"I'm back. Now what?" Hello, Cato nova. I've decided to return to MOL, only with a blog. What do you think of my idea? You may wonder: "What made Soda decide to announce his intentions to me?" I'll tell you. I have become a frequent MOLlurker, and I admire your spirit, especially as expressed through your blog, and although the Oracle always advised me against becoming either spirit-driven or spirit-deprived, I thought: "since Cato nova's clearly had such a positive experience as a blogger, with his blog and all...", that I ought to consult with you about my idea for a, youknow, a blog (Wow. I said "blog".) of my own. So, this is my blogging idea. What do you think? Would I be a good bloggist? Please don't respond yet. I wouldn't want to begin our newly-minted relationship ("Blogosphere-hardened Mentor" & "Neophyte Blogerino") by asking something so crass as an honest opinion of you. After all, you don't even know me, do you? So how about this: Wait a while before responding... say... until my blog is as long as yours is (that'd be today, right?), and then, let me have it. Right between the eyes. I must improve my bloggery, so I want honest feedback to respond to, and I'd be quite honored if you would supply that first set of notes... Anyway, I'll see you on the Blog. --s |

Well, it's now about a week shy of a month since my last/first blog entry, and I don't mind telling you that I've had some pretty interesting feedback to ponder since then, from a bunch of (mostly) friendly MOLers who took the trouble to PL me. Over the past few weeks, I've had some problems trying to decide what this blog should be about, but I've decided to take the advice of two particular MOLers whom I've come to trust and admire, and here's what I've come up with: My blog will be about MOL, and the two communities upon which it focuses. Radical, eh? Yes, it'll be my take on the above subjects, but it won't be about me, for two reasons: A) A few of the PL's I've received so far have not been so nice... in fact they've been pretty unkind, repleat with the kind of nasty name-calling and hostile innuendo that I grew so tired of before my departure from the board a few months ago, and 2) My life isn't nearly interesting enough to make me wanna sit down and come up with spicy periodic "sharings" from my latest joys and trevails. But our two towns are interesting. MOL is interesting. At least to me. And I assume to you, too, so I'll only comment on stuff that happens here online, or out there in the local brick & mortar world. I hope that'll be acceptable to everyone. If not, don't read my blog. Your choice... Now to respond to a couple of queries and suggestions from your PL's: Yes, I'm going to include occasional wavs & graphics when it suits me, and Yes, I do prefer PL's (nice or not) as your way to communicate to me, so please do that (instead of posting on the blog) if you wanna say something to me... I may post your message, though, so think before you write...and No, I won't be posting anyplace else on MOL, thanks to an arrangement I've agreed to with The Oracle. The deal is, he gets to ignore me entirely most of the time, and I still get to take my contractually-guaranteed R&R down at his place in Boca twice a year... So look for my next blog entry sometime soon, folks. I dunno when, but here's a little someting to tide you over: Have Dave & Jamie really stopped selling MOL Gear? Why? Now I won't be able to get this great hat: Please, Dave! Bring back your MOL store! TTFN. -s. |

Merci, Jami. -s. BTW: Could you answer a technical question for me? I've recently started to wonder how my graphical efforts -- for example -- look when displayed on the monitors of others. Reason: A family member recently postulated that the age of my own monitor (10 yrs+/-), along with some past "image burning" of its CRT, have combined to make images seen on my monitor both dimmer and darker than they'd have looked when it was new -- or, in fact, as they'll look today on anybody else's newer monitor. Gasp. Jamie, doesn't that mean that whenever I use editing software (in my case Paint Shop Pro) to create a graphic using this old monitor (which is already spiked up as bright as I can make it), I'm also skewing some key brightness, color saturation, sharpness, and other influential settings (to make it look good on MY monitor) which will result in its looking different on (for instance) your computer? Doesn't this mean that what I think I'm posting on MOL really looks very different (read: not optimal) to everybody else? Ulp. Please tell me how (aside from buying a new monitor, which, I guess, will anyway probably make all the graphics & other pix I've already created look wierd...) to solve this dilemma. Thanks Jamie. I'd normally ask The Oracle about stuff like this, but you're so much more approachable... TTFN. -s. |

