Keep posting, Betsy - we'll keep talking you down. This reminds me: years ago when we lived on the Upper West Side there was a building on Columbus and 73/74. Periodically a man would climb to the roof and threaten to jump. The crowd always formed, he always got talked down. One time, he perched himself on the roof above a tree - a scrawny yet rare street tree. The fire department couldn't set up the safety net without removing the tree, so they cut it down! The crowd boo'd and hissed and pretty much dispersed after that. We left as well, too upset to see the death of a beatiful tree to care about this man. No relevance to you. I just wrote it because I reminded mysef of it. Hang in there, kitten. We are all so proud of you! |

Hopefully many thousands more with a more ample oxygen supply which, as you probably now realize, is making you feel and look healthier and prettier (not that you looked unhealthy or unpretty - but you know what I mean....hopefully). |

Also, keep in mind that smoking causes wrinkles. It's true. When you've quit for a little bit, call me. I'll hook you up with some deeply discounted RoC products that work on those lines. |

I'm just taking it one day at a time. Day 2 is nearing an end as I get my arse to bed! I appreciate the support (and the offer of the RoC products, whatever they are)! Look for another Grateful Dead gathering around the anniversary of the 1st in June. |

For the second day in a row, I forgot I ran out of oil. I really think I'd be better off just having a few ciggies a day. |

A special birthday sentiment, composed by my nephew when he was 4: Singing' Happy Birthday, Singin' Happy Birthday. Ay yi yiiiiii We have no idea where he got it from, but it only gets "sung" to special people. You have reached that magic, wonderful number when women become wise and calm and focused. It's the best drug in the world. Let us know when the high kicks in.

Betsy, your family sure knows how to throw a party! Not only could I feel the love they have for you the moment I walked through the door, but the gifts - they chose were so, so thoughtful. I have never seen a collection of presents so appropriate for the receipient. Wow. Sorry I had to leave before the living art demonstration entitled Lamp Shade and Naked Man got underway, but I was able to snap a couple of photos of tipsy partygoers with the shade! Hugs to you. And a great, great year, my friend.

Well, in a manner of speaking. You'll notice that you're breathing easier. You'll notice that you don't stink and neither do your clothes. You'll notice that food tastes better. And, if you're like me, you'll still want a cigarette, but you know that "just one" won't be just one and after all the effort, going back isn't an option. Hang in there! |

My heart a tiny seed unfolding in the rays of love, afraid to grow, hugging the dark earth, but finally turning outward to the sun with a burst of bloom. When you are through, my sun no more, when it must die, tear it quickly from the turf and leave the tendril curling into death, or pour sharp acid of words on it that will destroy with quick blinding pain; leaving a dead heart. I was given a copy of my Mom's journal about a year ago, in a very exasperating condition (8x11 pages containing pages 1-3, 2-4, 5-7, etc and one of my favorite students (PB) cut the pages in half and re-copied the journal with pages in logical order. I made copies for all of my siblings (+ extras 'cause I know!) and have one myself. But I never read it. Couldn't. Too. Much. Sadness. I started tonight and those are the opening paragraphs of the diary, dated Dec. 1948. And I already know from a sibling this unfolding love was not for my Dad. But she meets my Dad and journals it. And I'm terrified to read it. Us, our last Christmas (12/95):
Mom, I love you! I quit smoking, and your grandson Cody turned 18 today. It was a beautiful day, which of course reminded me of you. |

Thank you very, very much for sharing this Bets. It's been an honor reading your blog and getting to know you. Congratulations too. (Analytically speaking (or however), do you think being able to start to read your Mom's journal and your quitting smoking are related?) I remember feeling both more vulnerable but stronger when I quit. |

Betsy, would it surprise you to learn I also have my mom's journal? It is my treaure. Enjoy this insight into her life. Cherish her words and use them as you need. Her words you'll have always - they can never leave you. And I agree with G'tree: you look the same as you did ten years ago...byotch! |
