It is by self-forgetting that one finds.
It is by forgiving that one is forgiven.

While 'supertramp' is not a band I normally associate myself with....I have to say that this album cover is one of my favorite pictures. It has the two great tastes that go so great together (you got your chocolate in my peanutbutter....)So - really it has nothing to do with supertramp, but some photographer who's name I don't know. I feel sorry for rock album photographers - the music overshadows the image. To me, it all comes together when the music looks like the picture. It does sometimes work that way for people that can see music.

This is my last day of work until 2006. I can't tell you how happy this makes me feel. While I will miss the free oatmeal, I will not miss spending my day here. And I hope, in a year from now - I am at a different job. What that job might be, I do not know. I would like to do something that does something for the greater good. I dunno. The service I perform now does little good - the best thing it does it keep a roof over my head and put food on the table (and just barely at that). I look back and think about the people who helped me along the way. Mostly teachers and a few strippers. I can't be a stripper - so I often think about teaching. Maybe art therapy. The depressing thing is I can't afford to go back to school. So there is little chance of a big change.

God. If you are listening or reading. Please help me get through this whole letting my baby cry himself to sleep thing. It goes against every instinct in my body. My wife tells me that the doctor says this is best for the baby. I suppose it is her world and I am just living in it. Also forgive me for using the word stripper.

Help me Obi Wan Kanobi, you're my only hope.

How Much Do You Need?
Different people require different amounts of rest. While the majority of adults should spend between eight to nine hours asleep, a small number of people function perfectly well on only three to four hours of rest.

The time a person spends asleep also changes with age:

Zero to 24 months: Thirteen to seventeen hours.
Two year olds: Nine to thirteen hours.
Ten year olds: Ten to eleven  hours.
Sixteen to 65 years: Six to nine hours.
Over 65 years: Six to eight hours.

I have really really really really really really really really really really really liked beng home all day and not going in to NYC to work.

Jan 3 is going to be a cold toilet seat dentist kind of morning. I am sure it will get better from there. In theory.

Sure. I have a job and that is nothing to complain about. I also understand that wanting NOT to work is not a realistic or worthy goal. But hey - I can still dream.

Things I've learned in 2005:

- trust yourself
- black outs can be fun
- I don't love oatmeal
- oatmeal and greet tea are good for me
- the new willy wonka movie blew, but the new Agustis Gloop song from that movie is better than Stairway to Heaven
- there are no health benifits to be gained by drinking martinis
- My kids are smarter than me
- we may be through with the past but the past ain't through with us

THINGS I NEED TO DO IN 2006

- win superbowl pool
- find job in NJ and close to home. I mean close
- drink more green tea and eat more oatmeal
- spend even more time with wee ones
- listen to the augustis gloop song even more
- start taking more pictures
- take less crap from phonies
- become a bettter spelller
- finish my masterpiece
- party like it is 1999
- stop writing 2003 on my checks

On Jan 1st of the year 2000 I did the polar bear plunge into the icy Atlantic. It was one of the more unique feelings I have ever experienced. Later I would find out that the "feelings" I had were signs of hyperthermia.

I am just throwing it out there. Anyone who wants to join me next year please let me know. Sure I know that it is a year away......but you'll see......a year flies by.

I'll do it.
I went sky diving once. I figure the polar bear plunge is a lot like that, but not as far off the ground.

I am with you on enjoying not working. We aren't "supposed" to say that, but eff 'em, you know what I'm saying?
Meanwhile, my company is one of, like, 3 or 4 open for business in NYC. It su-ucks.

Happy New Year, buzzsaw! May all your resolutions be easy

OK. So far we have three people for the polar bear club....not bad....we need more......power in numbers!

Why are the Giants getting killed now? At HOME!?! Uggh.

