This weekend I saw something amazing. A good buddy of mine made a leather jacket out of leather from a couch. This was not any old couch, this was the couch he grew up with. When it was time for it to go, I guess he didn't want to let it go.

"see this, this is where the couch rubbed against the wall"
"see this, this is where my cat used to scratch"

Thought that was cool. Never saw anything like it.

He works here:

www.vansonleathers.com

I had a pair of pants that I wore for years and couldn't let go. I made a picture frame out of it. Nowhere as cool as a jacket.

Remember that song 'ironic' a while back, that listed things that really weren't ironic - but just big bummers? I don't either. I remember the press more than the song. Anyway. This week's weather is amazing. Until Friday. When it will rain. Until monday. Meh.....

If you take the train to work, I bet you have seen the ad for some accounting firm that Joe Torrey endorses. The copy is something like, "Accounting is like baseball, you need a winning strategy". I am not good at math but I know the value and predictability of a formula. The whole ride in to the city, I was coming up with more Joe Torrey ad copy:

Banking is like baseball, you need a lot of money to buy new players.

Cell service is like baseball, if you miss the call you could strike out.

Condoms are like baseball, you need a good third base coach

dish soap is like baseball, you need to keep your home plate clean

pizza is like baseball, to stay on top you need to make a nice pie.
OK. That sucked. I'll stop.

I saw this guy I knew from living in Hoboken today at the train station. He said he hated me - and he said it like he meant it. I told him I was living in the suburbs w/ my wife and children. The conversation turned cold and he said very matter of fact, "Man. I hate you. That's what I want to do". It freaked me out a but. I think it was that he thought for sure he was better than me and that I had what he thought he deserved. Go figure. He worked in a music instrument store. Those guys are bitter that they are not famous. HA...I hate you. Dude. The grass is always greener.

When I moved here, all I wanted was to be back in Hoboken. Now. Of course I love it here and thank God that I was able to get here before the big boom. There was a time I felt that there was a divine intervention when I met the owner of the house that I now live in. He said something like, "I have a better offer, but it is important that this place go to good people - and I like you kids...." But. Still. I miss Vito's subs. and louise and jerry's.

Real Estate is like baseball, there would be no score with out home base.

Grandma always said things happen for a reason.

"Cell service is like baseball, if you miss the call you could strike out."

You could sell that one. But my favorite was:

"Condoms are like baseball, you need a good third base coach"

But I don't think you could sell that one.

You should have punched him when he said he hated you. Unless he is a drummer, those guys have big arms, and he would have ended you.

I recently tried to explain the concept of death to my older son. My wife's father has been gone for many years and recently the little man was wondering where Mom's Dad was. He was also doing too much shooting, using the word "kill" and all that jazz - so we thought we'd try to explain what killing does and what happens when you die. Not in a way that would make him feel bad or scare him - just the facts. It went over ok, I thought. He seemed to grasp the idea of heaven and the finality of death.

So. Like a moron - I wake up this morning and say "my back is killing me". My little big guy gets very serious to the borderline of tears and says, "Daddy, I don't want your back to kill you. I don't want you to die. I love you - you need to stay here"

Needless to say, I had some explaining to do.
It made be feel like an for even bringing the subject up in the first place.

Parenting......my my, there should have been classes on how to be a parent in college. Mehhhh - I would have skipped them anyway. I guess we're all learning together.

Mike Folie, a playwright and friend of mine, wrote a play that has a line in it appropo to your conversation with your kid, Buzz.

"the truth is not something you should give to children raw"

Over here, we too, are having those discussions. They are hard. My son was three and a half when we had to go to my wife's uncles funeral in Providence. Needless to say my wife was upset, she and her uncle were close, hell I was upset...he was a great guy. But all my son did was ask questions. "who is in that box?" "Why is everyone crying?" "why are they putting the box in the ground?" Man it was a hard day. It is too big a concept to verbalize to a three and a half year old and now, even at 5+ it is still hard. We visit my fathers grave in Vermont when we are there and my son cries because I am sad all the while saying "I never got to meet Granpa Bill". That crushes me. Cause I want him to know that I had a father and what he was like. But its hard. The other thing that crushes me is when I am down about work or just blue or depressed my son will say something like "I wish I could poof your daddy back, he could cheer you up I bet."

I love my son. sorry to blather

Duncan. Yeah. I should have sauteed that info with a little olive oil, garlic and basil. Now I know.

I saw Monica Lewinsky walking to work today and all I could do is stare at her mouth. Not that she had nice lips or something - it was more like, "ohhhh that's where it happened". Now. I'm not saying what she might have done was good or bad. I'm just saying that I felt like I was looking at a bit of presidential history there.

Q: How many surrealists does it take to change a light bulb?

A: goldfish

Today is the fifth day of the fifth month. And if you enjoy Bob Dylan - then I am sure you know that this is the day that Bob's character in the song "isis" marries the teen princess. To me is all comes down to the end of the song:

She said "Where ya been" I said "No place special"
She said "You look different" I said "Well I guess"
She said "You been gone" I said "That's only natural"
She said "You gonna stay" I said "If you want me to, yes".