Soda, quick answer is yes! It's time for you to get a new monitor. My hat pic and the Fred & Vic pic are a bit overexposed. How do graphics look on websites? Are they dark there as well? |

A new monitor will fix dis?http://www.overstock.com/cgi-bin/d2.cgi?SEC_IID=13496&PAGE=staticpage&page_id=24 40# ...hmmmm... about my graphics since 1995... I'd better not throw this monitor out... I'm gonna consult with The Oracle at this juncture... It's a space/time thingie, and he's a whiz at those. Jamie-do you object to your photo appearing on MOL? (just asking...) |

Feel free to post my pic. It would be hard to adjust your pic - because I don't know what it should look like. I suggest you log on to another machine elsewhere and surf around to see the difference. Getting a new monitor would be the easiest fix. |

I can see how acquiring another monitor will solve my visual communications issues with everybody else, but my "legacy" pics, made using my current screen, will then all look wierd, yes? Along those lines, The Oracle wanted to know (imagine him not knowing something...) if monitors these days are so tweakable that I could actually make setting adjustments to a new one which would make its display look like my old one, so that I could still enjoy my old material. BTW, Jamie, I'm noting a distinct trend in your responses: "Live for the living, Soda. Move on with your life, and enter the new milennium with new imagery..." While that would be so unlike me, it may be the only legit course... Meanwhile, though, can I get a rousing MOL ovation for... Jamie Ross!!!

Today is December 21st, the first day of Winter! Happy Birthday to former Austrian president, former U.N. Secretary-General, and Maplewood resident Kurt Waldheim! Kurt is 87 today! Born in 1918, he entered diplomatic service after World War II, serving in France and Canada. When Austria entered the United Nations in 1958, Kurt was a member of its delegation, and became Austria's permanent representative to the United Nations for three years, later serving for two more years as Austria's foreign minister. He lost a 1971 election for the presidency of Austria but in December of that year was elected to a five-year term as UN Secretary-General. Kurt tried with little success to end the Iran-Iraq war and the China-Vietnam war, and to gain the release of American hostages in Iran. In 1976, thanks to endorsements from Art Christenson and Marie Stratechuk, he was reelected (despite some opposition from Third World countries and Jerry Ryan), but was blocked from a third term by a Chinese veto in 1981. He was succeeded as Secretary-General by Boutros Boutros-Ghali, and moved to Maplewood, NJ, vowing revenge. In 1986 Kurt was elected president of Austria, despite the scandal caused by his ex-patriot status and the revelation that he had been an officer in a German army unit that committed atrocities in Yugoslavia during World War II; he denied any knowledge of the atrocities, and an international investigation cleared him of complicity, although of his Winthrop Terrace neighbors felt he must have known more than he revealed. His tenure as President was marked by international isolation, and he did not run in 1992, citing a desire to spend more time with his 25-year old wife Tracy and his two pugs, Max and Doris. Today he leads a quiet suburban life, reading, walking and hunting in The Reservation, and continuing his lifelong enjoyment and support of Salsa music. Here's a recent candid of Kurt, relaxing at one of his favorite venues, enjoying Willie Bobo and his Salsa-Rackasackee Review:
Enjoy your day, Kurt! TTFN -s. |