I am behind the times. I saw Million Dollar Baby last night. I love when Clint Eastwood is behind and in front of the camera. The movie is exelent - but MAN MAN MAN was it heavy. I was drained after watching it. There is nothing good about a sucker punch. Clint's movie "unforgiven" is one of my all time favorites. Characters in his movies really don't get too many shots at redemption. And if they do the sticker price is higher than the car.

Buzz... Eastwood is making the same movies over and over again. Sorry to but in BTW.

Unforgiven
Space Cowboys
Million Dollar Baby
In the Line of Fire

All films about an aging _____________ who has one last shot at redemption and goes for it.

Not that individually they are bad, but he needs to broaden his aesthetic horizon a bit. Cause he has great power as an actor and great vision as a director.

What clint's fans really want is another movie with his big chimp friend that punches people when he says "right turn clyde". I look at Clint like I look at Neil Young - it's all one song. (except for bridges of madison county)

I started off the year right. For the start of my first five day week at work I called in sick. Tally-HO.

Eastwood does stretch himself now and then--even recently. Redemption, though, is the common theme. A Perfect World (Eastwood as the aging cop and Costner as the redemee), Mystic River and you have to go way back to the stuff like Bird and Play Misty for Me.

What else is Eastwood going to play at this point if not the old ______ with one last shot at redemption? The man with no name's grandfather?

(Comparing Space Cowboys and Unforgiven? Color me aghast). Space Cowboys could have benefited from a Clyde cameo.

Starting in 1986 and up until about 1996-7 I kept a daily / semi-daily diary. I would say that period was quite the time. It was the end of high school, all of college and a few years I was single in the NYC/HOB area. And fun was had by all. These are the times that I reflect on when I am crowded on the path train and the person next to me who smells like an historic and unwashed pair of boxer shorts has their finger in their ear and or nose.

But the time has come. I need to get a big 10 gallon steel drum and put them all in there and pour some kind of flamable liquid on them and drop the match of the future on top of it. The past must be a memory not a memoir. I have two kids. I want to be a hypocrite. I don't want to have to answer questions like:

"you said you never cut school"
"why did you say you could taste the drum solo"
"why were you suspended in jr high"
"why were you suspended in high school"
"what happened in jackson hole"
"how did you get into a casino at 17"
"did mom know that you fell in love with every person you saw on the path train"
"who are susan and lisa"
"why did you steal a car"
"who is this guy trying throw you out a window"
"why are you grilling inside"
"what did you do with the double albums"
"what language is this written in"

So, as I go through my old note books and take out the old pictures, ticket stubs, parking tickets and memonapkins I am going to share some of the tid bits with you. Then I am going to ask Dave to take my blog down. My children must never know I was a teenager.

HA!, I already got rid of all my old evidence, now when I tell my kids I never did that, they can't find out otherwise, except for the fact that for some reason I always (almost) tell the truth of everything I did, that way they know I speak from experience....
Of course, if they don't ask, I certainly don't have to tell, and I don't have to elaborate much....

There are only a few Earthly pleasures better than the long weekend. I took some time to sift through all of my nutty notebooks. I've decided to bury them all at sea. No need to rebuild the my past. A wise man once said, "everyone thinks their life is interesting - the challenge is to make it interesting for other people". Anyway, it can all be summed up by the Welsh supergroup 'the alarm'. I would just need to change the names, street name and the lights to New York City as opposed to Mersey. That, and I don't think strangers feel sorry for me. Why should they.

Well I find myself in reverie
About what we might have had
and what might have been
We had something going once
That was such a long, long time ago
It was way back in '76
Our friendship formed of pure innocence
We first met in Mathew Street
Where we heard something that would set us free
A sign stands over a door, it says
"Four lads who shook the world"
In the depths of those heady nights
We would dream of those bright lights
Oh my friend, Oh my friend, Oh my friend

