I'm with you on the 4AM ideas - I think of amazing (IMHO) essay ideas, solve problems, recall extremely important things that need to be done or just the right way to hadle a difficult situation - it's all so clear to me that I write nothing down so as not to wake myself further...and in the morning it's all gone. One would think I'd learn - but I don't...

The few times I have had butts in my face I always give the offending anatomy a good jab with a handy object (never use your own hands, a foot is acceptable as long as you're wearing pointy shoes). Seriously, I have used my purse to jab people, and the "how dare you" look they give is classic - I Just stare them right down until they realize what they are doing.

One of the reasons I dislike cruises is the buffet scenario. These lethal people will run their own grandma over to get at a choice entree.

Mem- I should've used that trick. Especially since I was holding a chopstick.

Shh- loose on the counter, but still...

I will do salad bars, but I'm very picky. One thing looks old or crusty & I'm outta there. I won't do buffet brunches. I read an article once on how the fancy hotels use them to get rid of the leftovers from the week before. So, fresh supplies come in the next Monday & the lox you are paying $29.99 per head to eat are from last week. I've been to many a Saturday night event at hotels where I saw the h'ors d'ouvres from the night before out on the brunch buffet the next morning.

I am actually mortified. It takes a lot to embarass me... I've gotten sick to my stomach in the middle of a job interview, my underwear has fallen down around my ankles running for the train, I've shown up in full black tie regalia on the wrong night. I never batted an eye thru any of it.

But now, I could just die.

I am going to London on Wednesday night & returning on Friday night. I'd have liked to stay for the weekend, but a very dear friend's daughter is getting married on Saturday and we are going to the wedding. We accepted long before the meeting in London came up.

I realized yesterday that, in a cleaning frenzy, I had thrown out the invitation and had no idea what time the ceremony is. I only know it's Saturday night.

I was planning on asking another friend when we saw them for dinner tonight, but the one's father died, so we cancelled dinner & they obviously won't be at the wedding, since they'll be out of town. So, I bit the bullet and had to call my friend.

Luckily, the one who answered also has a cleaning neurosis, so when I told him what I did, we had a good laugh about it. OK, I said, see you on Saturday. We're looking forward to it. No, we'll see you Friday.

Huh?

You're kidding, right?
No.
I told him I'd call back.
My flight does not come in until Friday at 11p. And TS took off today and tomorrow, so it's gonna be hard for her to take the afternoon off.

I begged her. You've got to go to this wedding.

So, she said she would do it. She'll hate it, I know. Especially since our other friends won't be there. Being friends of the parents, she won't know anyone else. Bless her.

I have to see if I can cancel this trip. My boss is also going to be at the meeting, so maybe it won't be a problem.

I cannot believe I did this. His voice when I told him I couldn't make it was rather flat.

I feel awful.

You know, I think a friend of ours (ours being mine & Pippi's) aactually missed a wedding because she had the date wrong.
That's quite a dilemma.
Let us know what happens.

Passing thought:

Clinton lied about having sex in the Whitehouse. He hurt his family. No one died. People screamed for blood, wanted to drag him thru the streets but settled for spending millions and millions of tax dollars on a blue dress.

Bush lied about weapons of mass destruction. Thousands have died; the surpluss he started with is now a trillion + debit. And people are willing to overlook these minor indiscretions. I guess at least he didn't cheat on his wife?

I must confess that I don't get it.

Yeah-
And I made the train!

BTW- the wedding may be a non-issue. I just caught an error that my vendor made & it is at a very, very bad place in the process. I had to call my boss at home to let her know. I asked her how I should proceed: call the project manager, call the VP, look for a new job? She laughed, but she didn't say not to look for a new job.

Oh- if I'm still going to London, I will arrive at the wedding at midnight, in jeans. Kind of a reverse Cinderalla situation. I'm having the car take me straight there from the airport.

Why are some people just little shits? You know the type - a mistake is made, the whole team pulls together to resolve & move it forward. Then, some little frustrated career-climbing wannabe low-level manager (who was nowhere to be seen when everyone was finding a solution for the problem) shoots off a snippy e-mail, copies everyone in the world, and lets us all know that she can't be held accountable for someone else's mistake. And you were asked to be exactly when????

So, my secretary is going to break up with her boyfriend over the election. I know this because I can hear her screaming "tell me why you voted for Bush" into the phone. I have to admit, I haven't been this depressed over an election outcome in a long time.

I'm not surprised, tho. Bush supporters are passionate about supporting their candidate. Almost everyone I know who voted for Kerry was really voting "not Bush". There is no passion or conviction about their candidate (except maybe Obama - I think he will be the first Black president). The Democrats need to pull their heads out of their asses and pull together a platform that they actually believe in. Not this running in circles, throwing programs at the wall to see what sticks.

Hey, it's my blog; I can do a little political rant if I want to.

Although, I have to wonder about my secretary. She's a grown woman and they've been living together for over a year. Did she not know his politics before?

So, I'm still going to London. And the irony is that, being in Pharma, for the next 4 years, I apparently still have a job.

I apologize for the bad words. I write them in because I like the cool little red dots that pop up. Neat effect. But, apparently, when you add plurals, it doesn't catch it.

