I know it's only February but parades do take some time to plan -- especially when your hard drive crashed during the year, taking all of your prior parade planning records with it. From time to time, I will be posting information regarding the parade on other sections of the Message Board, as appropriate but here is where all of the hard information will be for anyone who is interested. If you have any questions regarding the parade or how you or your organization can get involved in this years parade, please post your questions here and I will answer them.

Following is a listing of some organizations which have participated by marching in previous years. All of these organizations are invited to march on Memorial Day 2006. If you are a member of one or more of these organizations and can speak on behalf of that organization, please post your acceptance of the invitation to march here and either include contact information (contact person, phone number on parade day, and e-mail address) here or send me a PL with that information by clicking on the "Joan" to the left of this post and following instructions. If you are not able to speak on behalf of your organization but would like your organization to march this year, please post or PL to me contact information so I can contact the appropriate party. Reconstructed list of organizations which have participated previously follows: Township Committee Police Department, Fire Department, Department of Public Works Columbia High School Marching Band Girl Scouts Boy Scouts Y Explorers Bette White Dancers Jr. Docents from Durand Hedden JAC Girls' Soft Ball Team Boy's Lacrosse Team Hilton Neighborhood Association St. George’s Church CCR Village Alliance SA Partnership SOMBI Rotary Lions Kiwanis First Aid Squad Apologies to any previously participating organization which may have been omitted due to computer and human memory error.

Help Wanted: If marching is not your thing, or you don't belong to an organization which is participating in the parade this year but would love to be part of the biggest and best parade Maplewood has each year, now is your chance. I am looking for persons to help plan and administer the parade. Help is needed in the following categories: Publicity: Deisgning a flyer, news release, poster, etc. and/or helping to post and otherwise distribute same. Handing out flags to children marching in the parade on parade day. Doing crowd control at the assembly point on parade day. Checking in each group, lining up the marchers in order of march, starting each group along the parade route. Arranging for persons to drive vehicles in the parade thereby providing rides for veterans who would like to participate but can't march any more. Contacting veterans and/or organizations to let them know about this year's parade, finding out which veterans and/or organizations want to be in the parade and confirming their participation. If you are interested in helping, please post your interest here (or send me a PL), including what you would like to work on and if you are posting your information here, send me a PL with contact information for you if you are not absolutely certain that I already have it (crashed hard drive also took out my address book). Thanks in advance to anyone who volunteers. |

I've already received some suggestions and/or interest from groups which have not participated in the parade in recent years and more suggestions are welcome (whether or not you are a member of that organization or have any idea of how to contact them). Included organizations should be youth groups, community organizations (such as neighborhood associations, civic organizations, members of local religious congregations), service organizations and the like. Suggestions thus far received include: Library Teen Advisory Committee Community Band Civic Association Women’s Club Please post any other suggestions here. Contact information for these organizations would also be appreciated. Thanks.

The Maplewood Civic Association and the Citizen's Budget Advisory Committee are the first organizations to respond to this open invitation for organizations to march in the Memorial Day Parade. Both have been added to the order of march.

Isn't this something like putting up Christmas decorations before Halloween? I can assure you that the Girl Scouts will be there, but please don't ask us for any more information than that until much closer to the time. I just can't deal with it this far ahead ... |

SAC: Thanks for the assurance. I will be in touch with you regarding the specific details when we get much closer to the day of the parade. I am starting now because some organizations stop meeting in April or May and have their calendar of activities solidified and their newsletters pretty much finished for the season at about the time I would otherwise be sending out official invitations. Girl Scouts have been added to the order of march. If anyone else has an organization that would like to participate in the parade, whether or not you have participated previously, please let me know through PL or by posting information/questions here. Thanks Joan |

Thanks to the Vet (and frequent MOL poster) I spoke with over the weekend who has volunteered to serve in the honor guard for this year's Memorial Day Parade. Any other veteran of the armed forces forces who is interested in marching in the parade either as a member of the color guard (color guard members are still needed) or as part of a larger rank and file of veterans should please let me know. If you are a veteran and would like to be in the parade but are unable to walk the parade route, give me some advance notice and I will try and arrange transport for you in the parade. |

The Parade Permit application is in (to the Town Clerk) and suddenly it appears much more real. The parade will be held again this year. We just have to get the marchers signed up and lined up and the ceremony put together. If your group would like to march this year (whether or not you have marched in previous Memorial Day Parades, please let me know so I can include your group in the order of march. Advance planning is a must since last year we had so many participants that we couldn't squeeze everyone into the student parking lot. |

Troop 5 has been added to the order of march. Girl Scout troops wishing to participate in the Memorial Day Parade should contact Sally Chew, who will be providing me with a list of participants, as she has in prior years. Boy scout troops (including cub scout packs) should get in touch with me directly if your group would like to march this year. Thanks. |

A huge thank you to Gleasons for permitting us to use their parking lot on parade day for vehicles which will be participating in the Memorial Day Parade. If your organization will be using a vehicle in the parade this year, upon arrival on parade day please park in Gleason's Lot rather than in the Columbia High School Student Parking Lot. If your organization would like to include one or more of your vehicles in the Memorial Day Parade, please contact me so the parade committee will know to expect you and can plan the order of march accordingly. Thank you. |

Thank you so much to MOL poster who has offered to drive his jeep in this year's parade and who has room for a passenger. If you are a veteran and would like to participate in this year's parade but are unable to walk the distance of the parade route. Please contact me and I will try to arrange transportation for you. If you have a vehicle you would like to drive in the parade and you have room to take one or more veterans please contact me and I will try to match you with as many veterans as you accomodate. NEW THIS YEAR: As stated above, Gleason's has offered us the use of their parking lot this year for parade assembly. If you will be driving a vehicle in this year's parade, please park in Gleason's lot so we can use the full student parking lot for those groups that will be on foot. |

Joy: Thanks so much for offering but we really don't need a photographer for this event. The News Record usually takes a picture or two and Jamie generally watches the parade camera in hand and takes pictures of the parade as people march by. These pictures are then posted in the picture gallery on MOL. What we could use help with: Letting others know about the parade, especially friends and neighbors who may be new to Maplewood and not know about the parade. Letting your religious group, service organization, youth group, community association, etc. know that you can participate as a group in the parade and getting information to me including the name of the organization and the name and contact information for someone we can contact in the event the parade is canceled due to inclement weather. Spreading the word to veterans in town that they are encouraged to participate in the parade. Assuring them that rides can be arranged for those unable to walk the parade route as long as Bernie and I have sufficient notice. Volunteers who are willing to drive veterans in the parade (assuming any veterans who are unable to walk the parade route express interest in participating) Design of a poster size flier we could put up in local store fronts as we get closer to parade day, Bernie and I are both graphically challenged as those who have seen our prior attempts can affirm. Helping to line people up at the parade site on parade day, especially needed is someone who can keep vehicles from entering the Student Parking Lot while the children are assembling there. Thanks again for the offer! I will also respond to you by PL. Joan

This is to acknowledge that veterans Mr. and Mrs. Wallace will be marching in this year's Memorial Day Parade. If you are a veteran who would like to participate in this year's Memorial Day Parade (or know of a veteran who would like to participate), please let me know. If the veteran will be needing transportation in the parade, please give me as much advanced notice as possible so arrangement can be made for transportation. |