Isis oh Isis you're a mystical child
What drives me to you is what drives me insane
I still can remember the way that you smiled
On the fifth day of May in the drizzling rain.

To the guy that yelled at me on the train this morning:
I am going to find you and destroy you.
I KID, I KID.
Sorry I got you so upset.

Listen. As a seasoned train rider, I know to wait for the passengers exiting the train before boarding a train. How would I not know this? of course I know this, it's my company isn't it? It's not me....it's him - isn't it? I've been riding that steel hot dog of pain for years. I know the rules. No one came out the door for a few minutes and I went in. Lighten up tough guy.

What this world needs is hope.
Several little events in my little world all point to the fact that people don't care about other people anymore. It seems that Generation X is now Generation ME.

In one weekend I experienced:

* someone running a stop sign on a cell phone and almost t boning me
* my older son being rough housed by an older and underdisciplined child
* being cut in line at the home depot......TWICE
* being insulted by some one who said to me, "I'd rather pay you to do this than a Mexican"..........(wha??? two points for that)
* BLAH BLAH WHO REALLY WANTS TO READ THIS ( I could go on ).

I was talking to a lifelong friend about my theory and he agreed. He moved a year ago and said it was not the world, but the greater New York City area. Said once he moved away that he noticed he was calmer and less angry. Food for thought, but.....the further you move from NYC....the further you are removed.

So. I think this world needs hope. And lots of it.

"This portrait of Bob Hope was created on the set of his 1940 haunted house comedy motion picture, The Ghostbreakers. The painting is based on the plot of the film. Nothing is known about this artist of the surrealist school except his name, S.C. De Regil."

I heard that Helmer's in Hoboken burnt down. I had many good meals and times there. I liked that strawberry on top of the wheat beer.

They also had a big marble walk in old time urinal.
Good times.

Buzz...people around here are self absorbed to the point of almost complete isolation. All driven by some need to "BE SOMEONE" all the while failing to be anything. There are times I am guilty of it, but when someone blocks your driveway with their car because they can't be bothered to walk the extra half block, or sets your backyard on fire right before Christmas, or honks and gives you the finger and tailgates you when THEY almost hit me and my son by running a light while on the phone...all I can feel is despair.
The hope I find in my sons eyes. I stare deeply into them and remember that to play, at five years old, is to do anything.
It may be a cliche but it is true that Life is what happens while you are busy making plans.

Keep hope alive.

Keep the faith Duncan!

(())

I'd also like to just mention that the Bob Dylan live album 'hard rain' has the most amazing version of Maggie's Farm. It plays like a really fast car driven by a kid who is just learning how to drive stick.

((()))

I would also like to point out that this song by Paul Simon really does it for me. Even without the music I like it:

I have a wisdom tooth
Inside my crowded face
I have a friend who is a born-again
Found his savior’s grace
I was born before my father
And my children before me
We are born and born again
Like the waves of the sea
That’s the way it’s always been
And that’s how I want it to be

Nothing but good news
There is a frog in south america
Whose venom is a cure
For all the suffering that mankind
Must endure
More powerful than morphine
And soothing as the rain
A frog in south america
Has the antidote for pain
That’s the way it’s always been
And that’s the way I like it

Some people never say no
Some people never complain
Some folks have no idea
And others will never explain
That’s the way it’s always been
That’s the way I like it
And that’s how I want it to be
That’s the way it’s always been
That’s the way I like it
And that’s how I want it to be

If I could play all the memories
In the neck of my guitar
I’d write a song called
“Senorita with a necklace of tears”
and every tear a sin I’d committed
oh these many years
That’s who I was
That’s the way it’s always been

Some people always want more
Some people are what they lack
Some folks open a door
Walk away and never look back
I don’t want to be a judge
And I don’t want to be a jury
I know who I am
Lord knows who I will be
That’s the way it’s always been
That’s the way I like it
And that’s how I want it to be
That’s the way it’s always been
That’s the way I like it
And that’s how I want it to be
(Paul Simon)

(((())))

What about this song by ween?

Buckingham Green

A child without an eye
made her mother cry
why ask why
she kept her child clean
on Buckingham Green

The children saw the eye
as a sign from God
descending from the sky
it was alright to dream
of Buckingham Green

Summon the queen
spoke the child of eye
it's time to fly
turning fire to steam
on Buckingham Green

Talk about relaxing - you should check out Findley Lake, NY.
I ran in to a guy that was 117 years old. He was out jogging.
Time just seemed to stop there.

that church pic, I need a full size image to go with my barn collection I've started, come on man, ya' got one.
Here's a couple of barns, the first one I use as my desktop image, I ran across them in PA, one of these weekends I'm thinking about taking off and just going looking for good pictures, wanna' go?
