BackGround- I am a self-taught computer guru. I attend school in Maplewood, I will be a sophmore at Columbia High School. I love the city, and mexican places, often times in the city. Additionally, I like to play Ultimate Frisbee. I also like magic, especially performing with cards. I can really do some neat stuff with a deck of cards and an audience of interested people. Lastly, I like computers...a lot. Politics- I largely side with democrats, though, I do feel they are the lesser of two evils. The whole system is corrupt. Other Stuff- I love to tinker with just about anything. Some of my earliest tinkering dates back to me sticking a Bananna in the VCR when I was little. It was shortly after I had an epiphany and realized I could make it stop blinking 12:00. School- I really do not enjoy school. I have many times considered home schooling, especially during the middle school years. I love to educate myself, whether it be culture, or electronics, buisness, economics, etiquette (spelling?) and lastly computers. I am hoping this year will be better, and I will be able to get out of some of these lower sections. I can't stand how nobody cares. The kids don't care, and then the teachers eventually don't care. It's a sad state of affairs. I have heard good things about the top sections though. Traits- I have am terribly caustic, often times it is mistaken for me being synical, but I really just see things differently. I enjoy the smaller things. I don't particularly like scary stuff, roll coasters et al. I do enjoy the cinema, My favorite movie is The Matrix . I have a good sense of humor, and try to be easy going. I like good music. One of my secret loves is Social Engineering...you know messing with people. Telemarketers are always fun, but it's more the challenge than the act. I have some really great stories, including one time the cops showing up at my house. I didn't think it could be illegal if they called me! Alas... I drift. Work- I work at the library, I do their computer stuff. So next time you see the gawky kid at the library carrying around computer stuff, give me a hello. I don't think to many MOL people frequent the library. I know I wouldn't be there if I weren't working there. I also do computer consulting. I have a natural ability to learn technical things, so this was the next evolutionary step. I plug my buisness a lot, but don't worry, I know it's lame to shamelessly plug yourself This wouldn't be complete without my trademarked signature. -enigmabomb- |

Enigmabomb: I'll have to look for you next time I'm in the library. I usually go at least once a week. I really look forward to meeting you. Are you ever there on Saturdays? You sound like a very bright person to me -- you have so many interests and you express yourself so well. The great thing about attending school at a place like Columbia, rather than being home schooled, is that you get to share ideas and perspectives with many others. This really makes learning more fun. When my son was at Columbia, he was able to take a lot of electives (the regular stuff bored him too) he really got much more interested in going to class once he had some control over the courses he took. Hopefully, you can choose to take classes that really interest you soon. Another possibility is taking adult school classes which meet in the evenings. some of them admit high school students. Have you joined any clubs at school? There are clubs at Columbia for all types of activities. It can be fun to go beyond the classroom and explore things on your own. It's been a pleasure meeting you on line. Hopefully you will post here again soon. |

I am hesitant to join any clubs at school, I don't really like the binding agreements they have. They are all very competitive. If I miss a meeting or something, I don't want to be reprimanded. The hierarchy within these little organizations I feel is quite ridiculous. A really good example of this is Ultimate Frisbee, They are all really serious about their sport, I respect that, but I just go to toss around the disc and relax after school. Where did the laid back-ed-ness of the sport go? My guidance counselor last year urged me to join a club. I joined student counsel, I did a lot of clashing mostly because the people in the counsel did not see eye to eye with my issues. There was a lot of imcompetence within that organization, their were also some really intelligent people. They tend to focus on the little things and seem to forget about practicality. Mind you, I still kept going to the meetings, and even did some of their fund raising work. I don't plan on joining next year even though I feel the president will be better. That might be part of the reason I wont join, they don't need my practicality. I never attended any of their dances or events...I am not that type. I was designing a website for the Class of 2004 but they REALLY dragged their heels on getting me the material needed. I still haven't gotten the content. -enigmabomb- |

