Hey Tom, you have the same problem growing a beard that I do - it makes you look like a rabbi. Can we call you Rabbi instead of Ganesh? Hmmmmmm.....

I think he looks pretty iffy, and couldn't get on a plane today. :-)

Tom, that's a great story. Every kid should do something like that - I never did anything like that and regret it. Your dad is a very wise man.

Hey, just noticed your new picture on another thread. Very nice. So much more attractive than that other one. But I still really like the baby picture, because it's cute and you still kind of look like that. And by that I mean you are one of those people (as am I) who look very much the same as they did when they were small. Then there are people who you could never pick out of a line-up when they were small because their appearance changed quite a bit.

Tom, I think that passport picture should be your MOL icon!

I type really fast too... I go through phases of being on and off MOL. Sometimes I post a lot, and sometimes I'm absent for months. Trust me, I'm sure no one notices. But a post here and a post there and a postpost everywhere does not usually affect my work.

Conratulations on your hefty number of postage.

In one of your "away" periods, that was my MOL icon, shortly after I posted it here. But there's an unfortunate bug in the MOL software which replaces all icons with the icon-du-jour, so there's no graphical history in a person's old posts.

Here's a picture of me in 4th grade, taken in late 1969 or early 1970, the height of the hippy era. I guess the love beads complete the image!

Hippy Tom

Hey, thanks! That was nice of you. I turned 45 yesterday. It started out as a rotten day but ended up nice. We had dinner at our friends' house, who are also our neighbors, three houses up the street. I'm very grateful to have them as friends. Both daughters forgot it was my birthday, but then one of the remembered after she got to school, without any prompting, so that was nice.

Hey, another Happy Belated Birthday Tom!

Birthday Horoscope

If today is your birthday - name babies! Think of baby names and what life the bearer is likely to have as predetermined by their name. This will make you feel like god, or a parent, though feeling like god is way more fun. This year shop whenever you can. You'll boost your wardrobe and become the poor but cool funky sophisticate you always dreamed you'd be.

Happy Birthday Tom! Looks like we are "contemporaries." Love that fourth grade picture--what a cutie pie.

However, the new avatar--not my favorite. The previous one was the best so far. Much hotter!

(Not the you asked, of course)

Tom, I think the Dec 30th picture would make a great avatar for you....after you get tired of your current one.

Groovy!

On Saturday, I went to my high school to attend a memorial service for a teacher who died. She was a voice teacher who was also assistant principal in charge of vocal music. I went to High School of Music and Art in Harlem and graduated in 1978. The school has merged with High School of Performing Arts and moved into a new building in 1984 and is now called LaGuardia High School.

There was a lot of music at the service, of course. It was wonderful. There was and is a lot of gospel music at that school. The gospel choir sang a part of the Mozart Requiem, a spiritual and a gospel number. Graduates sang some solos. Every so often, music makes me cry. This went further. It made me sob.

My teacher was a wonderful and dignified woman who never spoke ill of anyone. She only encouraged people, no matter how hopeless things seemed.

After the service, we had a mini reunion in the lobby. There were several people from my graduating class and also from 1979. I hadn't seen some of these since 1978. I was glad I was able to recognize them after all those years.

One of my classmates is Dawnn Lewis who is now a TV star. We recalled that she and I once had a duet in a play in high school. Is this my brush with fame?

Another is doing all sorts of varied music.

Another is touring around, singing opera.

Meeting them reminded me of how New Yorkers have a certain edge to them that most others don't have. I feel mixed: I am glad not to live there now, and I also miss it.
