Hey Mem, get rid of the gross food for goodness sake. Let's drop some poundage together. I will supply the food that will drop weight and keep us satisfied. Speaking of being satisfied, let's go out dancing with wonderful Latin men. I know of many places that teach dance and have social dancing. So way much more fun than yoga or running. Bets, MeAndTheBoys are extremely invited. I am commited to losing 20 pds. |

I need to lose at least 40. Fifty would be ideal. I have lost a coupla pounds since single-life took over (but gained a few inches in height since I cut my hair, right mem?) but I would love to have help and encouragement. Lets get las, greenie, alg, pippi, vig, (I could go on and on and on but let's say each and every one of you) involved. I think I want to start a lap swimming group this summer. Anyone interested? And thank you, tiki-JML, for being you. I think we might have been sisters in a past life (and I feel that about several MOL friends over these years). Hopefully, I'm not being TOO sappy. I'm going to bed now. The rhythmic sound of the rain is lulling me to sleep. Good night, SO-MOL. |

I am starting a diet on Monday. I need to. I have to shed about 30lbs, a good chunk of that by about June 20th when Hubby has an event on the World Yacht and I need to be "dressed up"... Yup, I know, it's not going to happen by June 20th, but I need to start somewhere!

Mem, you should have put this thread on the incredible shrinking people post since that once-disappearing site is now always on view (below soapbox) Anyhow, there are some good tips there. I truly don't think anyone needs to buy prepacked food, but whatever floats your boat.... As I recounted on the "incredible" site, I have lost some 50 pounds over the past 13 months - no quick loss tips from me. I view your efforts to drop 10 pounds to what I see as an anorexic level of 118, and I am in awe. Actually, I no longer tell people who know me how much I've lost when they ask. I can see them calculating just how fat I was before! I just mumble, yes, I've lost weight! Most pressing question today is: Does anyone know how not to gain weight on a cruise? The next two weeks will see whether I return 15 pounds fatter - or, hopefully, at the same weight as today. Obviously that would be considered as a success by me, as I don't believe it possible to lose weight on vacation. OK, I know about walking, etc. aboard ship. There will be a lot of off ship excursions which should provide exercise. It's those three meals a day that worry me. Should I go vegetarian in the hopes that will help? I know that buffets present mega temptations. What I did to drop the flab up to now was to increase fibre, go whole grain wherever possible, reduce size of portions and NO second helpings. Also desserts were of the low cal variety only What scares me is the prospect of reading all those menu offerings every day — while not having to worry about shopping for and preparing all those healthy meals myself. Any dietary tips? |

Cruise (it's been a few years, but here goes): 1. Don't go to the midnight buffet. It's really just a marketing gimic after all, isn't it? Besides, buffets are how they get rid of left overs. 2. Walk. Walk, walk, walk. All over the ship. 3. Remind yourself that it may sound good and it may look devine. It may even taste heavenly. But, unless it's some exotic food that you can't get/make at home, is it really worth it? Will your life be meaningless if you have grilled chicken instead of steak au povre? It's just food. If you decide to splurge, do it on something worth it. Otherwise, you can always treat yourself to the same dish in a couple weeks, after you get home and plan for the calories. |

Nutrisystem is sending UPS to pick up their food tomorrow. That was easy. Today I weigh 124. Breakfast: One cup of pomegranate kefir with a handful of blueberries Lunch: Mixed greens, fat free dressing and tiny scoop of tuna fish with four saltine crackers Dinner: I think Lean cuisine or a chicken breast with some veggies. I am very cranky, but it's not the diet. I absolutely loathe my job right now. I don't even feel like eating. I am waiting to see if Laura will let me in her Tiki Hut tonight. I need that. |

MTierney, I can tell you going vegetarian will not help you NOT gain weight on a cruise! A few years ago we cruised Royal Caribbean, a weekend cruise from Miami. We had 2 young kids at the time so we never went to the midnight buffets, and I still gained 5 lbs! FWIW, I am very small boned (according to you below anorexic weight, though I am not) and I ate healthily, but did eat a little dessert, probably at each meal. OUr last cruise was a Carnival Cruise and the food didn't thrill me as much, I don't know if I gained weight but we walked a lot. This summer we cruise RC again. If the food is good, I will certainly try everything, but I found the portions are pretty small. (Thank goodness.) I don't know about you, but we don't regularly have 4 course meals here! As you know, to not gain weight you have to burn more calories than you take in, so if you're on a big boat, take the steps, don't take the elevator, and do lots of walking. The thing I hate MOST about cruises is the lines for the elevators! With young ones, sometimnes we had to take the elevators but if your feet can take you there take the steps! Then eat your lobster bisque & chocolate souffle guilt-free!

MT, Avoid cruises if you are trying to lose weight. I cruised Alaska twice, the food was so good I couldn't stop eating it. And it was everywhere, because good cruise food is cheap word of mouth advertising. However, a bad cruise can be worse. I cruised to Bermuda on the original "Love Boat" (it was a ridiculously cheap getaway). It was so horrifyingly outdated and scary, and the food was very awful, but it was so fattening I gained weight even though I barely ate it. So, the only solution I can offer is to do the excursions and stay away from those buffets. Also, stay on deck as much as possible so you don't smell the food. A lounge chair with a bottle of low cal vodka or grab an outdoor hot tub - just don't pass out in it. I hope you have a great vacation.

