Read Operating Instructions: A Journal of My Son's First Year by Ann Lamott. While she is obviously not a father, she is hilarious and captures well that special cluelessness all new parents feel. |

OK, I know it has been awhile since I posted, but iwe were in a long waiting period. They said about six months, which would have been Dec. They told us not to get our hopes up because very few people match in Dec because people don't want to deal with this during the Holidays. We got an early Christmas present when we received a phone call on Friday saying that someone would like to carry our baby. She went for her last medical exam on Friday and if everything goes well we will be given her info and will need to fly out to LA as soon as possible. |

We went to the Growing Generations Holiday party last night. It was incredible being in a room filled with gay men and all their children. Who would have thought that this would be possible. It was a great experience meeting so many people in various stages of the process. I can't wait to be a Dad. |

We will be spending a lot of time flying back and forth to CA. The baby has to be born in CA., so that Rob and I will both be listed as parents. This way there is no need for second parent adoption. |

OK, We hit the first snag in the process. Our egg donor has a DNA defect which makes her ineligible as a donor. This hit us hard because she was perfect. We saw a little of each of us in her personality. Besides our disappointment, we feel bad for her because the defect may affect her children. |

Okay---I know it has been awhile since I posted, but after we found the egg donor, everybody needed to go for bloodtests for a slew of infectious diseases. I never knew there were so many. Anyway, everybody is on their medication now. The egg donor and surrogates have both started giving themselves the Lupron shots. It looks like we may be flying out to CA at the end of March to do the embryo transfer if everyone responds well to their meds. |

It's amazing how much technology goes into this. Is it concerns about legal liability that add all of these tests and preventative medications, etc. to the process? (Obviously, people who conceive and bear children "the old fashioned way" don't go through them unless there are particular risk situations in their families' genetics or something.) I'm just curious ... it almost seems like overkill and quite an obstacle for people who want children and can't use the "old fashioned way" for whatever reason. At any rate, good luck and may all of the preliminaries be successful and completed quickly for you! |

I know! Adoption is also laborious and expensive, largely because of accountability, and parenthood by conception has none of that. And the scrutiny is aimed at those who want parenthood the most!

The tests and meds serve two different purposes---the tests are to make sure that everybody is healthy so that the surrogate will not catch anything during the process and also guarantee the best chances for the baby to be conceived---the meds are to make everybody extra fertile |

Found out last night that the egg donor has finals the week of the transfer and so now we have to push back two weeks. We are now looking at the first week of April to do the transfer. This process is pushing me to my limits. Must remember that all will be joyous when it is over |

Look at the bright side: your egg has studious, responsible genes! Also remember that every night of extra sleep you get now will be precious to you later. Hang in there. |

I would just like to thank Las for introducing me to so many nice MOL'ers. It was a pleasure meeting you all. Here is the latest update---We retrieved a total of 32 eggs from the surrogate. Not sure yet how many are viable---we should know that today. I'll keep everybody posted. Can you believe this snow?!? |

Just got off the phone with Rob. The embryologist called and said that out of the 32 eggs we have 27 mature eggs, which is an amazing number. He said it is the most he has ever seen. Yeah for us! Well actually Yeah! for our egg donor. Now out of the 27 eggs, we fertilized 14 with my sperm and 13 with Rob's sperm. Out of my 14, 11 became viable and out of Rob's 13, 12 became viable. Once again, incredibly good numbers. We took out 4 and 4 and froze the rest. Based on how the eggs divide by Friday, will depend on how many we implant. I will give you guys an update when we get back. |
