Another morning dawns, bright and sunny, and still no work has begun.

My house isn't flooded and I'm not losing a loved one to a horrible illness, so in the whole scheme of things my problems are nothing. Nontheless, I'm feeling particularly despondant this morning because the swelling and discharge on my face has gotten worse, and this job that I wanted to start at the beginning of June, so it would be near completion by the time the kids go back to school in two months, is not happening AGAIN today.

Was up at 4:30 because child #2, who had came in to our bed in the middle of the night, was pretty much kicking me out of the bed. My face, around my eye, felt funny so I went to look in the mirror and, sure enough, it was all swollen again. Took my pillow and went to the guest room to see if I could get another couple hours sleep. I had been sleeping with my head flat down on the bed because #2 had taken the pillow too, so I thought I'd see how my eye looked after I elevated it for a bit. Ultimately, I couldn't sleep because I was so worried about my face, though the swelling did go down a bit. Went to watch T.V. until a reasonable hour to call the doctor's emergency number. Ultimately, the doctor is not worried, and is prescribing a topical cream he thinks might help.

Got a message from the architect, while I was in the shower, that the contractor will be here tomorrow and half day Monday to do prep work (which was supposed to start Monday, and then was delayed until today). Heavy machinery won't be brought in to dig until Wednesday. Guess I'll be coming back a couple of days next week to tie up lose ends I had wanted to tie up once work had begun.

Oh yeah, I also f*&ked up the TV. I watered a pretty floral arrangement that was sent to me by one of my husband's clients. It was sitting on top of the TV and, unbeknownst to me, water leaked out and ran down the back of the T.V.. Maybe one or two drops managed to get inside, and now the picture's all messed up. And I don't want to tell my husband because he's worried enough about money as it is, what with the expense of the addition.

I think I need to watch a sad movie or something, and have myself a good cry.

MATB -
sounds like you need a hug from all the boys. I know it's no consolation right now, but it will all be over soon (skin infection, too) Really. I know it doesn't seem that way, but it will. You'll get through it.

Nothing better to cure what ails you than good old time.

Meand...Wish I were home...not only do I have great shoulders to cry on, I would make you something to make you feel better...prayers out to you, your skin, your project and your TV...and if you are really down and out...go look at the 3 boys...
Ciao,
B

Me sorry to hear about all your trials of Job now. We get weepy after the first punch then hopefully we get up for the next round to fight. A hug and friends that watch your back and the looks of pure love from your boys is the medicine that will get you through this. A virtual hug from me to you and a prayer for strength will see you through this.

BEFORE:

AFTER (sort of):

Of course, no work is being done today because of the pouring rain this morning. According to my husband, they were here and were hoping to wait out the rain, but it just went on too long.

So, progress is being made--ever so damned slowly!

And so it begins. Don't think I was fully prepared for what "digging up the yard" actually meant. Might have been better if I weren't here to witness it. After all the work we've done over the years.

It'll be O.K.--I know. But still. It's all good. They've actually started, something that didn't seem like it would ever actually happen!

"TheBoys" are a lovin' it! Me--not so much!

Me, I hope it helps to know you have created a lifelong memory for your boys. This is all they will remember of the Summer That Destroyed Mom, and they'll smile about it for decades. (the tractor, not your collapse)

Well, it won't be the "Summer" that Destroyed Mom, but it could very well turn out to be the "Fall" that Destroyed Mom. From the looks of things, "things" being the complete and utter lack of progress being made--the big hole was dug last week, and it's still sitting there, with some rebar and gravel in the bottom, no concerete poured, no cinderblock foundation, NOTHING--it will be complete and utter chaos just in time for me to move back in and get the kids off to school!

Woo Hoo! So much for careful planning!

Me, these seemingly endless delays are part of the stress and misery of the work being done.

Please, try not to look at the calendar. Just focus on what you have to do today with the boys, and take a lezzesfair [I've bumbled the spelling of that word - it's supposed to be the French term for when the people govern themselves] attitude towards the construction and let it work itself out.

Keep your eyes on the prize - there is nothing but the end result.

Hope you are at least able to sleep.

I'm fine. It's all good because I'm not home. Of course, September and the months that will follow will be a very different story, I'm afraid!

Love your photo. Very cute!

These things always take longer than planned. While you are in it, it will drive you to the brink of homicide. Try to take some small measure of comfort in knowing that once done, it will quickly become a distant memory. It's only been two years, but we can't imagine how we lived with our old kitchen for so long and don't consciously remember the pain of the process.

Kind of like childbirth, I guess.

Yup, I was going to say exactly the same thing. Kind of like childbirth. However the actual "birth" part only lasts a couple of days or so.

So, actually, it's probably more like pregnancy, and will probably last as long.

It's just very frustrating, because I really, really, really tried to plan for this!

meandtheboys - the best paid plans, eh?

I totally relate to your frustration. I cannot believe how many times our basement tear out ( not a big job!) has been delayed over the last week and half!
In our case, I think it's because there are too many players who all have different schedules to coordinate. I know I will need patience in major doses to deal with the re-build, which I wanted to finish by the end of October (since mrbtabr is due end of December) but at this point, I am guessing THAT ain't happenin'

I just keep telling myself "breathe...."

Yes, Pippi, breathing practice will definately serve you well in the coming months!

As for me, I'm doing my best to relax now, while I can, and also doing my best to mentally prepare myself for the hell to come when I come back in September. I also need to remind myself how very lucky I am to be able to get away: from the construction, from the oppressive heat, from the hectic day-to-day of the school year and all the things we seem to have to do when we're home!

OMG, it's HUGE!

When we left for the beach last Friday all we had was a foundation (which took almost a month to get built)! Came back yesterday and we suddenly have four walls and a roof! And it looks utterly humongous! Again, that mix of scary and exciting. I suppose it will look a lot less imposing once it's sided and painted and has a roof on it?

Hi guys. No pictures cuz I can't get them on the laptop (hubby took them while I was away), but they broke down the walls between the addition and the house last Thursday. Of course, there was absolutely NO work done Monday, Tuesday or Wednesday, so I guess that was the consolation prize.

All I know is that there better not be any days of NO WORK when I'm home or I'll be losing it pretty quickly!

I won't look so big when it's done and you start putting all your stuff back....

Just remember to breathe deeply and remember that this, too, shall pass.

I know Pippi, thanks for asking, but we're having the week from hell. Remind me not to come home the day before school ever again!

There are a bunch of photos on my memory card that I just haven't had time to upload yet. Another problem is that the computer has been moved up to my bedroom on the third floor, out of harms way, so it's very hard for me to get to it during the day. I'd often be on it while the kids watched a little TV in the next room.

I can say there's no one here today, and I find that to be particularly frustrating--considering the amount of work that needs to be done. The plumber was here Tuesday and Wednesday, and he's been the only one I've seen since I've been home.

According to the latest update from the contractor, quite a lot is scheduled to happen in the next week or so. I sure hope that's the case.

Will post some photos as soon as I have a minute but, considering I haven't even unpacked my clothes yet, who knows when that will be!

How's your "project" coming!

I can't believe you came home the day before!
That's a lot like VIG moving right before a cruise

I look forward to seeing the pictures when you post them.

Our project is coming along well. I could easily say the same thing you did, when describing the addition above:

"And it looks utterly humongous! Again, that mix of scary and exciting. I suppose it will look a lot less imposing once it's sided and painted and has a roof on it?"
