The only reason I clarify this is because while alot of people think they are great, many audiophiles think they suck. Any of the people in this thread bragging about their $100 dollar AND UP headphones in this thread wouldn't be caught dead using their ipod headphones. They would lose all their audiophile street cred if they were caught dead using them. Point being? Create another post here on MOL, a new one. Make the subject line say something like, "Anyone have a pair of the standard ipod headphones that they want to get rid off?" I suspect that someone here will help out a nice person as yourself. I myself can't help you since I am not rich enough to be an audiophile and I just use the standard white ones that came with my ipod. |

Everything worked out fine. The cord has been found as well as new earphones. Good ones too! True Alley, I have been burned. Some of my friends get mad at me for some of the things I do. I'm glad to hear someone say the ipod earphones are decent. My nephews both have ipods only because one won his in a Tricky Tray and six months later the other earned one for the amount of items the two of them sold for a school fundraiser. They both have the Shuffle and seem happy with the sound. I'm getting the Nano for Christmas from my mom and and my three sisters. (they all pitched in for it) |

You don't need to spend a lot of money to get headphones that sound a lot better than Apple's white ones. I use these Koss headphones and love them. They are standard headphones and they are "open air" so your neighbor on the train will be able to hear them a little if you're cranking them but they have great sound. |

Before investing in expensive earbuds, give these Griffin Earjams a try. They snap onto the existing ipod earbuds and they make a huge difference in the sound, the seal and the comfort. http://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B00030EDZU/qid=1134740138/sr=8-3/ref=pd_bbs_3/0 02-2657691-2029658?n=507846&s=electronics&v=glance

Did I mention that the Sony MDR-EX51LP Fontopia headphones are only $20 from Amazon and that you can even get them in white--lest you risk damaging the precious and delicate aesthetic of the Apple designers? Portable headphones, especially if you are running around with them and commuting with them, only have a litmited lifetime before they break. I can't justify spending more then about $25 on a pair of portable headphones. Give the Sony's a shot. They are comfortable, they stay in and they sound good (because they are the in-ear style, you pick up better bass). |

I sure wish I had read this thread before getting new ipod ear buds for Christmas. The standard ones that came with the ipod mini were horribly uncomfortable, but these ear buds totally distort the sound. It's like listening to an old tinny cassette player - treble way too loud and almost no bass sounds at all even after doing all the adjustments I cuold figure out how to do. Next step is to check out sbenois' recommendation, but the only ones available on amazon are used pairs, and that makes me a little nervous. And I hear you loud and clear TomD about the Sony option, but given Sony's recent ignoble practices in the world of downloadable music, TS has declared a household boycott of Sony. Hm, I may have to violate the boycott to get to listen to my ipod again... But I'd love to hear any other suggestions out there. And I'm really not enought of an audiophile to justify spending more than $50 on this upgrade. |

When I press the apple earbuds into my ears, they sound decent. But when I let go, they slip out, and the bass fades away sharply. I still like over-the-ear headphones whose strap goes over the top of my head. It's a dying breed. I just got a pair by Sony at Scotty's Music. My previous pair was by Panasonic. I paid about $25 for each paid. They're so big that they double as earmuffs while I walk my dog. I'm not much of an audiophile, either.
