Looks beautiful! I love the inset look. Still not sure if we are going to splurge for it or not.

Wanted to relate something my friend did...she has similar "furniture" style cabs with no "toe kick"...she ended up installing a piece of wood in back of the furniture look fronts to prevent dust/gross stuff from getting under the cabinet. You can't even tell it is there because it is painted black and about 3 inches behind the front of the cab. She said stuff does get trapped between the wood and the front of the cab, but it is much easier to clean than under all the cabs.

Your contractor may be doing something similar, just wanted to pass it along.

Thanks Wendy.

I had thought of that, but with a Swiffer it's pretty easy to get under the cabinets so I'm not too worried.

Today a few more cabinets were moved in (no doors yet) and all my appliances were moved out of my living room, so it's almost a living room!

The mudroom filled up quickly with the fridge. As a matter of fact, the whole room filled up quickly. It's not a big room, but at least it will be efficient. I had hoped to fit the microwave in the pantry cabinet, but it will be tight so we came up with an alternate solution that my husband is not too happy about. (Just a lower cabinet outside the work triangle.) It's a compromise for sure, but I promised him if it fits in the pantry we'll keep it there, if not we'll have to deal. I just really don't want it on the counter.

I feel like the layout makes the most of the small space. I have lots more storage space and more counter space. Plus, you can have one person (HIM) loading dishes and one person (ME) cooking and (ok, we're both thin but work with me here) not be on top of each other. Very important to me. Plus, it works for my kind of entertaining which is buffet style, and don't do the dishes until the next day (unless my mom comes over and it kills her and she makes me put my wine down and help her with the dishes.)

So, I'm happy.

So, we're at somewhat of a standstill for two weeks while Greg gets married and takes a honeymoon. The nerve!

Ideally, the plumbers will be back soon (today?) to finish plumbing the kitchen sink/dishwasher/disposal. Also, the electricians should be back (today?) to finish hooking up the stove and some of the lights.

Something really strange happened with the halogen fixtures. This ambery liquid dripped out of one and appeared on the edges of all of them. I thought maybe there was plastic left inside but the fixtures themselves burnt. The plastic was totally charred! The electricians told me it wouldn't have caused a fire, but nonetheless, all these fixtures will have to be replaced. They told me they will send the old ones to the manufacturer.

I tried to go to the lighting store Greenetree recommended on Bowery. Last Saturday I picked my sister up (she lives midtown) and we headed downtown. I made a wrong turn and ended up on the Williamsburg Bridge, Ooops. Turned back around and came back, but I HATE that bridge. I had a flashback from when I was a kid driving on that bridge and in the righthand lane Manhattan-bound you feel like there's no railing. My sister almost had a heart attack because I started complaining of a vertigo attack. Ahh. She takes things too seriously. So I was hyperventilating, what's the big deal?

We got back into Manhattan and circled around only to realize the San Gennaro Festival was going on and parking was impossible. Plus my sister was freaking out because it was Yom Kippur and she thought my mom was getting mad because we should be with her fasting and atoning for all our sins. Guess what? I don't fast and I don't atone.

We ended up parking downtown and walked up and got sucked into the feast and spent way too much money on a stupid dart game ($30+) and chocolate covered marshmallows ($11!!!) for the girls. Then we walked up to Houston and around to go downtown but my sister was freaking out that I was trying to find the lighting store and I didn't really want to deal with her neurosis (but I do love her, she's just impossible) so we wlaked back to the garage and rushed and drove to SI and my mom wasn't even angry. (Or at least didn't mention it.) So, it was a wasted day.

Last night I felt like garbage. Sinuses were killing me. I made a nice, hot bath and soaked. The tub is so deep, it's perfect. I thought, all the dust, all the stress. A nice hot bath makes it all worthwhile.

Yesterday we got a BIG surprise. Greg came by right before he left for his honeymoon to check up on things and clean up our yard.

Both my husband and I greeted him with, "shouldn't you be on a honeymoon ore something?" It was very thoughtful of him to see to it we didn't have big piles of debris sitting around needlessly for two weeks.

He also said he'd contact the electrician so I can get my stove hooked up. But I haven't heard from those guys yet.

