I woke up this morning to find that not only was I the eyes of the world, but I was also late for work. It is Friday, so I am not too worried. Ween! Scope the lobe! Yas! I have not seen then live in a long time. They really were amazing. I needed to get my rock on and blow the carbon out of my engines. I had work to do down in AC, so I was able to pull it off. While I often think that AC is a bit...strange, I try to embrace the strange and over look the people hooked up to oxygen and slot machines. It is easier to do at the Borgata. They fill in the cracks with fancy soaps and blown glass fixtures. I remember when the first ween album came out I thought they were pretty good. The second one, I knew they were mad genius song writers. The Stallion pt3 is one of my favorite tunes. I remember hearing that for the first time and thinking, "yes,,,YES". I have a tip for anyone going to a show at the house of blues in atlantic city: go five hours before the show. The security going in there was of pentagon proportions. Sound was nice. It wasn't a "this amp goes to 11" fest - one was able to hear all the instruments. Which I find is rare these days. Usually it is a full on guitar sandwich. If you happen to be at bunnies between 4-5 today, I will buy you one $1 beer. That's it. The password is, "grid". Let's hope for a fast lane Friday, one can only dream.

This picture is from DeForest's stand up act at the sands. He was doing his "10 words you can't say in syndication" schtick. The rest of his show was him getting drunk and hitting on the woman who played the blonde nurse.
here we see the vulcan eye wash trick.

In all of my years of telling time, this is the first time that the whole "setting back the clocks" suprised me. It wasn't a great feeling. In years passed, I was militant about it. Going to the official government time page and syncing all of my clocks and watches to it. Usually the car was last - I can never remember how to do that. Maybe up until this year, I had too much time on my hands. remember: "even though time has wings - it's us that have to fly"

I am going to try to get to las-o-palooza - it's Friday, right? Are yous guys goin' ? UNANSWERABLE QUESTIONS for november: How does NJ transit know when I have to get to work early, so they can make the trains short and late? Most of the time when I look at the clock, it's 5:19. During both AM and PM. Why do people who get paid to drive end up being the worst drivers? What does OK really stand for? Really. Why are there no "in and out burgers" near us? Why is pizza just not good when you leave the tri state area?....you know what, not tri state - I'll even say the bi state area. There is no good pizza in CT. Maybe Nino's in New Haven. Maybe. Why do the days drag and the years fly? Why does sprite give me bad breath and 7up does not? Where are all the robots? It's 2005!

I fell on the short side of a deal with my son and ended up at toys r us yesterday. Back in the day, at this very rt 10 location - I would walk into the store and feel as if I had just a walked through the pearly gates. After about 20 years, I am sad to report it has lost most of its luster. The place is the same, but I guess I have grown up. A bit. It was like watching the old news footage of 60's love-ins in central park. Drugged youth knowing only the self and not of the square establishment trying just to find a quick fusion monster for their son before he starts to want everything in sight. Kids crying. Saying, "I need this, I need this" and the parents saying, "you have that at home". "BUT I NEED THIS NOW" To make matters worse they were playing BAD Christmas music. Disney filtered wishes for a good "gift day" or something. I was proud of my wee one. He was focused - kept his eyes on the prize. We grabbed the "fusion guy" and we hit the road. The sounds of leaf blowers are making me feel guilty. The big hair dryers seem to be saying, "you should be raking....you should be outside....doing stuff....not just sitting on the stoop and watching everyone else work". I laugh them off. Ha! I might have a messy lawn, but my back feels like a few hundres euros. And the exchange rate right now for euros are high, if you know what I'm saying. I would rather cook all day. A stir here. Soccer with the wee one there. A day dream here. A cool frosty nap there. I love Sundays. I love warm fall weather. I love not raking. Why rake? It's like taking paint off a canvas just to say you have a clean canvas. (at least that's how I look at it). Of course I'll rake. But I'll do it once. When all the leaves are down. It seems obvious. |

Buzzsaw - I can answer one of your unanswerable questions. OK comes from Pres. Martin Van Buren. His nickname was "Old Kinderhook" (From the town he grew up in.) He had to sign many documents so he used to initials OK. Although, how it caught on to the public I could not even guess. |

