Interesting Bob. When we moved in in '96 (and over the next few years) I bought enough antique-y gold framed mirrors to outfit a half dozen semi-attached houses in Staten Island. (You know as they say, you can take the girl out of...) Now I lean towards the pewter and chrome, but haven't thrown everything else out, I just mix it up. (Ok, the cheesy brass chandeleirs did have to go.) I like to be eclectic. My living room sofa has these huge antique brass nailheads, so the fan we got last year has the antique brass trim, as does the fireplace door/screen thing we put in 5 or 6 years ago. But, not everything else in the room does have brass. I guess if you think back 15 years ago, most people wore yellow gold and today platinum/silver/white gold is more in favor. |

Here is the latest kitchen pic.
Crown moulding will go above the cabinets. Those uppers are eally cool. There is a bank of drawers next to the stove, eventually (when they're in!) they'll hold all my cooking utensils. |

Georgous! What type of wood is on the floor? I love it! You have basically the style of cabs I want (but I'm going with a natural cherry instead of painted, and I think I want an additional bead on the frame part). Right now I'm trying to decide between inset and full overlay cabs. I love the look of inset but my cabinet maker will charge me about $3k more. The hubster doesn't care but of course would rather spend the extra money. What to do. How is the counter doing now that they re-caulked? |

Nothing was Photshopped out! The floor is red oak with I forget what stain. American Walnut maybe? The counter has not been revisited yet. I guess it just looks better in the picture, but the seams and a few side edges don't look good. |

Get OUT! the counters are very clean and neat. I am impressed. A comment on the seams: I thought they looked pretty good when I saw them on sunday...the edges are a little rough as Shh has mentioned, but the seams on the countertop are starting to fade, IMHO. |

Cool. I will definitely be going with soapstone as well and I think it looks awesome. Hopefully they will fix the seams to your satisfaction. Love the counter to ceiling cabs too. Congrats on a great project! |

Thanks all! Note: counters are not neat now. Hubby came home, mail went down, lunchboxes went up. |

My husband said maybe we'd be done by my birthday or Christmas. At this point, I'm thinking Valentines. Little by little it's getting done. It really does look nice and is very efficient. The glass front cabinets flanking the sink are in, maybe today the shelves will be put in so I can get some glasses out of the attic and stick 'em in there. (Though most have broken so new glassware is on my holiday list, I think my aunt will be giving me some this weekend.) Supposedly the electricians will be installing all the fixtures today. It will be nice to get all the boxes out of the living room. Once the lights are in I'll post photos. Of course, there's always a bit of drama. Yesterday we spent HOURS cleaning out the girls toys in the basement. I started several weeks ago. We finally got it all done, just about, and were ready to vaccuum. For some reason my husband peeked into the boiler room and saw the water. 5pm or so the Sunday of Thanksgiving weekend. He had just been resting on the couch, trying to fight a cold. He told me he thought to himself, he'll just take it easy, bathe the girls and rest up before dinner. 6 1/2 hours later, weak and weary he finally came up to bed. He replaced the water heater. He got his hot shower this morning at least. when he discovered the water he called his dad for advice. Around 9ish, hs dad calls back and tells me his son should have called him sooner. "But he called you when he saw the water." It was much better that he was able to do it without his dad. A lot less cursing and fighting. His dad is good at fixing things, but has absolutely no patience to do it anyway but his own, and he has a tendency to do things a bit half-assed. My dad possibly could have helped too...if we needed someone to throw stuff and mumble "jesus christ..this freakin' sh•t..." It's done. We have a brand spankin' new 50 gallon hot water heater. (Upgraded from 30.) It was the biggest we could have fit down the steps and the biggest they had at HD. It never ends... |

Yesterday was very hectic. The electricians were here, Greg and his helper, plus a cleaning woman. I was a neurotic mess. I am having my family over this weekend, so I wanted the house to be decent. Yesterday was the only day this week I could get someone in. She did a fabulous job at least! I kind of had a little hissy fit when my master bathroom light's screws got misplaced somehow. It was an expensive fixture (at least for me) and I got very frustrated. End result, I'm not 100% sure if they got misplaced, if the company sent shorter ones than they should have or what, but the company is sending us the correct screws. I am very happy with the kitchen and dining room lighting. (Though I haven't nitpicked it just yet.) The overall effect is as beaustiful as I might have hoped. The pendants and dining room fixture fit in nicely, but are a touch dramatic. Nice jewelry. Also, notice the glass front cabinets flanking the sink. They look great. I just filled them with the white dishes/accessories I have (totally functional, nothing purely decorative) and I love it. I have to say Greg has been great. He must be frustrated himself that this has taken a bit longer than he anticipated, but it's coming along. If anyone needs cabinets for a kitchen or bathroom, I highly recommend him. |

I know Bob. We will most likely have Greg build a radiator cover/buffet on top of it and on that wall, but painting it is on my list. That I will do myself. |

Thanks all! I've decided to make chicken marsala. I found a pretty easy recipe, and it will fit in my buffet better than the brisket would. I am also making caesar salad, tilapia with tomatoes and olives, spaghetti with garlic (so if anyone wants to eat the pasta with the chicken or fish the flavors will complement each other), sauteed mushrooms and another veggie or two. |

Happy Bob? I did it.
I painted it with the same paints I used for the curtain rod, which I did to match the antique pewter light fixture. |