Laura, Shameless plug indeed - your food is absolutely the best I ever had. VIG - Small bones is a curse - you CANNOT hide the weight anywhere! Everyone here thinks I am so brave posting my weight - hello - I am 5' 2" with bird bones and when I gain weight there is nowhere to hide it and when people say, "oh - you look "puffy" - allergies?" No - it's doritos and sour cream, thanks! It's such high maintenance. Laura, Any cleomes left please?

Menopause is a drag in this regard. I almost immediately became tubular in middle, as if chronically 3 mos pregnant. Previously, I'd been a person who always had a small waist, proportionately. No more. Very tough to fight the uphill battle against nature/hormones. Same level of exercise and/or dieting doesn't yield same result. YECH. I'm 5'9, and I am NOT going to say what I weight. |

My 2 cents mem, since you've sent the food back: Weight Watchers all the way. I had great success (lost 15 pounds after #2--then came #3) and learned a whole lot about how to eat sensibly--and eat regular every day food--when I had the time to go to meetings. And believe me when I say, I am not a "joiner," not a "cheerleader" type. But the meetings are great. If you're looking for "help and encouragement," as bets is, this is the place to go. And they will teach you all kinds of coping strategies for situations like your company awards dinner, cruises, holiday meals, etc. There are even guidelines (and point values) for liquor. I only know about the meetings and the "leader" in Maplewood, so I can't vouch for others, but it seems the program is the most sensible around. And it stays with you for life once it's become habit. I bet there's a meeting near where everyone works, if you just look it up. Some things I learned: Definately exercise, and while the yoga and pilates are great for stretching, toning and strengthening, you really must add some cardio of at least a medium intensity. 30 minutes at least 3 days a week? More would be better. Look for low fat, high fiber foods. The more fiber the lower the points (as per WW points system). Fruits, vegetables and water! The more you are able to consume the better. And just about all vegetables are "free" in points value. Really, on Weight Watchers there's no need to starve yourself. In fact I sometimes found the meals I was having were more than I would normally eat. Soups are really great. They must be broth or water based though. And the more veggies and legumes they have the better off you'll be. It's better to eat 4 sensible "meals" a day. I generally try to have 2 lunches. Something around 11:00 like fruit and low-fat cottage cheese, and then something like turkey on whole-wheat (no mayo, but I do enjoy it with nice ripe avocado) with a side of veggies of some sort at around 2 or 3. Then light on dinner. Now, if I could only "walk the walk" and stay the hell away from the chocolate, maybe I'd get a start on getting rid of the 30 or so pounds I have to lose! |

Slimfast is pure dreck. Look at the ingredients. It differs from a CHOCOLATE BAR only in that it has a little cellulose in it. Oh, and a few other scary chemicals. The idea is that you eat Slimfast and nothing else. Well, yeah, if you can stick to that, you might lose weight, but who will? I used to be one of those "eat whatever you like and not ever gain a pound" people. I'm slowly gaining weight but don't have good habits. My weight doesn't show, so no one can believe what I weigh when I tell them. Consider hiring a private chef, for just a few meals a week. You'll eat really well. Sara Markel, here in Maplewood, just finished culinary school and sends a weekly email with the stuff she's cooking. She would probably be willing to do other stuff for you. You can contact her at soup@forkintheroadnj.com. I have no personal interest in her business and I'm not even a customer yet, but I expect I will be one day. I saw my ex-wife's cousin recently and she thanked me for the diet I gave her several years ago. She lost 25 pounds. I had no idea what she was talking about. Apparently, I made something up, and she took it seriously, and it worked. I said eat a sensible portion of sensible food, and after each meal, it a tiny square of Lindt chocolate. I think dark chocolate gives more pleasure per calorie than anything. It has to be very high quality, because it will leave you content enough not to have too much of it. If you're going to count calories, be sure to count your drinks' calories. Alcohol has a zillion calories in every sip.

I would love to find exercise/walking/swimming buddies. I think I eat pretty sensibly, although I always convince myself mentally of that when I order (big batch of steak nachos supreme from Big Sky Burrito in Madison, baby! luckily the stains came out of my shirt) lunch every day. I think swimming is my cardiac best but I have a problem with how I look in a bathing suit. I'm so glad I got that out! Sorry, Tom, that it had to be your 'blog. I went on one of those Caribbean cruises. I did not gain any weight. I never went to the midnight buffet and just because the food was out did not mean I headed for a dining room. I also made use of the gym almost every day that I was on the ship. There is also just lots of stuff to do that does not involve eating. So have a good time. cecilia |

I hate to say it, but perhaps Tiki-activity is the problem. Mojitos et. al. are quite caloric. Try alternating each drink with water if you don't want to cut alcohol out completely. Or walking to/from the Tiki bar. That would be about 3 miles R/T, no? And the weaving as you stumble home would probably burn more calories. I've found that by replacing half of my daily chocolate consumption with fruit, I've dropped a few more pounds. |

I just want to know who would name something spotted dick..... mem--for your weight loss what kind of excersing (sp? I can never get that right) are you doing? If you can do fourty-five minutes of cardio five times a week that will help. Also lift weights. The more muscle you have the quicker you burn fat. (although your weight goes up since muscle is heavier than fat) |

Back from our cruise - and two pounds lighter! It had to be the two miles a day on deck and all the other walking done on land. I tried to avoid the obvious - dessert after breakfast, etc., but really enjoyed the meals. Selecting food to eat without having to shop, cook, etc. for 15 days is great. Now, back on land, we'll see. It's so hot, walking doesn't appeal to me. Soon swimming will be an option, of course. |
