OK, due to popular (and cute) request, here is my new construction blog. We are adding a second bathroom and redoing the office in our hose to make it a baby's room. The original space was an enclosed porch that was made into a room. It had paneling on the walls that was painted yellow, electrical outlets, radiators, and that's it. (Please note that my 'bear' of a desk is sitting in the room now as well) We are putting a closet in that room, it's all framed out and the molding is done, as well as the door. The new bathroom was formerly a huge walk in closet. I think the room could have been a 'nanny's' room when it was originally built. We are also building out the closet that was once mine to share.

Pictures to follow as soon as I learn how to put them up here. This is a work in progress so feel free to make suggestions in the baby's room. The bathroom and closet in the master bedroom are taken care of and in progress.

Jay - would love to see your master bedroom work - we are planning a master suite soon and are looking for good ideas...

(not that the baby room isn't intriguing, just don't have a need for that yet!)

I would love to show you the work in progress, but I don't know how to get the pictures posted here. If you do, clue me in. I've even got a few before pictures, so I can start this whole thing off right.

Jay, when you post there's a box that says "upload attachment" or something like that. Give it a nickname like beforepic1, locate your jpeg on your hard drive and click on it. If it's too big it won't upload. I think they need to be max. 800 pixels wide, but 650 seems better to me. I use photoshop to resize.

I really like irfanview for cropping and resizing pictures. It's free at http://www.irfanview.com. I set it to be the default program for pictures on my computer.

It's very fast, because it's small.

OK, now I have no idea what I'm doing. How do I set this program as my default so I don't have to resize pictures in the future (maybe I'll just talk to you offline on Monday?)....

Back to our regularly scheduled thread....

Pull down "Options" and then choose "set file associations"

Play with it, man. It won't explode.

Tom, do you have other links for freeware (is that what it's called?). I'm on a mac and have no office connections anymore...

Sure, there's tons of good freeware out there, and that is the term. What do you need?

For example, and speaking of "office" connections, did you know that OpenOffice is a complete replacement for Word, Excel, Powerpoint, and more? http://www.openoffice.org/

Yay! You ROCK Tom! These are two pictures of what we have done so far. We sheet rocked over the yellow paneling and built a closet. It's a bit further along than this, but I have not taken a picture of it yet. (Note that confounded desk covered in one of the shots)

Pretty room - great windows and floors. You'll definitely want to be putting up black-out shades and putting down some type of rug. If you happen to have the sort of baby (like my first) who will be zonked out when you lay him in the crib, but awaken at the slightest creak of a floor board, you definitely will need a rug. We found decent, inexpensive area rugs at both Ikea and Home Depot. Inexpensive is nice because then you don't feel too bad when they blurp up on it.

Would also make sure that the door doesn't creak, click, squeak, etc. Many times I got out of the room, only to be called back in when the door clicked shut.

I of course wish for you a baby who sleeps, well, "like a baby" but it's good to be prepared. Good luck!!!

Gone lone ago, my friend. You won't recognize that room when we are through with it. I forgot to add the picture of what our new bathroom looked like before, it was a walk in closet with these tacky mirored doors. We took the mirrors off and were using it for my wife's walk in closet. There was also this 'dresser' in there, that I ripped out with a hammer by myself before we even moved in. This is what that room looked like before......

Hey Jay (and anyone else who is interested),

I have a ton of baby stuff that I'm looking to unload. I know with a first baby you like to get everything all shiny and new, but let me know if you're interested and I'll send you a list of things I have and don't need anymore. Anything that was a gift or passed on to me I will be happy to give away. Stuff we paid for ourselves I'd probably ask a minimal price.

I so am! I am going on eBay to look for a matching stool, Shalimar, and Aqua Net hairspray for Mrs. Jay.

Do you need Hi Karate, or was it stockpiled in the basement?

Funny you should mention that, we thought the couple who owned the house previous to us had tastes straight out of the 70s! They had floor to ceiling mirrors in the back of the livingroom, which is a huge room to begin with. Then they had one of those chrome bally lamps in there as well. Upstairs, the doors on the closet where that vanity you so covet was, were two mirrors as well. Then the linen closet in the hallway had mirrors on them as well. All the light switches were that bronze yellow color. Some of that 'flavor' is still in the 1/2 bath.

The wife might not be too keen on the Shalamar, but you can send me the High Karte any time. I know that's what you ladies like

OK, so the closets are done, the trim and molding is up, crown molding replicated. I have to get it all painted soon, I'm thinking by end of month. We have some ideas for the baby's room, but I need to go pick out swatches - anyone have a good paint store to recommend? I'll have more pictures next week, when the camera comes back from Europe.

So great meeting VIG, Pipi and SW last night at Classic Design Framing! You all exceeded my expectaions, very cool. Hey VIG, wanna come with?

Hey Jay, you too.

I have been happy with Behr paint from HD but look at swatches from Restoration Hardware, Benjamin Moore, MArtha Stewart/Sherwin Williams for inspiration.

In addition, Riccardi's on Springfield Avenue near the intersection with Prospect carries Benjamin Moore and other "name brand" paints.

Every time I say we have been happy with Behr paint from Home Depot I get yelled at by the Benjamin Moore fanatics.

I think HD has a better selection for paint, but Riccardi's is just plain easier, and better service.

Nice to meet you, too, Pippi, VIG, and Jay. Little Witty was tired, though, so we scooted to get her to bed. She's in B-ball camp this week and gets exhausted. At least we made it. Jay, soon as we got to the ice cream place she forgot all about her "limp!"

what color are you thinking of painting the baby's room? (I have some experience with yellows, which is a very tricky color)

Consumer Reports just gave Behr paints a pretty high rating (but I think it was their indoor glossy). BM wasn't mentioned.

Don't overlook the Sherwin Williams paint store on Springfield Ave. -- it's a couple of blocks east of Ricciardi's, on the opposite side of the street. It is big and bright and the people are pretty helpful (that morning guy at Ricciardi's just makes it up as he goes along -- he affirmatively told my painter that BM "does not make" green blackboard paint. Duh! It's on their website, dude! They ordered it)

We were thinking lime green. My wife saw a wall in a Pottery Barn Kids catalogue with a strip thing going on. I'm gonna go over there later, it's before Vaux Hall on the other side, right? We'll probably stick with Benjamin Moore, but we'll see. I'm still waiting for my painter to get back to me, he's a bit flaky. I'm actually looking for a good local guy, know anyone?

A big plus for the SW store on SA: they can match absolutley any color you bring them and the paint comes in cool plastic cans with handles and screw-top lids. Makes it sooo much easier to clean up, pour or grab the paint can and do touch-ups.

They are indeed very helpful and nice. That's the only place we go anymore.

So many colors, so little time. I picked up tons of swatches yesterday from both SW and Ricardi, let's see if my wife has the same taste as me. I'm liking the lime green colors for the baby's room, maybe even one that's called 'Bannana Yellow'. And for the bathroom, I like the blues with water theme names. Get it? Water? Bathroom? Good, I thought so. It's wild how they name these colors, make them all so exotic. I'll have new pictures up shortly. Unfortunately, you'll have to go with a number and color name untill they are actually up, so don't get too excited.
