BGS: Don't get rid of the mini muffin pans!!! You might need those!! Good luck in the attic. Try not to spend too much time reading everything, though I know this is nearly impossible. Otherwise you'll be up there all day long. |

hismom, the toys get smaller and are less likely to have lots of little bits. You spend the same amount, but for less volume. By 12, my kid was mostly about her computer/games, board games, vestiges of Americn Girl doll stuff, some crafts, posters. But, from about 1-11! My kid had these Polly Pocket things with endless tiny shoes and stuff. And Betty Spaghetti and a woodne doll house. I used lots of ziploc backs, but still. The room that served as playroom was the "sort of dining room." We had an EIK, so we seldom used the dr, which mostly had a big table and chairs, and: A Playskool plastic kitchen A plastic work bench 2 level baby doll bed doll stroller doll bassinet/changing table doll house art/drawing table (kiddy) lego table Toy cash register, shopping cart etc. A wardrobe that I tried to turn into the place with bins where craft kits, paper etc. go Plastic tubs for stuffed animals and pull toys and whatnot. All of that stuff is bulky; in fairness to us, much of it was inherited from my sister's kids, and my kid and her friends loved to play with it BUT IT TOOK OVER THE ROOM!!!! Obviously, I remember it well...!! |

Wow, how cool to have so many comments on my little thread. I spent the weekend going through clothes in my girls' rooms. I have a huge bin plus bags of stuff. I thought we migt try to do a yard sale, but BGS has inspired me to donate what we can to Morrow. BGS, I will call that number and see what we have that might be appropriate—lots of clothes, coats, toys, puzzles (all pieces) and stuffies. A yard sale might be fun for the family, but our weekends are jam packed with things to do, plus time is money, right? |

Donation = satisfaction of helping someone less fortunate + tax deduction - stress of yard sale PS - If you don't get this done in time for the Morrow Turnover Sale (July), send it over to Prospect for their rummage sale (late August/early September)

I agree Brett, but sometimes at yard sales you end up selling things for crazy low prices. We don't really have any big ticket items, so I'd be out there all day selling things for 50 cents. |

VIG- Thanks! Believe me, the money that is earned really does go to so many places and people that really need the money! The stuff that is not sold at the end of the sale is then donated to Battered Women's Shelters and other places that puts the stuff to good use...The books are actually sent to a group of people in South Africa who distribute them. Nothing is thrown out except the junk that some people think we need to dispose of for them when they include it in the donation bags that they leave at the church...Why someone would not throw out ratty, faded old wreath bows is beyond me but as I have learned in the over 20 years that I have worked at this sale is that what is one man's junk is truly another man's treasure! Sorry for the thread drift... Have a great week! B

BGS, I just called the number above and got a machine (you know what I mean?). I need to get rid of it ASAP because if all goes smoothly with a home inspection next week, WE ARE MOVING! Can you give me more details, like when is the drop off? I was just up in my attic trying to see what can go and found 2 more huge bags of dolls and stuffed animals. My basement bathroom is filled with clothes, toys, decorative accessories, pocketbooks! I really find it depressing! Lots of the stuff is beautiful though plenty is well-loved. I know if I had a yard sale with stuff like this (even though there are probably more than hundreds of items above) I'd have to sell it all so inexpensively. A friend said puzzles and games sell for 25 cents. This is supposed to make me feel better, seeing the open space, not depress me because of all the money it cost (not me, my relatives spoil my kids and have given them way too much stuff, though I recently put my foot down.) I like the idea of donating it locally, but the Vets are coming Tues. for cothes and stuff. If I have to I might send it all that way. Thoughts? |

SHH (I'm old skool) - I know how you feel. I had to get rid of bags and bags and bags of stuff that people had given the kids and it was a bit depressing. We were saying that for birthdays and holidays that people should take toys from us not give them to the kids.....

Hank, I'm all broken up about this. Seriously, I will really miss all the people at Tuscan I run into on a daily basis. Yesterday I was thinking how weird it will be, we will just disappear over the summer. I am excited for the change, but sad about not seeing all the parents/friends I casually run into. It will be different.

