Moving to S. Orange this week and need to choose a TV provider - cable or satellite. I'd like to hear feedback from local area residents as to which provider is better. |

Depends... I love DirecTV. But if you want to watch TV while there is s snow storm (or even a bad rain storm, satellite is not the best option. Ideally, go with DirecTV and get a Netflix subscription. That way you can always be assured to have a supply of movies to watch on a bad weather day. The other consideration is, how do you get your Internet access. If you do DSL, then either is fine. But If you do cable access, it's cheaper if you also do cable TV service. |

We switched to DirecTV in May and our signal has been fine during every storm since except for about 5 minutes during one extremely heavy summer downpour. So far, snow has not affected our signal at all. (I realize we haven't had any particularly bad snowstorms yet this year, but I'm just sayin'.) In the interest of full disclosure, I must also say my wife and I are avid TiVo users, so we rarely watch "live" TV. However, because we're new to satellite TV, I deliberately check every time there's a storm to see how it's affecting our reception, and so far I've got absolutely no complaints. In the interest of even fuller disclosure, I must also say that I have hated Comcast Cable for a very long time, and I am very definitely biased against them. Their programming is perfectly fine, as far as I'm concerned, but their customer service is easily the worst of any utility company I have ever had to deal with. That , along with their constant price increases, drove me nuts for years while I lived in areas where I was unable to use DirecTV. And speaking of price, it all depends on the programming packages you want, of course, but FYI, with DirecTV we kept all the channels we had on cable, and added two premium channels, and we still pay less money per month than we did with Comcast.

Well, South Orange uses Cablevision as their provider. They stink, but I still have them. It really came down to price for me. I ended up getting the Cable + Internet + Phone package, all for about $90 per month which is better than I could do with any other option. I priced them all out for about 3 days.

A big question is what type of internet service you want/need. I have Cablevision for cable and internet, both are pretty decent. Do you have any high def tv requirements? I think Cablevision may offer more/higher def channels, not positive though. I used to have Verizon DSL, wasn't thrilled with them, cable internet has been much faster, and more reliable. |