At least I get to say that, after the election, I'm leaving the country...

So- back from London. I met many ex-Pats who say they are not coming back until at least 2008. Everywhere I went, people were asking "how did it happen"? There are many who genuinely fear that 4 more years will bring more war. I read several news articles in the papers about Americans being more worried about gays and abortion than existing in the world. It is clear that, we as a nation, are regarded as not caring about the rest of the world.

The weather was beautiful & I took myself to tea. As long as I get real scones & tea while I'm there, I'm happy. I had to smuggle back a whole lot of tins of cookies & goodies in my suitcase from Fortnum & Mason. I wanted to have them shipped, but apparently cookie tins are a threat to US National Security, so they can't ship them. Who knew?

We were invited to a mourning party last night. I found out something very important: My friend, S, one of our hosts, is the most talented man in the world. He does drywall and is a very lethal bartender. If you are considering renovation, but dread the idea, PL me. I can put you in contact with this guy. He can mix you drinks to keep you calm while he build your new room.

Meanwhile, I'd like to thank him and his OH for a very fun evening and my first hangover in 3 or 4 years.

There's nothing wrong with a little hangover now and then -- especially when we had a lot to mourn! Maybe in 4 years we'll be doing the same at a celebration party instead.

Don't go renting out S yet, I still have lots of things he needs to get done at home :-)

The OH

Awww, c'mon. Think of the money you could make. And I promise to take only a 5% commission of the bookings.

BTW, I was supposed to repaint a part of the den yesterday that had to be repaired after running some wires. Since I was too queasy to take the smell of paint, ya wanna send the bartender over to do it?

I'm in a little better mood today. My very nice secretary made me a little refrigerator-sized color copy of the "US of Canada/Jesusland" map & laminated it for me. And I found a place online to order the full-size 2005 calendar.

BTW - TS went to the wedding & had a great time. They had a big band & fabulous food. I apparently missed the party of the century. I called her when I cleared customs at 11:45 and the reception was still going. If my limo driver hadn't gotten lost, I would've made dessert. As it was, people were just leaving the ballroom when I straggled in, 24-hours unwashed and disheveled in my jeans and sweatshirt.

I introduced myself to the bride, apologized for missing her wedding & she called over her new hubby "Honey! This is Greenetree, dad's friend who mixed up the date"! She has her father's sense of humor.

I washed up, changed, went back down to the bar for a drink & attended the brunch the next morning. I have the most wonderful friends; I was forgiven my transgression. I also wrote an apology/thank you note & mailed it off. And bought a calendar.

Hmmm. I feel better knowing I was not alone.

On another note, I have, for no particular reason, been thinking about internet scams. It occurs to me, again for no particular reason, that some people who are members of this community may be con artists. Not that I have any particular poster in mind, but, theoretically, signs could be someone who posts for the very first time and has a horrible, horrible sob story about a good person who was in the wrong place at the wrong time, several times in a row. A really clever scammer would post a very selfless tale about someone else they are trying to help. And wouldn't ask for money; eventually someone in this overly-liberal, naive community would offer to start a fund or ask where to send donations.

In this completely theoretical situation, I have to wonder if Jaime would be tempted to revoke their membership????

The fat police are coming for me.

It's been nice to know you all, but if I evaporate in the dead of night, they took me away to The Farm.

In order to have the company continue to subsidize our insurance benefits, we need to "volunteer" to participate in the health profile program within 90 days. So, Tuesday morning, I went for my profile.

I have seen the Devil. She has the perky personality of Meg Ryan and resembles Stacey Dash (without the expensive sylists). How could anyone so sweet and pretty be so evil?

Not only did she weigh me (clothes on) but.... she whipped out a tape measure and measured my waist and hips. Over my clothes!!!!

Well, it's been a rough couple weeks. TS is in full Fall cooking mode & I've been on one business trip a week for the past month. Not usually good for my weight.

So, I expect that when I get back in the office on Monday, my voice mail will be full of messages from Satan's Little Helpers. "We want to help you", they will coo. "Did you know that people with your BMI at your age are at high risk for Type II diabetes"? The alarm will sound. And they will hunt me down and drag me kicking and screaming to a nutritionist.

Yes, dammit. I do know all of the health risks. Do you not realize that I study these things for a living? Do you think I prowl alleys, looking for donuts and cake to steal out of dumpsters? Or that I don't know that a mayo-laden tuna sandwich is a poor choice, but that it's better than the brisket dinner, and the cafeteria has slim pickings. Should I opt instead for the Poptarts or Butterscotch Krimpets (yuck!) in the vending machine?

Stop locking me in a room with 10,000 PowerPoint slides and a plate of brownies and cookies for 4 hours. Don't have an 8:30 meeting and then throw an emergency on my desk at 5:30 and think I'm going to get home before 8p. And puh-leeze don't think I'm going to exercise at 5a or 9p. When am I supposed to do laundry?

But, I'm not bitter. How could I be? Everyone knows fat people are jolly.....

Greenie, I think most of the scams here are limited to the classified area. I know the David Coble fund raising is legitimate and that is the only one I know about.

With that said I would be very hesitant to respond to a private line from someone who posted a sad story and then emails you for money.
