Well I think I officially have some sort of water phobia. I still haven't been to the pool despite many promisses to myself. Today I ran (trotted) in my neighborhood for about 2 miles. And I'm going to stretch a bit tonight and sit/meditate for a few minutes and then off to bed. The fact that I went out trotting today is a testament to a change in me...adult onset athlete. hah.

Went for a swim today instead of the run/bike with the team. Was good to get back into the water and swimming is so fun because when you're done you feel clean and pure (and superior to others). :-) I'll likely bike and run a bit tomorrow.

Went to las's big bash last night. It was great to see some of the MOLers in person and great to see such an outpouring to our friend las.

It was wonderful to meet you last night. I have to find an activity to keep me off the butts and I've always loved to swim. I know I want to walk in the res, but swimming appeals to me more than running because it's lower impact. If you don't mind my asking, where do you go for swimming?

I don't mind at all. Sometimes I swim with the team at various local Y's (Summit and Wyckoff) and I belong to Bally's on Rt. 22 which also has a pool. It usually isn't too crowded so it's a decent local place for laps. I haven't had any luck finding any other access to pools locally (e.g. Seton Hall). I have been in the pool at Columbia HS as well, but don't recall the circumstances...they must have lap swim or something.

It was great to meet you too bets. Hope to see you around town again soon.

Talked to my friend Judy the other day (another triathle). She is planning on doing the Wyckoff Tri with me and Lashawn. That should be cool! She's also signed up for the New York Triathlon (which is an Olympic distance tri, not a sprint, like the two I"m doing). I am impressed! It is cool to have friends who do this stuff! If we lived closer we could train together...too bad!

Two days ago I went running around the track behind my house. I did some speed work (haha) and then some low intensity cardio base building. (Sounds impressive eh?). I kind of like running. That is very surprising to me as previously the only running I did was running away from chances to run!

Last night I went to swim practice with the team at the Summit YMCA. Nice facility! It would be awesome if MSO has such a thing. Must have cost many millions to build tho...anyway, I rushed over there and got to the pool a bit late, but I was swimming well. Very relaxed stroke. I was with the beginners, not because I can't swim, but because my cardio base sucks (sucked?). I can tell I've made some progress cardio-wise because I wasn't winded as I swam...but then I was swimming slowly...regardless it felt better than when I was first with the team a few weeks/months ago. I wasn't ready to go with the intermediate folks, but maybe next time. I kept running over the other people in the lanes with me if I swam with any power. I was swimming without kicking or kicking with my hands in fists to slow myself down. The coach said that I looked "one with the water" (hello? compliment! :-) ) but that I needed to work on going harder. I agree with that, but I didn't want to run over the others and I wanted to feel comfortable so I just chilled out with my stroke. I worked a little bit on the things that are hard for me (like breathing on both sides) and made some progress there. Saw Lashawn there but we were too busy swimming to chat much.

Oh yeah the night before I went to a bike clinic. It was held at a bike shop in Sterling...or somewhere. Anyway they showed us how to change a bike tire again (I have never had to change a bike tire in my life...I hope I don't have to, even though I can now.) and showed us how to clean our bikes (you should clean a bike regularly...who knew!?). I talked to the main coach, Chuck, and asked him about working out on my beta blocker. He said to work out at only a moderate level to improve my endurance. That was exactly the strategy I had developed myself. I am not going to win the race, but finishing is my win, so getting through the race is my goal (in the alotted time hopefully!). :-)

Overall feeling good. Things at home...baby, job, husband, dad, family are doing well. Dad is SO important to allowing me to get out there and work out (husband is too busy working all the time--C and C Christopher Construction 973-978-6651 if you need some work done). Dad wrote a book recently that is starting to take off... Life Lessons from My Father (it's on Amazon). He's 73 and it is GREAT that he has done such a great thing...keeps him young too!

Hugs to you all!

Hey Alissa,

Good for you for getting back in the water! I also love swimming for the same reasons, but also I feel that it is very serene. The pool that I swim at is never very crowded. Whenever I'm there I feel like I have time to be alone with my thoughts or not think at all. I love it! I need to work on the breathing on both sides thing though.

