Having been blogging this lately, though there has been activity. If you can believe it, I'm currently juggling five or six opportunities. I had a few good phone interviews last week. I have an in-person interview in Manhattan coming up on Thursday.

I'm going to tell my prospective employers that I have other interviews going on so that they see me as valuable, but I think I won't tell them where these opportunities are.

I saw the Seton Hall job posted again, through a different recruiter this time. This time, they listed the salary range, and the top of the range is below what I could have accepted. So there's more reason to be content that I didn't get that job.

I had an interview yesterday and one today. Yesterday's went swimmingly well. They are going to make me an offer. I heard that and then went off to my Manhattan interview. The company makes software for the financial industry.

The company is in the Woolworth Building. Very impressive. I always wanted to see it. Maybe I did as a kid. You can't go in there to look any more, so I felt lucky just to have occasion to be in the lobby.

The receptionist greeted me and gave me an application and an exam to fill out. I think I did well on the exam. I couldn't answer every question. I don't like the format, even though I do well on them. It tests minutiae that I can look up in manuals when I need it. Why do I have to have it ready in my brain?

I brought my materials back to the receptionist. She waited until then to tell me that the guy who was to interview me was not available today. WTF! I was dumbfounded, so I went to the men's room and then went back. What happened? What happened with what? Did he have to do something? Yeah, he got stuck in a meeting.

So he didn't warn me. I have a cell phone, after all. He didn't apologize. He didn't offer to reschedule. He didn't send anyone in his stead. He didn't tell the receptionist to apologize (and she didn't have the sense to). He hasn't called me yet.

I have been to a lot of job interviews, and I have never been given this shabby treatment.

VERY bad business ethics when you are hoping to recruit someone! Well, at least you got to see the inside of the Woolworth Building.

Tom; hurray for a potential offer! Hope it is a good one at a great company.

The one at Woolworth Building was also a successful interview--you found out very early on what a jerk this guy is and that you wouldn't work there no matter what the offer.

Best wishes and hope you get multiple offers.

I'm with Eats on this one. It's great that you found out early. I had an interview once with a woman who was a total orifice & her boss who was an even larger orifice. Against my better judgement, I accepted the offer. I wanted to get my foot in the door in that industry so badly that I didn't listen to my little voice. After 3 weeks, I wanted to leave.

Everything happens for a reason. Your job is out there.

I got a formal offer from the first company. Before accepting it, I asked for another "interview." I met with my future boss and another of my cow-orkers. Interestingly, he recently left the university job I interviewed for. He's the second person who said I'm lucky I didn't end up there. And before that, he worked at Hunter College, the college I went to when I studied computer science.

I saw the facilities and had some nice conversations. Then I formally accepted the offer.

I start on Monday. I'll be working at Vonage in Holmdel. It's a long commute, at least 34 miles each way, but it's against traffic and took me only 45 minutes. Maybe I'll get a motorcycle to save gas. It's pretty far to ride my bike there.

OK, you got me. I tried to get stuff done and asked a lot of questions. Someone told me to relax, because no one will breathe down my neck and ask me why I haven't become productive yet. So that is a good start, isn't it?

The commute was OK. It was quick enough, but the drivers were, well, typically Jerzoid. Lots of people will drive in any lane and block traffic. Several tailgated. I held my hand out the window to signal to a woman to cut it out. I was trapped on all sides. And someone drove in my blind spot for a while. But it's all par for the course.

One of my new cow-orkers told me that some life insurance policies don't pay out if you die on a motorcycle. Hmm, maybe I better rethink that motorcycle idea.

Hey Tom - Just discovered on another thread that you started your first day of a new job yesterday. Congrats!

I have no doubt you played nicely with the other children (that's just your way)

Vonage seems to be a good company. We have actually been thinking about switching...

sorry the commute is stinky. I wonder if you could carpool with any other local Vnage employees?
I don't suppose NJ Transit has a train station in Holmdel.

GOOD LUCK!

There is a train station nearby in Hazlet. But hmm, I'd have to catch a train either in Newark Penn Station or Secaucus. And then I'd have to find a way from Hazlet to work. Not worthwhile overall.

The commute really doesn't seem so bad. It's amazing how quick it is, considering the distance. I made sure not to exceed 70 mph today, and it still took me only 45 minutes.

Forty five minutes is about right driving to Hazlet. We have a supplier I visit there from time to time. I think you can also catch the train at MetroPark, although I haven't tried that. Unless your new office is an easy walk from the station you probably are going to have a problem getting a cab.

BTW, glad you landed pretty quickly. We are happy for you!!

Tom --

I'm glad the job situation worked out. I have to say though, it's come at an inconvenient time for me. If you weren't at work, I could recruit you to help me research car prices and dealers. Looks like my Subaru is on its last legs, sooner than I wanted it to be.

Have fun at work!
