I am feeling very overwhelmed. I know it's all good, as they say, but too many things to take care of, too much going on at once. Happy thoughts, sad thoughts, lots of emotions and boxes, boxes everywhere. Questions like what color dresses will the girls wear? and when will you make your sister's shower invitations? seem to come at the wrong time. We are going on vacation too, and my eldest has outgrown many of her bathingsuits and destroyed others. Picked up 2 at Target (all they had) and ordered a bunch from Old Navy. Except that I'm moving and I sent it to this house. Ack! One more concern, just add it to the list! I guess I can't handle stress and can't multi-task.

"may your first child be a masculine child." I believe this is from The Godfather...my BIL said it at our wedding too & it must have taken...3 times! |

DM, makes perfect sense that is is from the Godfather. I should have realized, it was one of their favorite movies and Mr. Vig watched it the night before our wedding (while I was at my parents' house) with my brother and future-ex-sister-in-law at our apt. |

VIG - whoever is asking you about your sister's wedding in MARCH is a bone head. Tell that person you'll get back to them in OCTOBER, at which point I am sure you will be feeling less overwhelmed. You do not need to design he shower invitations until December. Tell these people to CHILL, you got bigger fish to fry! let me know if there's anything I can do.... |

Well, the shower is in early Nov. because my mom didn't want to have it in the dead of winter! So, I will have to do the invitations in Sept. BUT NOT NOW. And my sister was asking about what color the girls should be in, because she can't make a decision for squat. I will tell M&M they are boneheads for bothering me with this right now. |

Can someone come over here with a whip?
Look at it outside...how else am I supposed to stay in all day and continue packing up the house? So, I can't complain about my mom and sister...mom has the girls from last night until tomorrow afternoon so I can pack. Sister & her fiance are coming over tomorrow to help too. My sister told me both brothers inquired about their "wives" (ooh, that sounds funny!) wearing MATERNITY Bridesmaid's dresses at the wedding. Just hearing that makes my mother giddy with delight. Brothers live 3-4 hours apart but it would be cute to have kids of similar ages. They are 7 years apart and there couldn't be two more completely opposite guys— at least they share a bond of brotherhood and love each other. The wives? Forget it. Maybe getting married will level the playing fields a little bit, but they are so different and don't particularly like each other, at least right now. One is kind of abrasive and a know-it-all, the other is very insecure (the Former BZ) and seemingly meek (but we know better!). Doesn't matter to me, I have my sister and love her and her fiance. And, I get along just fine with my brother's wives. And I'm not the easiest.

Funny Pippi & Hank...Mr. Vig says I AM easy. Anyhoo... I emptied out my closet. I had these suits that I loved. I tried one on, then the second, etc. I called my sister. "Are pantsuits with knee length jackets totally out?" She laughed. As an attorney, she kept a few, but most of mine are in a bag marked "late 90's-early 2000s knee length jackets/high-waisted pant suits. Please deliver to midwest." My RE agent buzzed in. I said "I'm trying on my pantsuits with long jackets. I think they're out." She agreed. She asked if she can come by for something. I said,"not now, I'm in a pantsuit with a long jacket!" Oh god, I crack myself up. What would I do if I didn't have me to entertain myself! So, I hope I don't get any invitations to fancy places. I have not a thing to wear! |

Someone is getting move/packing happy. This seems like one step beyond slaphappy. Make sure it's not contagious before you hang with friends and family, Vig. Every time I walk by your old house - which is every morning - I realize I will miss you even though we only see each other occasionally in passing. Good luck with the move and all. It sounds like you're getting there pantsuits, self-entertaining and all. |

VIG, hold on to them, they are sure to come back into style. That is what Mrs. K does. Still has her old hippy stuff. My Dad was similar. When he passed we found a stash of late 1940s wiiiidddddeee ties with hand painted flamingos and such. These were really popular right after WWII.