Today is the 60th birthday of South Orange resident Diane Sawyer!
WOW! Whatta NewsPerson! Armed with a B.A. from Wellesley, Diane (real first name: Lila) began her journalistic career in 1967 as a weather reporter on WLKY-TV in Louisville, Kentucky. In 1970, she took a job at the Nixon White House on the truth-starved staff of Presidential Press Secretary Ron Ziegler, and became a press aide during the corrupt Nixon administration until 1974. Then Diane assisted the self-exiled former president with the preparation of his "memoirs". Diane's quantum leap into semi-legitimate broadcast journalism was made in 1978, when she joined CBS News as a reporter in the Washington bureau, and she hasn't stopped for a moment. Her sunny disposition and commanding delivery have helped edge CBS & ABC news programs closer to their rivals in the Nielsen ratings, and in the fall of 1994, Diane signed a $7 million contract and became one of the highest paid women in broadcast news. A wonderful aspect of Diane's work is her uncanny ability to move between two journalistic styles -- the tabloid and the "legitimate". Diane freely mixes diligent reporting pieces with fluffy celebrity interviews, as in her "hard" coverage of the Iranian hostage crises and her "must-see" interview with Michael Jackson and Lisa Marie Presley. Her goofy "softball" questions to Tonya Harding during the 1992 Olympics, her low-camp interview with Marla Maples (Brilliant! Imagine: asking whether Donald Trump was "really the best sex" she ever had!), and her brief, heavily promoted and news-free encounter with Boris Yeltsin in the Kremlin during the 1987 coup contribute to that wacky "tabloid" side of Diane we all love so much. And did you know that she's been married to hunky funnyman/movie director Mike Nichols since April of 1988? Yup. Prior to moving to South Orange, they lived in a huge, terrific coop on Fifth Avenue. You know the one, where the red-tailed hawk "Pale Male" and his family tried to take up residence, but were shooed away, deprived of their nest, and generally harrasses... That Diane! What a card! She was instrumental in getting the birdies thrown off the premises, and only relented when hubby Mike threatened to do the same to her. Then the coop board decided to show 'em BOTH the door, and so... somewhere (I daren't say exacly!) here in our little Village resides the FABULOUS "Ice Queen" herself! Happy 60th Birthday, you leading-edge Boomerette!!! And BTW, when you and Baba Wawa retire, guess who's waiting in the wings to pick up your distinguished mantle:

It's Christmas Eve! I LOVE Christmas! Of course, since we're Jews, we're gonna celebrate tonight by watching "It's a Wonderful Life", and the "Christmas Story" Marathon, and tomorrow by hitting the Multiplex for two or three flicks, followed by Chinese Turkey or other savory holiday fare, followed by lighting our Menorah for the first night of the Festival of Lights. Dreidels! Gelt! Yahoo! So... Peace on Earth, Good Will to All, and Get out your Harmonica, it's time to celebrate... you know... TTFN. -s. |

Once when I was a little kid, my mother took me to see Dr. Oliver, our family physician (Sam: he smoked cigars in his office, made house-calls, had slicked-back pommaded hair, a sleazy narrow mustache, and sounded like Joe Franklin. A true role model...), and after examining me, he announced that one of my testicles had still not descended into my scrotal sac. While this was of no particular consequence to me, it seemed to upset my mother quite a bit. The situation did eventually resolve itself a couple of years later, although when the other testicle finally showed itself, it was located directly behind its partner. My mom was greatly relieved, and so far as I've been able to determine, the second testicle's somewhat unorthodox location has in no way impacted its intended functionality, if you get my drift. Now, one day when I was fifteen, my dad & I were out in the back yard chopping down (yes, with axes... don't ask.) a mimosa tree that evidently offended my mother's arborial vision for the property. You should know that mimosa wood is extremely hard, and therefor we'd worked up quite a sweat. I suddenly noticed that my scrotum had become rather distended, and also felt quite hot. (This condition had actually occured several times before during my boyhood, so I wasn't too concerned. I figured that, like those previous times, I'd simply drunk too much ginger ale at lunch, and that a good piss would solve the problem....) A bit later that afternoon, when I realized that I was still swollen, I uneasily mentioned it to Dad, who made me show him what I meant. He whisked me off to see Dr. Sam, who took one look at me, immediately phoned a surgeon colleague of his, and dispatched my dad & me to see him at his office right away. The surgeon, Dr. Levine, checked me out and, on the spot, booked an operating room at St. Joseph's Hospital for me, that afternoon. So: within four hours, I underwent emergency surgery to correct an incarcerated left inguinal hernia -- a congenital defect which, if left untreated, could quite possibly have killed me that very day... I mention this all in passing because it's New Years Eve, and there are a couple of things I'd like to say: A) Don't drink too much (especially Mimosas) before fooling around with an axe. It could kill you...And 2) Tonight, when you're waiting for that ball to drop, keep calm. Don't get too crazy. The New Year will show up no matter what you do...And C) Whenever anybody asks me "How are they hangin'?", I truthfully respond, "one behind the other, for speed"... HAPPY 2006, ALL. TTFN. -s. |

