I've finally found a reason to start my own molblog. I whipped up this little news item after the help desk finally closed and with lots of assistance from Rian and others:

http://depts.drew.edu/cns/news/20050602-IBM-award.php

What a great overnight package to find on your office chair in the morning. Congratulations and thank you to Rian Spivak: You deserve it most of all!

Congratulations, Miss Bets!

I assume Rian is one of your students? If so, don't you deserve a bit of the credit as well?

Hugs.

Thank you, Liv!

Rian is a full-time Hardware Support Specialist (and an excellent one at that). He's also a student (you're allowed 8 credits per semester) and was essentially an adjunct faculty for a few semesters.

Okay, back to blogging.

I bought my students lunch yesterday with monies from the "I'm so sorry I can't pay you a decent wage for your contribution" slush fund.

Show your appreciation and recognition both up and down the ladder of life. That's what I try to impart.

Liv, call me please?

Ok Bets. Sorry but if you're going to blog I think we need to know a little more background info.
Are you from the area? What do you teach?
Thank you,
Shh

Okay, shh, I'll fess up.

I was born in South Orange in 19xx (some things must remain private). When I was born, we lived on Stanley Road, then moved to Ralston Ave. when I was 5. I attended Marshall School for grades K-6, South Orange Junior High 7-8, Marylawn for 9th and then to CHS.

My first "real" (full time) job was as a typesetter for the Snooze Wrecker. I was promoted after just a few months on the job when I opened my mouth about an article an editor had written about the great Renaissance artist "Michael Angelo". It took a lot of courage, but I convinced them that perhaps they were referring to Michelangelo.

I moved up the ladder at Worrall over the next 5 years and left as Regional Editor for the Oranges/Bloomfield/Glen Ridge. I moved to Colorado for 5 years, where I got into systems administration and first began using Novell.

When I moved back, I took a temp job at Gannett Outdoor (billboards), and was soon hired as a sales assistant then promoted to national sales assistant. That division was sold and more than 50 percent of the staff (myself included) was let go. This was 3 months after my mother died suddenly (I don't know if you've seen the link I posted about her accomplishments: http://blackreunion2005.com/FamilyPics/Archives/pages/Dorothy%20Black%20receives %20Law%20Degree.htm, that's me on the left).

So in dealing with the loss of my mother and the loss of my job, I wound up with a job at a law firm doing systems administration using Novell. My boss was great, but it soon became apparent that she hired me b/c she planned to leave and didn't want to leave the firm without any systems person. She left, they refused to promote me, so I started looking in the paper and sending out resumes.

I was thrilled when I got the call from Drew in 1997, took a $1,000 pay cut to accept the position of administering the student's network file server, but the department I was hired to work in dissolved after the director accepted a job at another university. I ended up in Academic Technology and was charged with running the help desk there. In 1999, a manager position was created, I was promoted to it, and hired 2 full-time support specialists (one for hardware, one for software). In 2002, I was given responsibility for the computer store (2 more full-time staffers) which oversees the Computer Initiative for students, staff, and faculty.

That's about it. The people I've hired over the years have all either stayed in their positions (like Rian) or been promoted to other areas of the university. I was pretty proud of the fact that 3 of my hires were recently honored for their 5-year anniversaries.

I'm a Deadhead from way back (being the youngest in a family of 11 helped with that); I love to read; favorite TV shows include Judge Judy, the Daily Show, Jeopardy, Real Time w/Bill Maher, The Sopranos, Six Feet Under, and Dead Like Me.

I am in the midst of ending a 5-year relationship which has been tremendously stressful and I'm just getting through each day and waking up and going on. I'm seeing a great therapist, my doctor has been wonderful and has assured me he won't fully retire for many years (I've been seeing him for 7 years and love him), and trying to stay busy.

I'm probably going to go down to Bunny's to see my friend Leslie (the owner), have some dinner, and hang out for awhile.

What'd I leave out? Reading through this, it seems my life is pretty unexciting. Oh well, we can't all be Oprah.

So they have always been complete idiots down there, eh bets?

On repeat play in my car, courtesy Blues Traveler:

I pick up my smile put it in my pocket
Hold it for a while try not to have to drop it
Men are not to cry so how am I to stop it
Keep it all inside don't show how much she rocked ya

Ooh can you feel the same
Ooh you gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh I feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
The mountains win again

Dreams we dreamed at night were never meant to come to life
I can't understand the ease she pulled away her hand
This time in my life I was hurt enough to care
I guess from now on I'll be careful what I share

Ooh can you feel the same
Ooh ya gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Yeah feel it comin' in
The mountains win again

A pocket is no place for a smile anyway
Someday I will find love again will blow my mind
Maybe it will be that love that got away from me
Is there a line to write that could make you cry tonight
Can you feel the same
Yeah ya gotta love the pain
Ooh it looks like rain again
Ooh feel it comin' in
The mountains win again
Ooh the mountains win again

Too much what?

Three of us still call the Township of South Orange Village (aka Coming Soonville) Home. Two of us will be heading to the huge family reunion next month (http://blackreunion2005.com/) with various nieces/nephews in tow. Mini-immediate-family reunion plans for July 7 at the Doubletree Canadian side in Niagara Falls. I'll be bunking with 3 nieces (25 (almost-Saturday), 24 almost (August), 23 almost (very early Sept.).

My most secret wish is that my US Marine nephew (who's had a tour in Kuwait and another in Iraq) gets the leave to attend so I can swing by Buffalo, NY, and get him. It's not looking good as he wants to keep under the radar until the papers are SIGNED AND HE IS FREE!!! But it's still my secret wish that I have to figure out where the Buffalo Airport is.

How about you? How many still in town(s)?

Out of eight we have two in Maplewood, two in South Orange, two back in Manhattan and two "down the shore". Parents are in Point Pleasant, still missing Maplewood after living here for 40 years.
We have huge amounts of cousins, etc. all over the country. Mom's brother was a Boeing exec and raised ten kids in Seattle, so we have great reunions out there. I even have a sister in law in Alaska.
Speaking of Alaska - We need a road trip - it's too hot here...

Bets! How cool is that picture! My parents had an attic fire in our house when they lived here and so many photos etc. were lost.

Candles for your nephews...