VIG - I know you are only moving a shortish distance, but moving day is always very hectic. I am more than happy to run down snacks, sandwiches, sodas and coffee during the day as I imagine you won't have time to do any of that - just let me know when. SOP

Sometimes the short distance moves can be the real killers, precisely because the short distance lulls you into thinking it isn't as big a deal ... or at least that's what happened to us when we moved within Maplewood about 12 years ago. We also have several weeks overlap with two houses, which further lulled us. Big mistake! It was much more stressful than the long-distance move we had made to come here from Texas seven years earlier. That time, we were forced to plan and organize it all in advance and it went much smoother. (Of course we also had no kids and somewhat less stuff then which helped.) However, it sounds like VIG is being much more diligent about organizing her short distance move than we were. |

Thanks all, such kind words. Newly married Bro got to us by 8am and helped for a few hours before work. Mr. Vig said the $1k wedding gift was well worth it for his help...$850 probably wouldn't have gotten as much assistance. (JUST KIDDING!) Sister and her fiance got here at 10am and we worked until almost 6pm. Attic, garage and crawlspaces are almost emptied. We have a huge pile o' junk that hopefully Mr. Hodges will come and remove. A bunch of bags and assorted items for the Vets, including a crib and highchair I realized are just not worth saving. Maybe I will post them for free and if someone wants them, come and get them. Basement was tough. I thought we cleaned out toys but there's always more stuff. We threw a lot out. My sister is one who has always spoiled my kids, and seeing the mass amounts of stuff hopefully has made her realize too much is not a good thing! She said her kids will be allowed to have 2 toys. We have almost the entire house boxed up and ready to go. I don't know what's customary, I guess most people don't have all their boxes in the living room, but I can't imagine it would make it harder for them. Maybe Monday morning we will move some boxes outside to open up the house a little bit. Oh, my sister and fiance took the cat! When they came in he started playing with her and we jokingly suggested it. I think their 2br. apt. will be good for her. She can sit on the windowsill and check out 8th Ave in Park Slope. Unfort. she peed in the cat carrier. I'm sure P was not too happy, he's a neat freak, esp. with his car. My sister is like me, not too much love for animals (sorry guys, we're missing that gene) but the cat is so easy and sweet, she'll be fine. We will have to go pick her up...I doubt they will want to bring her back in their car, but we can arrange that! We took them to Reservoir for pizza and salad to say thanks. They were very impressed with the pizza. I really hope they eventually move here...my sister is a little disappointed they didn't buy our house — we offered it to them for a good deal, but planning a wedding and all they didn't want to over extend themselves. Anyway, having my siblings here helping us, my kids at my parents being well taken care of, I am very thankful and feel very lucky. Bro is going crabbing today...hopefully he will get a lot of crabs and we will have a nice Sunday dinner with the family! |

Thanks BGS, that is very kind. We are moving in tomorrow, but won't sleep there until Tues. night, and we first have to get the girls from my aunt's house kind of late, so we won't be able to enjoy a home cooked meal just yet. Bro caught 220+ crabs, so I had some tonight. Yum! Girls are taken care of until Tues nite or Weds am, we have a lot of work to do tomorrow. Wish me luck all, I might have to come back with a new screen name because I will have a new email. TTYS!!! |

I'm in!!! I've missed you all! Took forever for the Cablevision guy to hook us up...no three prong outlet in my office, BUT WE LOVE IT!!! Have been working our butts off moving stuff in, unpacking but it's so worth it. We are going to be so happy here. Pippi, call my cell later. I have to get the girls and then I'll be home, most likely late afternoon, early evening. I'd love for you to see the place.

I never said painless...I never want to move again! We have discovered there are different bugs in SO. Last night some type of grasshopper, about 4 inches long, hopped his way into our room. I was attacked by a giant moth in my bathroom...he was just brown, but these speckled black, red and white ones just like to hang out on the tile. No doubt we have some screens we need to attend to!

Oh man, it's hard to start over. The roof leaks in a million places, there are very few outlets (barely any with 3 prongs!) and few overhead lights, so as darkness falls we run around with flashlights! The house has a lot of potential, but it's going to be a long haul. I remember moving into our other house, and how overwhelmed we felt early on. We are definitely trying to prioritize here, hence the call to the roofer yesterday and plans to update the electrical next. (Then soffets and gutters and dealing with exterior woodwork that looks to be in bad shape.) Somewhere in between I'll need to paint my girls' rooms and remove some wallpaper in the process. Then of course we'll need to add a powder room, and deal with the kitchen and baths...AAAAACK! Mr. Vig knows dead animal and swears there's a (new) stench in the basement. Bailey's thread and concerns raised about bats and other intruders make one wonder. We just got back from a long cruise. No relaxing really, but lots of activities with the kids. I got past my Disney anxiety...we spent a day at Magic Kingdom (barely 6 hours really) and saw the highlights...our tablemates have been many, many times and got a map for us and mapped out every step to maximize our time there. It really helped us see and appreciate the most. Now we know we will have to go back for a few days and stay there. It was a nice way to see a variety of places, and we knoe we want to go back to Mexico with the kids too. I couldn't believe to color of the water and they really enjoyed swimming, snorkeling and kayaking. Now back to reality and boxes. |

