Okay, here goes; married, female; 2 year resident of Maplewood (I moved here because it reminds me of my neighborhood as a child in Staten Island); freelance graphic designer.

Trying to start a family (2 near misses, still trying). I paint, read, watch way-too much TV and without kids, am having a hard time finding contacts/friends here in Maplewood. Any suggestions?

(Starting to cruise MOL everyday, it's very addicting.)

Hi LL,

Try the Newcomers Club. When I moved her 16 years ago, it really was a lifeline. Met lots of new couples. Don't know their website but they met the first Wed. of the month at 7:45pm at Morrow Memorial Church.

From one LL to another.

LL, we have a few things in common.

I am also from SI, but loved Maplewood because it was so different from MY neighborhood! I'm from New Springville...are you from one of the older, North Shore areas? Also, I'm a freelance graphic designer too, but my hands are very full with my kids, so I haven't been taking on many projects recently.

Welcome to MOL and to Maplewood.

Welcome LL,

I'd be happy to send you info on the newcomers' club. I'll contact you via privateline. We have over 100 families as members and a huge variety of social activities.

In the meantime, the newcomers' website is:

http://www.newcomersclub.homestead.com

Our general meeting is this coming Wednesday May 1st at 7:45pm at Morrow Memorial Church. Feel free to stop by, say hi, and pick up some info.

Phil

Barleyrooty:
I'll check out the newcomers site and meeting, thank you!

Ssh:
Were you always a freelance designer? Or did you work for a company before the kids? I lived in Bay Terrace on SI, a small town near Gateway Beach. It was very much like Maplewood, including being able to hear the trains pull in and out of the station, although we were a few miles away.

Maybe we should change the site to MOLL (Maplewood Online Ladies)

I pretty much began exclusively freelancing when I was pregnant with my first kid. (Though I did do some freelance work before that too.) I had been working at a small (5 person) design studio in NYC and the owner's deal with maternity leave was 6 weeks, no pay, come back full-time after that. Since the money was not that great, there were no medical benefits, only vacation and sick time, I decided it would be smarter to line up some freelance work before having the baby. I did, at a mid-size ad agency (before the small studio I had worked at a huge ad agency in the city) and managed to work one or two days there after having the baby too. Since then I haven't been working in the city much, but have found work in NJ. Now I'm pretty much on hiatus!