You are moving to South Orange (oops, possibly--don't want to jinx it!)? This amuses me greatly since you reacted like I was coming out of left field for suggesting it in your moving thread! I hope everything goes smoothly for you. I vote for giving the stuff away. Moving is stressful enough without having to deal with yard sales. Think of all the good karma you will have! |

Camnol, was that you? I couldn't remember who said it, but I specifically remember the post. Yes, I was surprised I could find just about everything we were looking for. Life will change from now— we will be farther from the train, I can't walk to school with the kids, but at least it's just a few miles away as opposed to an hour away! Bonus is my husband is closer to the GW than now. We decided we will have a yard sale next Fri late afternoon & Sat early—just me & the girls. They voted to have it and donate some of the proceeds to charity. Since my husband will be working, it will be something different for us to do together.

Oh, I would love you (even more) for that Pippi. Yes, I figured I'd hold the sale from 9-12 on Saturday, good for the early birds. (Plus whomever would show up maybe Thurs /Fri late afternoon.) I tried calling Town Hall to find out about permits but no one answered. Plus I'll advertise in the News Record. I have tons of pocketbooks & jewelry too from my old inventory. |

VIG, Yep, that was me. I suggested South Orange because I know of quite a few people who moved there from Maplewood for larger houses and yards. It's great that you found what you were looking for without having to do "deep suburbia!" Sounds like the girls will have a great time with the yard sale! Let me know where it is--I'm in the market for a purse. |

VIG's ALL-GIRL YARD SALE! Come see cute girls in bikinis! Steals & deals include new and barely used purses, silver jewelry, tons of girls' clothing, smaller ladies' clothing, more stuffed animals and dolls than most normal people would ever allow in their homes, glassware, wooden puzzles, games with all the pieces, baby gear including a Lexington brand wooden crib, Graco Snugride car seat, exersaucer, stroller, home decor & accessories and much, much more! Look for details in next week's New Record and on the MOL classifieds, or PL for more info. (Bags and jewlery are suitable for gift giving...I even have little gift bags!) |

So the all-girl yard sale will not happen. I just have too much to do! The items will be donated and consigned instead. Yesterday we started bringing things to storage. It feels good to see more space where there was none, and throw away things we no longer need and/or want. I'm very proud of myself for not allowing Mr. Vig to take the bin marked "Thanksgiving and Halloween decorations." I hate that stuff. I'll get a couple of real pumpkins and call it a day. I am amazed at the power of off-white paint. I have callouses from gardening, but the landscaping looks pretty good. I hate toys.

I sent you an email about a few other items you might want. Yours for the asking. Sorry to disappoint Hank. Yesterday was a sad day for me. I got much more emotional that I thought I would. |

Ah, no purses for me. It's just as well, I'm doing a major clean out too. It's all earmarked for the Turnover sale. It would probably be bad form to bring more stuff in! I hope things are progressing smoothly. Getting a house ready to sell is a royal pain. |

Wow. I love having a clean house. It is so liberating not to be bogged down by tons of stuff. I woke up and made my bed. The counters and table are clean. The basement floor is visible. It is amazing! We did it all ourselves, though my mom came by once and yelled at me, that helped. I really don't think I could ever go back to living with clutter. It's just not worth it. It's so stressful! Even making a wash was easier because I was able to put everything away without jamming it into a too-stuffed drawer or closet. I hope, in our new house, we can organize the girls' stuff better, so they have access to crafts and games, and can more easily put things away themselves. If not, I know what I have to do, get rid of it all! This is something we should have done ages ago. Behold the power of the big, black garbage bag!

SOP, we are moving in August. Closing on the new house mid-Aug, going on a 9 day cruise (talk about planning, I planned it a few months back before we knew we were moving!) and this house hopefully late August. We will spend Labor Day weekend getting our new house ready before the older girls start their (new) school! The youngest will stay where she is for her last year of preschool. Things seem to be going ok here. Still managing to keep the house pretty neat, which is a feat unto itself! |