So things in the new place are coming together. My parents came over and my mom helped me with some unpacking/organizing, esp. in the girls rooms. (Not to mention she watches the sales at Staples and got them all their school supplies!) We had a few takers on the FREE MOVING BOXES and seeing less brown carboard really does make a place seem more homey. Plus, she brought me some old lamps and now we can see where there was no light before! Most importantly they LOVE the house and agree it has a lot of potential. I was really afraid my mom would think I was nuts. Well, she my have before their visit but now each time she calls she tells me how much she loves the house. DId I tell you I love my mom? She's the best. She's coming out here on her day off to help me. The roof issue is not as bad as I thought. I can't wait to get it repaired so we can move on to the electric. It will be nice to not have extension cords running all over the place and not be able to see once darkness falls. Today I realized my bathtub is pretty nice— long and deep. Unfortunately, the knobs in the tub don't turn, not even the drain, so I can't take a bath in there. The girls tub is too shallow. There is a clawfoot tub on the 3rd floor. It's short, but very deep. I might have to make that bath a temporary spa for myself. Right now it's the prettiest bathroom in the house—but trust me, that's not saying much. |

Oh VIG- I hope that you can get the long tub fixed...That was the one mistake that we made when we had our bathroom redone. We got rid of our big old tub and had a sleek new tub installed but it does not have the length of the old tub and so soaking is out for those of us that are tall..I could sit in our old tub with my legs straight out and they would be under water all the way...and I have long legs... Those big old long tubs are the very best and when I build my dream summer shack some where for retirement I am finding a big old long tub!!!! Meanwhile...enjoy your new home and all that goes with it! Heart- B |

So yesterday was a big day! Pippi finally got to see the place and we had other friends for dinner. I had to get Mr. Vig get dishes and wineglasses out of storage, but it was a pretty simple meal...a big salad and pasta with homemade vodka sauce. I asked him to pick up some Italian bread when he was getting the wine, dishes and glasses but he forgot. No biggie, my mom had bought us an Italian sort of spinach pie, so I served that too. Easy and it was so nice to have friends over. I forget how great it can be to entertain, even more so with a stress free meal. The kids kept themselves busy and I think everyone had a good time. I do miss having my kitchen open to the dining room. The way we configured this space, the two rooms are not in sight of each other. There's good and bad with that. It's not so far, so it's mostly fine. ANyway, we look forward to entertaining more. Pippi, you two have to come soon! |

Midnight's back! Mr. Vig picked her up from her Park Slope pad last night. My sister cried. They fell madly in love with this old girl. She's been busy exploring the place. She really wants to go sit on the porch but I'm not ready to let her wander. In the old house, we'd let her sit on the front stoop or deck out back and she started getting courageous enough to venture into the grass. I think she needs more time in the house before I can let that occur. She slept with my 10yo last night. The girls are so happy to have her back. We also might adopt Jessie, whom the girls have not stopped talking about. Just want to give Middy an opportunity to get used to her new digs. Not even totally unpacked and it's almost a full house! Today I make the invitations to my sister's bridal shower. They should have been out, a few weeks ago, but with the move and vacation we were delayed. Good thing, because the restaurant is changing hands so we need to change venues! It was supposed to be at my mom's neighbor's place in SI...they begged her to have it there, a pizza/pasta joint and although it was not exactly what she wanted she booked it. She kept asking for direction cards and they were blowing her off. Finally, they told her the place was for sale. Coincidentally, a new patient of hers (she's a dental hygienist) mentioned HIS restaurant which is one of her favorite places. He is the one who told her of the rumors of the other place being for sale. His place is open the day she needed, so with a little stress and aggravation, we have our new place. It could have been a lot worse. |