I was thinking of signing up for a tri swim clinic but had to opt against it. All of this training stuff can get expensive if you're not careful. I figure that I'll just have to train on my own this time around. I have been working out with my friend, the one who roped me into this thing in the first place. That has been extremely helpful.

I'm happy to report that I did make it on the bike ride to Northvale that I told you about. In all I rode 40 miles!!! I was thrilled! The next day I managed to swim a mile, which was a big accomplishment since it was my first day at the new job. Unfortunately, I fell off the horse after that. I was tired from working again and allowed myself to procrastinate my way into not working out when I planned. That's the worse! I'm hoping to get back on the horse this week.

Looking forward to seeing you on the 17th and telling you about the new job. Keep up the good work!

Judy

Life has been hectic the last week or so. I was definately feeling put upon trying to balance home/family with work (demanding) and personal goals. Taxes are due, hubby's business is growing (meaning he is not around as much as he or I would like), the baby is itchy, got a new project at work, dad's book is taking off (how to market it more), mom has needs (my mom), trying to work out, plus basic tiredness/exhaustion...all were taking a toll.

Did have a good conversation with friend Lashawn on Wednesday that perked me up a bit. Took baby to dermatologist and was reassured. Got a chunck of work done for the job. Got taxes sent out...even though we have to pay. Sort of wanted to go swim with the team yesterday but got waylaid, but did go out for a walk in the neighborhood instead of lying down. Started to encourage baby to sleep through the night and last night was better. I felt humanlike this morning. Will be participating in the SO Rotary 5 K tomorrow...maybe I'll bike there/back too.

More cheerful now!

Well I just (yesterday) completed my first race ever. It was a race...the Rotary 5k in SO. I was "racing" at about a 15.5 minute mile pace (people were walking faster than i "ran", but I felt SO GOOD doing it. I'm proud of myself for showing up and finishing. As I told the race volunteers along the way, "My victory is the finish line." It's really true too.

I thought the whole last mile that I was last and I was OK with that (I had thought up all sorts of stories I could tell here on MOL about being last), as that's what I figured would happen, but as I crossed the finish line I heard someone say behind me, "There are about 4 more people left." 4 people left! Ha! OK 300 people beat me, but I beat 4 other people. That is so awesome! Although I think one of them was a 12 year old with a twisted ankle, I'm still pleased. Ha!

It felt great putting myself out there. Doing it! And feeling ok afterward. I didn't stick around for the festivities afterward, but maybe one day I'll actually be part of the "fitness" community. I guess by showing up I got my membership card. The triathlon I admit still seems a bit nuts, but I have to look at it like an endurance event, not a speed event. I will finish it!

Alissa, did I see you jogging alongside Maplecrest Park yesterday morning? I saw someone with grey sweatpants and a black jacket who might have been you. She had a good, steady running form.

Hey all,

The triathlon is next weekend. I'm excited and looking forward to having some fun. My training fell off big time in the past 6 weeks due to work travel and needed rest, but I'm going to have fun at the race and hopefully finish. Thanks for all the support. It's been a great learning experience for me and I hope to incorporate tri into my future routines.

Is it the Wyckoff race? I'm doing it as a team of 3 - we're each doing a leg of the event.

Good for you, doctoralissa! Your attitude is very inspiring and I commend you for a relaxed perspective on taking on such a major challenge. When I ran my first marathon last year, it was all about getting through it and not focusing on the clock.

Two mantras that worked for me:

Complete, not compete.

and a slightly cheekier one:

Speed is sex, distance is love

Good luck!

I heard the run was hard - a couple of hills. Good luck.

I'll be swimming - I feel like a power ranger in the wet suit!

Duh! Sorry for not giving you all the punch line. I competed. I swam and biked, but didn't run...because I ran out of time (I'm sloooooooooow), but it felt great, was terrific to share it with my son and husband and had a GREAT time. I'll get 'em next time. At least I didn't get pulled out of the water or fall off the bike as I saw quite a few others do. Whew! Thanks for the love and support all!

You had the courage to take on the challenge in the first place, which is more than a lot of us can say. I'm glad to know that you had such a great time.

Congratulations!

Next year you will make it!!!!!!

Darling Daughter is running in the Marine Corp Marathon in October. Amongst friends and family the smart money is that she wouldn't finish and may need oxygen. I think she will, but I am in the minority. :-)