And my friend John, he went away
He made some mistakes
Spent time in Walton jail
And now when I see him we still talk
But there's no light shining in his eyes
And Susie, she was seventeen
And more beauty in this world
I swear you'll never see
I was gonna be king
And she was gonna be queen
But now all she does is hide behind the tears
If there was more sense in this world
And work wasn't so hard to find
You would not be going your way
I would not be going mine
Oh my friend, Oh my friend, Oh my friend

Somewhere tonight out on the street
Somewhere beneath this city's heat
In the eyes of strangers who pass me by
Life is cruel and so unkind
Oh, Oh the SPIRIT OF '76

And Pete has seen his dreams come true
But that don't make him no hero
He's just one of the lucky few
If a man can't change the world these days
I still believe a man can change his own destiny
But the price is high that has got to be paid
For everyone who survives there are many who fail
I've seen my friends caught out in that crossfire
All their dreams and hopes smashed on the funeral pyre

I will never give in until the day I die
Get myself some independence
Carve out a future with my two bare hands
Oh my friend, Oh my friend, Oh my friend

Somewhere tonight out on the street
Somewhere beneath this city's heat
In the eyes of strangers who pass me by
Life is cruel and so unkind
Oh, Oh the SPIRIT OF '76

Mersey lights shine in the distance
Same as they did for us then
Mersey lights shine bright in the distance
Where are you now my friend?

You see some nights when I can't sleep
I still think of you

And all the promises, all our dreams we shared
I know those lights still call to you
I can hear them now

- Spirit of '76
The Alarm

MMmmmmmmmmeeeehhhh. So. There it is. 12 years or so summed up by a great 80's band. Whatever happened to that show "reunions" on VH1? They got the Alarm back together. One guy was a photographer, the other was working for the D.A.'s office of L.A........FREEBIRD!!!!

Songs can be useful in summing things up. I do it all the time. It is the only math I am good at. Right now I would equate my Mon-Fri 9a-5p life in these terms:

once in a life time - that's life * (the incumbant/ocean man) = 5.15 by the who

But. Really when you boil it down to the very core it is all about:

"he not busy being born is busy dying"
- B. Dylan

So. Who would you trust?

This man says to let your children cry themselves to sleep so they can calm down on their own:

This man says that having your children sleep with you is a good way to grow strong family bonds:

This man says any man who does not spend time with their family can not be a man:

This man says to follow your nose, it always knows!

Q: How many people does it take to change a tungsten light bulb on Mars?

A: None, there are no tungsten light bulbs on Mars.

I don't know if you are in to podcasts - but I have been listening to a free podcast from They Might be Giants. Check out #2a. The song "why did you grow a beard" will not leave my head. It is a catchy tune with a lesson to grow on.

reports are saying that the "new car smell" is actually toxic chemicals. Is anything sacred? Pretty soon they will say that pizza really isn't a good breakfast.

If you need to bang your head against a wall, but find yourself with no walls around you - try calling the customer service hot line for any one of your bills. It is just like the real thing. And you wouldn't like me when I'm angry.

Tomorrow is February. Of 2006. Time really flies. But I am 33 and, when I was 32 I thought I was 33. Not sure what that means. It means something though.

If you find yourself at 535 W. 22nd street in NYC - stop in the Leslie Tonkonow Gallery tomorrow night about 6pm. My pal Tracey Baran is having an opening for her new photo show. She is one of my favorite photographers out there. I think there also might be free wine. I'll be there. Then I'll have to rush home - like I always do. There is always a train to catch or a door to walk in to. Strike that. Reverse it.

May God bless and keep you always,
May your wishes all come true,
May you always do for others
And let others do for you.
May you build a ladder to the stars
And climb on every rung,
May you stay forever young,

May you grow up to be righteous,
May you grow up to be true,
May you always know the truth
And see the lights surrounding you.
May you always be courageous,
Stand upright and be strong,
May you stay forever young,

May your hands always be busy,
May your feet always be swift,
May you have a strong foundation
When the winds of changes shift.
May your heart always be joyful,
May your song always be sung,
May you stay forever young,

- B. Dylan
