I am starting to get a bit non chalant about this but both THE READER and BUST are screening by invitation at a festival in, of all places, South Dakota. Now, politics aside (SD is not my favorite state politically) it is cool that somewhere in Sturgis about a dozen people are seeing both films. I am sure BUST will complete insult their sensibilities. At least I hope so.

And now theres the MOL MOVIE Still accepting donations HERE Just think of it, if every member of MOL (who can reasonably afford it) donated 20 bucks...which is about the cost of a movie when you add in the popcorn, soda and milk duds...never mind the baby sitter...then you could actually help MAKE a movie. And it would go a long way to helping defer the cost of the film. Not everyone on a project like this will work for free. In fact very few. Thank you for thinking about it. |

both blog's are beggin for a space. Anyone anywhere have any "office" space, like on The Office, I would really appreciate your pointing me to your building manager. Thanks. |

How long is the space needed and how big of a crew? I can ask some clients, but would need to give them a few details about timeframe/impact. |

Thanks Dave, I appreciate that. The dates would be like this. Fri Aug. 25th afternoon/evening Load in of gear. Sat and Sun shoot and load out. We would need to be in all day sat and sun. And there is just no way to convince anyone that it isn't going to be intrusive. Shooting on film, is very accessorized. Lights, cables, scrims and people. So give it a try. My fingers are crossed on every front because this is really messing with my head. |

What Broke my Heart and How it was Restored... Yesterday after camp my son and I were talking about what we were going to do until mom came home. Sadly my phone remained mostly quiet as I continue looking for a space to shoot. When the phone did ring it was my wife saying it would be "a late night". Code for you are putting the child to bed. Cool. So my son and I decide to go swimming. We are blessed that our neighbors have an inground pool and a deep love of my little boy which affords us a swimming pool anytime we want to use it. They are special people who greeted us mysteriously the morning after we moved in 10 years ago by putting a large bag of bagles and cream cheese against our door with a note saying "welcome to the neighborhood". These 10 years later they are still wonderful to us. But I digress. So, my son and I head to the pool next door on a sweltering hot evening and get in. It feels so nice, and the smell never fails to take me back to being a kid and swimming in a pool and all the wonders you experience when you first learn that your body can indeed move through water with some grace. Even five year old awkward grace. So we are swimming around and having fun when someone up on the track starts to shout down at us. Mostly we don't pay it much mind because that happens a lot. Things like "Oh man I wish I had a pool." or "hey can I jump in too?" However this time it turned really ugly. The young....males, since they do not deserve any other distinction, decide that it would be funny to throw rocks at us in the pool while yelling "I fu**ing hate white people...it is always the black person's fu**ing problem always our fu**ing fault". My poor son has not heard this kind of shi*t before and it scares him, not to mention the rocks. As this is happening the man of the house who owns the pool comes out on his back porch to say hi to Malcolm (and me) and I tell him there is some trouble behind the pool and what had just happened. So he calls the cops, in a fury I have never seen in 10 years, both his property and his favorite little kid were being targeted. So he comes back out after calling and says they are on their way. Great, but MLB and I are not goin back in until things calm down, cause he is genuinely scared. You don't shiver in 96 degrees. So I get back in to retrieve his kick board when a rock the size of a lemon or possibly a little bigger, comes flying through the trees and, thankfully, crashes into the playground set at the house on the other side of the pool than we are. Thankfully may not be the right word, but no one was playing there and if that had hit me or my son it would have done damage, and if it had hit the side of the pool could easily have torn the lining. So the police show up and my son is sitting in my lap, saying "what is happening? why did that boy say that and throw things at us?" I tell him he is just a jerk and not to pay him any mind. Somehow that sounded hollow and I could tell from my sons reaction he was disappointed that I couldn't better explain it, but how do explain racism no matter how it is displayed to a five year old who doesn't know it, understand it, or ever encounter it? The police officer couldn't have been nicer in doing a better job at explaining than I did, after he took my statement and description of the kids. And my son was amazing, he didn't hide or get wigged out as he sometimes does around police, fireman or what have you. But for some reason he was really cool and told the officer his name, where he lived and what happened. I have to say I was really proud of him right then. Then the officer left and a cruiser drove around up on the field and we were reassured that it was ok to go back in to the water. Which we did and we ended having a really good time. But as we were toweling off to go home and get dinner, I told my son that I was really proud of how well he dealt with the whole police thing and he looked at me and said..."Dad, I am never scared of real heroes" I love that kid. |

The lovely part of that story Duncan was the way you described your son. You are a loving Father and he is obviously a great boy. The sad part is what caused you to write about the event. I just don't understand the HATRED in some people. These individuals - they were saying that it's always the black persons fault? I disagree - it isn't, but if they could look at themselves at exactly that moment they way you were seeing them and they would have seen that YES, this incident WAS their fault. They were the ones holding and throwing the rocks! I will never understand how people regardless or race, religion or other beliefs can justify violence. A man and his son were in a pool bothering no-one and they had rocks thrown at them? So sad. I'm just glad that neither of you were physically hurt, although the memory is obviously painful.