Enigmabomb, Nice profile. I will also look for you at the library when I go in. You sound well rounded with many interests for being so young. Keep up the good work. Do you do computer tutoring? I have alot to learn. |

Enigmabomb: If you like ultimate, why don't you show up for the pick-up games Friday nights at lot? These should be a lot less serious than team practices. Many of the players are alumni who are just looking for a good time. There are also open tournaments around like last month's hat tournament at Memorial Park which you might find enjoyable. If you find the clubs at Columbia too competitive (its not all chess team, quiz bowl, math team, and science team) try forming your own. There must be others at Columbia who share your interests but want something low keyed. How about starting a magic club or getting together with other students to discuss films you have all enjoyed? Perhaps you can take turns renting films and showing them. The important thing is to get as much enjoyment our of high school as possible and a large school like Columbia offers so many possibilities. |

Nursie: I do computer tutoring. Be warned, I like to teach theory as well as practicality, good computing common sense will help you in the long run. -enigmabomb- |

Ed, Did something go wrong here? I would think that you would want to start your own thread, not tag onto Enigmabomb's. Enigmabomb, It was nice to see you the other night and I was glad to be the vehicle (and I use the term advisedly) of your making the in-person acquaintance of Cheindog. It's great to be a mom with a van, you never know whom you're going to end up chauffeuring around! |

I forgot to mention, in case you didn't know, that Mr. Healy at CHS is a magician. He sponsored a magic club when he was at SOMS. So if you are interested in doing something organized along those lines, I'm sure that he would be of assistance. |

Enigmabomb, Nice to meet you last night. Too bad you couldn't stick around a bit longer, but I understand the call to Ultimate. :-) Not that I could play for more than 10 minutes these days before collapsing on the ground. What are computer classes like these days at CHS? Is Linux big there? Are there Linux/Windows battles? When I was there I had to do Fortran with punch cards. :-( |

The computer classes are very good. I am in AP CompSci, and doing very poorly in it. I wish they would lay off the calc in that class! I know of 3 or 4 linux/unix people...in the whole school. And only one of them runs it like I do, the only OS on my computer. There are not battles, everyone likes games, and windows, and blue screens...err trash that last one. I am bummed out I didn't stay longer, Only 5 people showed up at the lot. It was not the best night ever for frisbee. When is the next shindig? -enigmabomb- |

Ahhh, Ultimate. Sweating, purple faces under the flourescent-lit blacktop. They have a team at Drew that competes, and a few of the players work for me. I'm not allowed to schedule them from 4-7 p.m. during the season, but I always get the team shirt since it was invented here. I can't remember what year you're in, Enigmabomb, but are you considering schools yet? I like to recruit them young J And Dave, we just ran out of punchcards at work - they were great for jotting down information or for notes and phone messages. I miss them! What exactly did you use them for? ;-D |

I have started considering some schools. I think I want to go to school for compsci. I am hoping to get early acceptance somewhere. I really don't know about too many colleges, but it is something in the back of my mind. How exactly are you afiliated with drew? -enigmabomb- |

I manage the PC support ops there (oops - I'm outing myself!). Drew has had a computer initiative program since 1984 that provides every incoming freshman with a computer and printer. We're the helpdesk and hardware support for this program. You can read all about it on our departmental homepage. They have a pretty decent compsci department, and I would guess that about half my student employees are majors in that subject. You sound like you'd fit right in! |

When considering schools, consider this: there is some GREAT Ultimate being played on the fields of the University of Miami campus. Unfortunately, I don't have much more to say in favor of the school. I'm going to have to track down the Ultimate in this area and throw my out-of-shape carcass into a game, I used to love playing. Oh, and I agree that The Matrix rules!! I can't wait for the sequels. (And the Lord of The Rings trailer looks amazing.) |

Enigma--if U of Miami comes into play, I have a cousin (my dad's first cousin) who is a Marine Biology professor there. Great guy, incredible town! If and when the time comes, let me know. |

Here's a neat little comparison of The Matrix with Plato's Allegory of the Cave. |
