I know it is against the rules for one MOLer to start a blog about another member but I am hoping Dave and Jamie will make an exception in this case since Augie is no longer able to start one himself.

So many of us miss Augie so deeply that I think it would be helpful for all of us to have this single blog on which to post rememerberances, messages, photes, works by Augie we may have lying around, etc.

Your heart is blessed with love, I know Augie's will be remembered the same. I hope to be at the family memorial service next Thursday.

You are a dearheart, Joan, and I'm confident the Rosses will let this blog be. I don't know the Schroeders, but my eyes tear up and my throat closes up anyway.

This blog is supposed to be about Augie. I'll start by including the entry I placed in Augie's virtual guestbook:. This entry was addressed to Augie's parents but applies equally to all of us who knew him:

You must be so proud of how much love and compassion Augie gave and inspired during his brief life. At yesterday's rememberance service, speaker after speaker spoke of Augie's love, compassion, caring, and use of humor to bring people closer together. His pride in being able to save a life through CPR and his dedication to friends, family and community featured greatly in the testiment given by speaker after speaker.

He will surely be missed by a great many of us here in Maplewood and South Orange.

On behalf of Bernie, Joe and myself I want to extend my deepest condolences to you both.

Augie stayed with us the summer when his parents moved to Ohio. He wanted to continue his job as a lifeguard at the SO Pool and his volunteer work as an EMT with the rescue squad in West Orange before he started his freshman year at Ohio State.

We have a dog - a lab - who adored Augie. Bailey always sleeps in our room, but that summer, he chose Augie. He would wait patiently on the stair landing, waiting for him to get home. I'd have to coax him upstairs on those nights Augie stayed with the squad. It took a couple of weeks after Augie left for college for Bailey to understand that he wasn't coming back.

They say dogs have a second sense in knowing a good person... Bailey chose Augie as a friend from the moment he walked through our door.

Members of the Old Guard at Glen Grey (the camp where Augie used to work) are looking into the possibility of rehabing an old cabin at the camp in Augie's memory. Once they have a plan drawn up, they will need help with donation of materials and willing hands to help with the rehab work.

Anyone interested can contact me and will forward the information to the organizers. There is a special need for someone with knowledge of building log cabins.

Thanks.

I will also post this information in Please Help.

Those who would like to see a photo/musical Tribute to Augie can go to http://www.bobstewartband.com/mm/augie/

Its background music is "A Million Miles Away From Home," written and recorded by Robert Stewart, in honor of the 20 Ohio Marines killed the first week of August 2005.

A beautiful tribute. A great chance for people to see the Augie that we knew...not just another soldier....
Thanks for posting, Edufacts.

A few updates:

The third grade girls' girl scout troop from Clinton School dedicated their march in today's Memorial Day Parade to Augie.

Augie's name was mentioned during the roll call at today's Memorial Day ceremony at Town Hall.

The above mentioned memorial to Augie at Camp Glen Grey, where he worked as as a counselor, has been fully funded and all the necessary labor needed to complete the project has been committed. I will try and post the final details as soon as the project is completed.

To Joan and all who worked so hard to make Maplewood's Memorial Day Observance what it was, a hearty thank you for a job well done.
Am glad that Augie was remembered by so many. A bittersweet day for everyone.

Exactly one year ago today (8/15), Augie's casket was buried in Cleveland, OH. Because he had been in a horrific explosion, the family also received two urns of cremains, and one of them is buried in the Memorial Garden at Morrow Memorial Church in Maplewood.

When Ohio folksinger Bob Stewart learned of that this summer, he wrote a second memorial song, this one specifically for Augie. Bob calls it a "folk dirge."
Anyone interested can hear it and read the words at:
