Where to begin..
First, Apple doesn't make the 40GB anymore, it's now 30 or 60.
Those play video, music, photos etc., and are a much better buy in terms of storage. They can be used as an external drive to backup important data, or as a portable drive to move data.
The Nano is much smaller and lighter, uses flash memory instead of a hard drive, and typically, because of the smaller memory, would only be used for music, though you can store and view pics on it's small but crystal clear display.
The 2GB Nano is 199.00, 4GB is 249.00.
The 30GB iPod is 299.00, 60GB is 399.00.
It comes down to this: what do you want to do with it?
Personally, I'd go for the 30GB iPod. While bigger, I like all the options it affords, and I'm likely to buy some videos too.

The Nano use solid state no moving parts therefore high probability of a long reliable future. The 60Gb unit uses a miniture hard drive - I own an older unit with a 20 Gb hard drive - I've had 3 replacements in 26 months - the problems were all related to my daily usage - I run. sweat and stress out the unit - had the extended warranty so the replacements were covered - plan to get the small Nano to use strictly when I jog - I think it will take a beating better. Taken purely from a storage standard - you get more musical storage for the buck the larger the capacity you go. Just do the math and you can see my dividing the storage size by price what your paying per gigabyte of storage. So the answer it really depends on how you plan to use the device.

nano 2GB should cost $200
nano 4GB should cost $249

I recently got a nano 4GB and love it.

However, if you want your complete music collection on it, then you should get one of the regular iPods. It really depends on what you want to do with it.

For what I use it, I prefer not having a hardrive, but I wanted the iPod user interface. The nano is just so slick.

Right now, the 30GB Video iPod is the best for your money unless size is a serious issue for you.
It is still fairly small, but with at least 7.5 times the storage, and Video playback should you ever want to use that. It is without a doubt worth the extra $50 for the size difference.

wait?
Maybe.
I don't expect any huge changes to the ipod in the short term though.
I DO expect lots of changes over time - Apple needs to keep it fresh to attract new and repeat business.
What are you suggesting the wait about? Rumored wi-fi or other updates?

Whatever you buy, rest assured that within 6 months there will be a better model for less than you paid. It's just a reality of Apple.

Yes wait, every Macfanatic knows that when MacWorld is so close, wait before you buy, unless you need it right now of course, or if it's late Tuesday and Apple hasn't announced anything.