I am sooooo bummed! Last night I received a PL from The Oracle, curtly informing me that since I've breached the stupid agreement I made with him when I started this blog (the one where I promised not to post on the regular threads, so that he could completely ignore me), he's now contractually free to deny me my free annual R&R at his Boca digs. And that's not all: Even if I pay my own way down to Florida and spring for my own vacation lodgings there, he says he'll no longer introduce me as a "non-professional" to unsuspecting marks at his local shuffleboard courts! So there goes that little moneymaker! Grrrrrrrrrrr! Well, I am so totally pissed right now, I don't even want to continue with this blog. I hate to admit this, but Mayor McCheese is almost right: The Oracle of MOL (while not actually a person really, but, to quote the old prick, "a semi-retired supernatural entity on a fixed income") is a very bitter fellow. Why did he have to do this to me now, right in the middle of High Season? Hey, so I posted a couple times in the regular threads. Big deal. I forgot. So issue me a warning... But NO! He's gotta drop the ol' hammer on me, in spite of all my years of complete loyalty and subservience. Well, I can play hardball, too... I'm gonna drop this dumb blog entirely, and register for that other hot blog-dealie that Jamie's just opened up. And I'm not gonna let The Orifice of MOL even make comments there. So, if you wanna see my all-new, really spiffy, Oracle-free blog, it's coming soon to that other place on MOL, if I can find it... Signing off. Over & out. The End. Buh-Bye! -s. |

You're right, AntoninaKC! Here's the lowdown on that: Actually, Scarlett is only technically a resident of South Orange, since she was merely renting a house here, while shooting the New Jersey scenes of "Lost In Translation" with Bill Murray. Happy to help! -s. BTW: An interesting sidelight of Scarlett's three-week stay here: the house that she rented is the same home where Benito Mussolini (a distant relative of our own "Duce", Bill Calabrese) grew up. That's right! He was born here in quaint old South Orange in 1892, and lived in that charming old house (just a block off Valley Street!) all through his childhood and teen years, until he moved to Milan, italy in 1911 and founded his Fascist political movement. You can look it up!

Well, you just can't make this stuff up: When he came off Active Duty and relo'd down to Boca, my soothless old ex-boss somehow forgot to update his insurance coverages. And now that he's been called back Up, guess who's once again enjoying the Oracle's Life and P&C coverages! Yup, I'm back on the books at both Incorporeal Life and Cosmic Accident. So I've got that going for me... Oh, and I got a message from him the other day, too, but frankly, I was just so juiced that he's gone for a while that it didn't even bother me. Here 'tis: "Having faithfully dischaged the odious PR tasks which, in your bimbosis, you have (so typically) thrust upon Me in recent days, I now happily take extended leave of that spectacle of filth and squalor that is earthly mortal existence, most particularly the special brands of wretched ignorance, sloth, hypocracy, and depravity centered in your benighted little SOMA community. I now charge you -- as repayment for My decades of kindly, father-like patronage -- to become chronicler, on (yes, that most undemocratic of message boards) MOL, of My deeds and adventures Back In The Biz. This shall be your small way of finally regaining My trust and good will, and I exhort you to be dutiful, else the Celestial umbrella of My protection might close upon you (and, of course, your family) of a sudden, leaving you without external recourse should a tragic accident befall you, or should you hang youself in some jail cell, or perchance be struck by a bolt of lightning... You will be sent periodic dispatches, and I require that their tidings be available in the Ether within hours of their arrival. Consider your previously- rescinded Boca House Priviledges reinstated, so long as you do as I've bid you. Fare you well. I shall keep watch. Go in peace, Soda. From beyond the stars, I remain, --The Oracle of MOL" ...So I guess I'll be keeping you Blogophiles up on whatever the hell it is that he's doing Out There. TTFN. -s. |

