My MB just went (bad capacitors). I don't want to build everything new, including the OS. So what I'm looking for is a MB that is close enough to my old one, which was an ECS K7S5A Pro with a SiS 735 chipset. I need something that will fit an Athlon XP (I think it's a 2000+), I also want it to be reasonably cheap. On NewEgg I can get what I'm looking for, for less then $50, but it will take me a few days to get it. Is there a retailer around here that has what I'm looking for, for a reasonable price. Or does any of you computer junkies have an unused board that they would part with, for a few bucks? |

Why not just replace the capacitors? I see http://www.geeks.com has some great deals on motherboards but they probably wouldn't be faster than newegg. Sorry I can't offer any real help.

Earlster, if you can find a retailer near Grand Central, I can pick it up for you. You can reimburse later. I do get home late, though, around 7:30-8:00.

Newegg ships very quickly. They are located in NJ, and the longest I have waited for something from them is has been 2 days. |

There's Golden Computers on 22, near Best Buy, or the place in South Orange on SO Ave. Gio Tech? |

Thanks everybody for the good ideas. Especially Gatica for offering to pick it up. I ended up splurging. CompUSA (Yes, I know what I said) had an Athlon64 + Motherboard on sale, at a price that was on par with NewEgg. So, know I'm moving some parts and boards around and the new board is going to be my new super fast development box. |

Let us know how it worked. If you don't mind, what are the specs, and how much did you pay?

Tom, it's an Athlon 64 3200+ for $166 and a Gigabyte F8NSC-939 Motherboard with a nForce3 chipset for $84 I had all the other components 2x512 MB of memory GeForce4 Ti4200 graphics And since I have a MSDN subscription, I have some licenses for the 64bit version of windows. Most of the setup went really smooth, however nVidia has no x64 drivers for my graphics card. Searching around on the web, I found some hacked drivers that seem to work pretty well. As for the computer that I really wanted to fix, oh weel that's gotta wait till tomorrow, it's getting the MB that I replaced with the new stuff, and there is nothing exiting about it. It's my domain controller, storage server. |
