Please ask questions or post a comment that you have regarding the viewing of "An Inconvenient Truth". I will attempt to answer all scientific questions and/or guide you to the appropriate website. I have been teaching AP Environmental Science for 8 years at Stuyvesant High School and enjoy student questions and dialogue involving environmental science.

Sincerely,
Jerry Citron

Jerry, you will find I'm sure, that most of the discussion of this topic takes place in the Political Soapbox and so you might want to post this there to get more responses. But beware; opinions are pretty well formed in the adults you will encounter there. There are not that many students (or student aged) people posting out here. So you might feel a bit like Sisyphus with some of the self proclaimed geniuses out there. You will have staunch allies in the likes of Notehead particularly, but most of the people who align themselves to the right of the political spectrum will attempt to cut and paste reasons why you are wrong about something rather than give any real thought to it.

Good luck though, it is an important topic.

I haven't seen the film yet, but I was thinking the other day about what will happen with all those nuclear reactors placed along waterways that will eventually flood? As the waterways die from the added polution caused from flooding, I'm sure the problem will be compounded, right?
(I was probably thinking this as I was trying to fall asleep, as this is my typical MO: think disasterous thoughts while trying to fall asleep.)

I wonder what people will complain about most: the collapse of the global economy, or the collapse of the ecosystem?

To all that post, I will only respond to sincere questions about global climate change. I will not engage in political commentary or rhetoric. jerry citron

But didn't Shanabana just ask a fair question? The first paragraph, not the second.

My understanding is that we are locked into a particular course and that even if we did everything PERFECTLY from here on in environment-wise (yeah, right...) it would take hundreds of years for the earth to reverse course.

True, or way off base?

Jerry, loosen up a bit. This isn't a classroom. It is a bulletin board and people will couch their questions many ways. The first part of Shanabana's post is exactly the sort of thing you solicited.

Seems like a scientific question.
Or are you only going to respond to people who have seen the film?

Jerry, when starting your blog, did you miss the following sentence?

"Topic title must be your member (user) name."

I think it was meant to keep this section a bit more personal.

Okay, I have a question: Is there any part of the movie that, in your scientific opinion, is hyperbole?

There are many uncertainties surrounding global climate change and human interaction, chiefly: we do not know with certainty if the global temperature increase during the past 100 to 150 years will continue. However, global circulation models (GCM"S) use atmospheric temperature, relative humidity and wind condtions to predict regional effects of global warming. GCM's although crude have provided good data that can be correlated with crrent events. ie sea level rising at a rate of 2.5 - 3.0 mm per year. Given the volume of our oceans this is catastrophic to costal areas. However, NYC as mentioned in the film will not be inundated with water in minutes. But any reasonable person knows this. The film presents the data as documented in all the currect climatology/meterology/physical geology texts and research papers. The film takes into account the dangers of the effects of green house gases.

Is that meant to be "current" or "correct"? In context, they each give a very different meaning to your response.

This is physical data. Not empirical. Therefore, it is accurate. However, the modeling programs are numerous and all suggest some negative consequence. Some more egarious some less so. It's good to be skeptical, but the research is rather compelling.

Jerry...reread the post.
You typed 'currect" in your post. Therefore you either misspelled current or correct.

Which is it please?