Thanks SOP and SOref. But the thing is, and I didn't make this clear. Is that the yelling about hating whites and its always the black guys fault happened all before the rocks were thrown and well before the police were called or even arrived. Thats what freaked my son out so much, cause we hadn't done anything so he couldn't understand why they were talking to us like that. |

Yes, Duncan, a very freaky and scary situation for your son as well as you. I'd have been freaked too! Sounds like you handled it beautifully, sometimes there is just no logical explanation. Did the cops ever find them? |

Sometimes Duncan, the only explanation you can give to a child is that other people are born angry. That they go through life either with good reaon or without, blaming the whole world for everything that happens to them and that these "young men" are angry at life, and will go through life with that anger and will miss out on all the wonderful oportunities that life has in store for people like your son. Remind him about the Garden of Eden, remind him of how wonderful a place that was, and even such a place as that had snakes... SOP |

Emmie.. thanks. The police didn't find either of the kids because football practice was starting up and the best description I could give was that one of the youngsters was wearing a faded, green, camoflage shirt. I doubt they will find them, but I will be taking my camera over there from now on. SOP.. I talked to my son about it a little more this morning and told him that we choose how we want our day to go. We can wake up and say, before even getting out of bed, THIS IS GONNA BE A GOOD DAY. And then make decisions throughout the day to reinforce that. The strange thing is that I am sympathetic with the kids. I was a really angry teen. I did destructive mean things and regret them deeply. But it is impossible to tell some kid that in 25-30 years you may regret doing this now. However, that sort of acting out, if left unchecked can develop into a really lousy path to adulthood. I was blessed by a woman named Jeannie Goddard, my 10th grade English Teacher. She, unknowingly, knocked me off the really bad track I was on. While I still went off the rails Jeannie Goddard made Shakespeare accessible to me and I found a whole new way to vent those frustrations and ultimately lead me down the road to a life in the theater.

Quote: What makes growing up in America so great? The answer is simple. Cars, guitars, and members of the opposite sex (but not necessarily in that order). While it's interesting to note that all three can share a similar shape, only one can hold the other two, only two are fun to hold, and only playing one really well will get you the other two. So if you want all three, obviously the best place to start is with a guitar. And if your dreams involve little red Corvettes (or even yellow ones) and a romantic drive down the Pacific Coast Highway to Malibu Beach with a California girl, then we have the guitar for you!

Good, that'll be in the documentary I do on him. Sweetwater is not my first choice of online browsing. Elderly.com is where I usually start then wildwestguitars. But I know Paul Allen from Sweetwater and he was bummed I didn't buy it from him. But when I told him the price I got out on 22 he said "I can't really blame you. We couldn't have had it there the same day, if you ever look to expand your collection"...LOLOLOL |

Well. The fortunes of this freaky business. The marble movie falls apart. So to karmically compensate The Vermont International Film Festival accepts THE READER into its 18th Annual Festival making it the first festival to accept all three of my shorts. And then Chicago International Reel Shorts Film Festival goes and accepts BUST the next day. This will be my second film there. And yet....I can't get anyone to back a feature length script that would be made for little and recoup its capital. I am almost positive of it. I know every filmmaker says that, otherwise why would we do it. But this one, I know for sure. |

Duncan, I haven't posted to you since the decline of "Marbles." I'm truely sorry. I feel like a co-writer since I cut and pasted the scenes that one day. I really wanted to see it happen. Maybe it will. I mourned a little recently because the date of the "Marbles" fundraiser was penciled in my datebook. Was it this weekend? Nice to hear about the film festivals, kudos. J.B. |

Thanks JB. That has been one of the most disappointing things yet. I was last ups for a pilot once for an ABC sitcom and didn't get it and this was, in many ways, worse than that. That one there was nothing I could do. This one, THERE WAS NOTHING I COULD DO. I have to believe it happened for a reason, or that I am supposed to do something else first. I have the copyright and it's registered with the WGA so I still can and very well may do it. I never have stopped looking for a space, but it became a matter of crew members dropping out and ultimately my having to let them go. On the other side of that fence, in addition to the other festival news above, I found out this morning that THE READER has been accepted into another festival... The Golden Lion Film Festival in (get this) Manzini Swaziland. Man oh Man I wish I could go. But It is a 33 hour trip each way...for a 10 minute film??? But it makes for more buzz about the company and I have to think that is good.