Hey! I got a new flat-screen monitor! A 19" Samsung, to replace my ancient Dell CRT which has been slowly dimming for over a year now. So now a couple of of my graphics nightmares have come true: (A) Due to the great brightness on the Samsung, most of the stuff I've created over the last couple of years now looks all washed out, just like Jamie, et al said it would, and (2) because of the size of this monitor, my old 800X600 resolution pics look all pixelated when stretched to fit the optimal viewing size on the new unit. But I don't care. It's terrific. Oh, and the latest dispatch from the Oracle of MOL is that he's got the Great Gig in The Sky: he's been posted to the Outer Reaches somewhere, way beyond Earth's normal gravitational boundaries. His new assignment (for some indeterminate period to come) is to monitor and attempt to somehow normalize a nasty glitch in the flux of something called the Bow Shock in the Solar Wind, which has evidently been screwing up the Aurora Borealis something awful lately. I'm supposed to get a look at how he's doing next week when I head up to Alaska to watch those glaciers (you know, the ones that have been giving Al Gore fits) falling into the sea. I'm cruising! On a ship! It's a first. I'll tell you all about it when I get back. TTFN. -s. BTW: Here's a diagram the Old Guy sent me to explain where he is:

Greetings from Alaska. Nice place, but guess what? No Northern Lights up here in June, due to the nearly 24/7 daylight. I wonder if maybe I oughta alert The Oracle that he's been sent on a fool's errand. Nah, he probably knows by now... or maybe the timing was specifically meant to coincide with the "off-season", so that whatever tweaking he's doing out there will be invisible to us mortals come fall... Anyhow, I'm here in the capital city of our largest state (Didju know it was named after a guy named Joe?), having come here by way of Anchorage, Glacier Bay, and Skagway. Next come Sitka and Ketchikan, and then on to Vancouver, B.C. for my flight back to NJ. Lotsa space here, and eagles, and bears, and whales, and orcas, and otters, and glaciers, and mountain sheep, and fog, and cruise ships, and snow (!), and more space, and fjords, and dogsleds, and bush pilots, and a passable local brew called "Alaska Amber", and king crabs, and salmon, but not a lot of actual Alaskans. Lotsa college students from places like Boise State doing summer gigs, and tubby old fogeys and active adventure-seeking couples & families from the Lower 48, and other touristas from just about everywhere else on the planet, but real Alaskans? Welcome home, Soda! First photo: Is that a ship behind the library and a bus in front of the ship? I can't gain a sense of perspective. Why would they build a library at the shipyard? Are tourists allowed to sign out books in Alaska? If so, how do they return them? (I hope you don't mind my asking q's about Library Lady's photo) |

A shipyard is where they pull boats and ships out of the water for upkeep and repairs. Looks to me like the ship is birthed, which would suggest that the building is close to the docks. I heard that Alaska has one of the highest murder rates per capita. See any action while you were there? |

Las & Shanabana: Yup, that's a Holland-America ship birthed in Juneau. Tour busses (Gray Line & lotsa others, many dedicated to shlepping cruise passengers to whatever land-based attractions or retail therapies are offered) jam the streets of every big & little tourist town in Alaska during the season, which will go on till October. Dunno if borrowing priviledges are extended to outsiders, but I'd say that if you play your cards right, an Alaska vacation should keep you so busy and leave you so weary that reading a book may never enter your mind there. So far as I could see, the human death toll up there is nothing compared to the rate at which (man-made) global warming is killing the glaciers. I offer a pretty picture for you to consider:
I'm told that just twenty years ago, this glacier was twice the width you see today... But for the time being, it's still an amazing and beautiful place to visit. -s. |

Wow, I am honoured Soda. Don't know if you could of checked out books in Juneau but last year, at least, the Alaskan libraries were were offering the same themed Teen and kid summer reading program as we were. The glacier photo is magnificant, but having seen The Inconvenient Truth while you were away, I wonder if there will be anythng there at all for my kid to see on her grand cruise in the future! |

To Reconfirm Rebecca Raines' comment that Alaska is beautiful in the summer, here are a couple more shots from my recent trip:
