Mem,
Sorry you're hot! . My brother conveniently stopped by on Sunday to drop off uncollated copies of my mother's journal begun in 1948. He was immediately put into service installing ACs. You're welcome to come visit and drink wine as long as you can put blinders on regarding cleanliness. I'm gaining ground every day, though, and will hopefully have an industrially cleaned home by June 21.

Haven't started reading that journal yet. Scary. Read excerpts. It's going to be powerful. Powerful.

Thanks for my Danny candles. He's through, the "final" paperwork is signed, his out-date is sometime in August. I'm nervous that even mentioning this semi-out loud is going to jinx it, though.

<------- I am knocking on wood.

And I am so sorry your family suffered a fire. My next door neighbors on Stanley Road had a house fire . (Wow. I am starting to understand my reaction to the Ralston Avenue fire!) I'm so sensitive and aware of fire dangers. I never want to endure that. My condolences to your family.

Thanks for relating Bets. It happened about nine years ago. My parents and siblings still at home had to live in a trailer next to the house for two months, so we managed to get many laughs out of that...also, all the cops and firemen that showed up were friends we all grew up with, and they were all so comforting and just as bummed as we were...
The new people in the my parent's house are awesome - they have done really nice work on the house without changing the integrity. But all those photos and collections - gone. :-(

Gack.

That is why I'm trying to get my Dad to meet with us, his kids, so we can go through my Mom's files and other stuff and get it distributed. I'm still scared to read the journal. I'm so glad I get to see my head doctor later this morning.

And how ironic that your family had to live in a trailer for 2 months while their home was repaired, while the South Orange fire heroes have been living in trailers (2) for (I can't believe this but it's true) THREE YEARS now while their Firehouse gets repaired.

WTF??

Have you tried replacing stuff like yearbooks, photos from other relatives, med. records, etc.? I can't even imagine. Like I said, it's my greatest fear.

My head doctor kicked me out a while back! She said we we done and that I'm fine now after working out all the 9/11 stuff.
But I'm drinking apricot brandy from a screw cap bottle. That's not right! That should land me right back in some shrink's office...

Bets - we flinch from even thinking what was lost, so we just gather and keep what we have left.

I know, SO firemen working from trailors - ugh... very wrong. BTW, are you sure you want to move to Maplewood after our fiasco?

And 9 years ago is when my Mom died. What month? Was it really '96? My bad day happened March 27-29, 1996.

It was that summer following. We were glad that the weather was good for "trailor livin".

I am so sorry about your mom Bets. Thank you for reminding me to be grateful about mine and how she managed to raise all of us so well.

Yeah. She was special. I am a very lucky woman in that I moved back here (NJ) from Colorado in the spring of '93 and lived at my parents' home in Highland Lakes for 10 months. My mom and I became best friends forever.

We finally came to our understanding then and enjoyed a friendship that I'll never again match. For once, instead of being last (#11), I was first to her, and she asked for my advice and listened. That 3-year period with my mom is most definitely what's helping me to deal with my current upheaved life.

Thanks, Mom. I love you; you're in me and I promise to always do the right thing.

Hug your Mom & Dad, Mem and all who are lucky enough to have both.

bets - I remember reading about it when your mom died. I'm sure you all miss her a lot. Sounds like you have a big job a head of you going through your mom's things. Maybe you can scan her journal into the computer as you read it. Then make copies of it on CD's for any of your siblings who would like a copy.

BTW -I know how old you are!

Are we still on for Monday night?

mem-

I remember that fire on Stanley Road. I didn't realize it was your family's house. I'm sorry to hear that. My mom drives me crazy because she leaves candles buring all the time. Even goes to bed with them lit!

About 5 years ago my friend lost almost everything she owned in a fire -she lived in the apartment building on South Orange Ave. That caught fire a few months after the Seton Hall fire. Five years later, she now finds something positive from the experience.

If the fire hadn't occured, she wouldn't have moved to Mendham. She moved into an old rooming house converted into a four unit apartment building. There was a single guy living across the hall from her. I joked 'watch you'll end up marrying him!' Her response was 'He's involved with someone and I'm not interested in him'

Long story short, they're getting married in two weeks!

If you're still suffereing from the heat, you're welcome to come over here! You'll have to agree to play the kids in chess though! LOL

Aunt,
Our house was on Summit by the Evan's...but I do remember the fire you're speaking of. The next year the house next door to ours caught and the whole block got worried - both fires were from old wiring...

The Stanley Road house fire (this must have been '69 or '70) was next door to my house at the time (no pictures, unfortunately).

I remember that apartment house fire on SO Ave. 5 years ago. It took PSE&G like 5-6 hours to get the gas main shut off which is why it was as devastating as it was.

JTA, I'm still on for Monday. Are we doing pre-dinner? We'll eat light in case the meeting makes us sick!

Night 3 at Bunny's, having a cold one and ordering a pizza pie. I'm hoping to achieve a personal best record of 4 nights in a row tomorrow, but we'll see.

LazyDog,

Sigh (again!). In "real" English, "night" means the period of time between sundown and sunrise.

"Knight" is a term applied to Monty Python actors without hourses. Very colourful, don't you knouw.

This one may be on the test, so I'd note it accordingly.
