A consultant I work with (she is remote in Colorado), cannot get onto Webex meetings -- which she needs to conduct! She says recently she has also not been able to use the secure pages -- can't order from Amazon, etc. She is *not at all* computer savvy. I've tried talking her through resetting her MS Explorer (v 6.x) settings, but it does not change anything) She says he Norton AV is turned off, pop up blockers, etc -- but I would think the clue to this problem is her inability to get into *any* secure site pages. Thx Pete

Try a different browser to see if she can isolate it as a network problem or a browser problem. |

Its almost certainly a broswer problem, though I suppose an aggressive Net Security package might be the culprit as well. This is the famous question, the answer to which is usually "Nothing! I swear!".... but what changes were made to the system recently? New software, etc? Anything? Assuming its Microsoft, have her put amazon.com in as a trusted site (tools, options, security are the menu choices). |

Maybe something about the proxy settings. Maybe there's a proxy server which is down.

Don't you have a manifesto to write on your yellow pad? Bombs to build? Hairy guys to stalk? Since you're so busy (wink wink), ask one of your 'technology advisers' what its all about: Seems reasonable to me - after all, who really uses the Internet for anything? These technology experts must be VERY highly placed if they're 'advising' you... gosh, its almost like the President's advisors, huh? I wonder if the highly-placed technology insiders are also hot women? Damn... its amazing how much roomy it is inside someone's head - who knew all these people could live there? I guess made-up people take up a lot less room than real people. |

I have Norton Internet Security and sometimes when I have problems like this it is because the system defaults to the "child" account at logon and most of the time this is fine for the sites we are visiting. However, occasionally a site will have an upgrade or something that requires a prohibited (by Norton) download. When I log on to the supervisor account and then try to go to the desired location it downloads whatever has been causing the problem and then everything is OK again (even on the child account.) This may not apply to this person's situation, but I thought I'd post it just in case. |

Maybe the SSL settings in IE were somehow disabled/unchecked? By the way, what does she consult on?

I had this problem with my old computer and it was browser related. My computer was so limited in speed and RAM that it was unable to run a current enough version of my browser software for me to be able to access secure sites. I solved the problem by getting a faster computer with a lot more RAM and ROM and then upgrading to a current version of my browser. Can you talk her through chgecking to see what her courrent resources are: browser (and version), operating system, RAM capacity, ROM capacity, speed, any other web-related problems, method of accessing the web, on-line speed when connected to the internet, etc.?

Hi Tom -- Boy I wish! Instead -- we had someone else run the slides while she ran the meeting. Not ideal -- but there was just no way to resolve it for her. She says she followed all the instructions (browers, antivirus, firewall setting) -- but she was pretty distraught by the whole thing. Basically -- unable to use any secure browser settings. Thanks all -- Pete