The sink, dishwasher and disposal were taken care of Friday, thanks to Dave at Gateway. (Hi Dave, I figure you MUST be reading this or we connect telepathically.) I post it and next thing I know...poof, the big white van pulls up and my plumbing is taken care of. Excellent!

So, I've moved on to the toaster oven we got as an engagement gift that's been sitting in the attic for probably the entire time we've been in this house. I kind of forgot it was there. I haven't "cooked" so much in three months! You can bake a good quesadilla in one of those things.

And I'm still enjoying my baths...

Hello all.

Long time no see (any progress).

Ok, so yesterday the electricians came and hooked up my stove. Now I just need to figure out how to put it all together.

Hopefully early next week the counter will be installed. Yes, honeymoons do end at some point!

I have to tell you all about good customer service.

You see, the lighting has been driving me batty. I think I've mentioned that. I would like to settle on the kitchen and dining room pendants so I can cross it off my list.
One catalog I like is Schoolhouseelectric.com. I first saw a product in a magazine. I've emailed Rejuvenation too and called them but they would only go so far with the advice, and basically what I wanted was custom so it gets more expensive and can't be returned. Schoolhouse Electric has a fixture I do like, but I'm not sure about the shades. I emailed a question and description of the rooms, and a rep emailed me with advice and mentioned without seeing a picture. I emailed her back asking if I sent a picture, would she mind. Another rep emails me, says to go ahead and send some jpegs and they'll look them over and give me a call to discuss. How cool is that? I'm so impressed, I might even look into my bathroom lighting from them too. I'll let you know.

Blueberry muffins.
Apple cinnamon raisin muffins.
(ok, they were from a mix but I did add blueberries and raisins myself)

Baby bok choy sauteed with garlic.
Mashed potatoes.
Mustard glazed salmon.

Mmmm, I love cooking!
My six year old even tried everything! (She loves bok choy now!)
It's nice to cook a meal after all this time.

Still cooking here, but I FINALLY ordered my lights!
($800 later...)

I photoshopped it to see how it would look.

kitchen dining lights

I decided NOT to do the two-tone ith brass, but did do a combo of antique pewter/brushed nickel in the dining room and polished nickel/brushed nickel in the kitchen. I loved the two-tone, but my mom thought it would be too much. (I have a tendency to over accessorize at times.)

PLus, I ordered a very classic bath fixture. I will get a cheaper one for the girls' bathroom.

Moi?

I've broken a watch and a bracelet in two days so I feel kind of naked.

Back to the kitchen. Here's the coolest thing. I was kind of worried about drawer space for silverware (not silverware but utensils), you know. We have 2 sets of 4 drawers, but they're pretty narrow. Anyway, I was looking at organizing stuff online and found a wooden drawer organizer. We have a large cabinet perpendicular to the stove that was going to have 2 pull-out shelves, and I thought, if I add an extra shelf, and it slides out, it could function really well for utensils storage. So, I'm at Ikea a week or so ago, and find birch utensil organizers. Not sure if the size is right, but I pick them up. Greg trimmed one (creating a perfect slot to hold chopsticks or straws) and the two of them fit perfectly, and will hold 2 sets of silverware and some plastic kiddy utensils and some knives etc. really organized and convenient for cooking and the dishwasher. Cool!

Little things like that can make my day!

Now I'm confused; your appliances are in & working, but the counter tops, light fixtures & furniture are fake?

Wow- I can't post any pictures & you post maunfactured pictures! Between the two of us, it's like one normal person's pictures.

Congrats on getting closer and closer.....

It looks like your walls are a kind of sage, am I right? The green family seems to be popular for kitchens these days...

How long has it been now?

Countertops- FAKE
Pendant Lighting & Dining Room Fixture- FAKE
Left Hand cabinetry- FAKE (No doors yet on the left, and the leftmost cabinet is not made yet)
Clean table- FAKE (I photoshopped out all the crap that was all over the table)
Sage Green - FAKE The kitchen is a gray that I love, the dining rooms is a gray tha I don't love, but I'm playing with different color ideas (like gray green) but I'm going to wait for all the cabinetry to be in before I change the color.

It's been about 3 months, but that includes a week off waiting for inspections and a 2 week honeymoon.

Wow Shh, maybe instead of renovating I will just have you make a photoshop of my dream kitchen and have it made into wall paper.