OK, from the Straight Dope, http://www.straightdope.com/classics/a2_250
Quote: What does "OK" stand for? Dear Cecil: This question seems like such an obvious candidate for your column that someone must have asked it before. But on the chance no one has, here goes: what does "OK" stand for, and where does the expression come from? I've heard a lot of different explanations over the years. --Norm, Chicago Dear Norm: Yeah, and it's about time I got things cleared up. Despite the fact that the origin of OK was conclusively established 30 years ago, few etymological dictionaries, even recent ones, give it accurately. On the contrary, some persist in giving equal time to explanations that have been discredited for decades. Eric Partridge, in Origins (1983), says OK derives from the OK Club, which supported Martin "Old Kinderhook" Van Buren in 1840. That isn't wrong, but it's only half the story. William and Mary Morris, in the Morris Dictionary of Word and Phrase Origins (1977), mention the OK Club and give several other theories as well, including the off-the-wall idea that OK comes from "Aux Cayes," a port in Haiti noted for its rum. They imply the matter is still shrouded in mystery. Baloney. The etymology of OK was masterfully explained by the distinguished Columbia University professor Allen Walker Read in a series of articles in the journal American Speech in 1963 and 1964. The letters, not to keep you guessing, stand for "oll korrect." They're the result of a fad for comical abbreviations that flourished in the late 1830s and 1840s. Read buttressed his arguments with hundreds of citations from newspapers and other documents of the period. As far as I know his work has never been successfully challenged. The abbreviation fad began in Boston in the summer of 1838 and spread to New York and New Orleans in 1839. The Boston newspapers began referring satirically to the local swells as OFM, "our first men," and used expressions like NG, "no go," GT, "gone to Texas," and SP, "small potatoes." Many of the abbreviated expressions were exaggerated misspellings, a stock in trade of the humorists of the day. One predecessor of OK was OW, "oll wright," and there was also KY, "know yuse," KG, "know go," and NS, "nuff said." Most of these acronyms enjoyed only a brief popularity. But OK was an exception, no doubt because it came in so handy. It first found its way into print in Boston in March of 1839 and soon became widespread among the hipper element. It didn't really enter the language at large, however, until 1840. That's when Democratic supporters of Martin Van Buren adopted it as the name of their political club, giving OK a double meaning. ("Old Kinderhook" was a native of Kinderhook, New York.) OK became the warcry of Tammany hooligans in New York while beating up their opponents. It was mentioned in newspaper stories around the country. Van Buren's opponents tried to turn the phrase against him, saying that it had originated with Van Buren's allegedly illiterate predecessor, Andrew Jackson, a story that has survived to this day. They also devoted considerable energy to coming up with unflattering interpretations, e.g., "Out of Kash, Out of Kredit, and Out of Klothes." Newspaper editors and publicists around the country delighted in coming up with even sillier interpretations-- Oll Killed, Orfully Konfused, Often Kontradicts, etc.--so that by the time the campaign was over the expression had taken firm root nationwide. As time went on, though, people forgot about the abbreviation fad and Old Kinderhook and began manufacturing their own etymologies. Here's a sampling: (1) It's a derivative of the Choctaw Indian affirmative "okeh." Andrew Jackson, who figures in many stories about OK, is said to have introduced the word to the white man. (2) Another Jackson story has it that he used to mark OK for "oll korrect" on court documents. In the one example of this that was actually unearthed, however, the OK was found actually to be OR, for "order recorded," a common courthouse abbreviation. (3) It was a telegraphic signal meaning "open key," that is, ready to receive. Others say OK was used for "all right" because A and R had already been appropriated for other purposes. Big problem with this theory: the first telegraph message was transmitted in 1844, five years after OK appeared. (4) It stands for O. Kendall & Sons, a supplier of army biscuits that stamped its initials on its product. (5) It comes from Aux Cayes, already discussed. A variant is that it comes from the French au quai, "to the dock," said of cotton that had been approved for loading on a ship. (6) It stands for Obediah Kelly, a railroad freight agent, who used to mark his initials on documents to indicate all was in order. (7) It comes from the Greek Olla Kalla, "all good." (8) A German general who fought on the side of the Americans in the Revolutionary War used to sign documents OK for Ober-Kommando. There are dozens of other interpretations, all equally knuckleheaded. Pay them no mind. If Professor Read says OK = oll korrect, that's good enough for me. --CECIL ADAMS

The most amazing thing happened yesterday. I got a copy of the first Bruce Springsteen and the E Street band album (the one where it says greetings from asbury park). Now, I know this is not a hard thing to. I never really paid much attention to Bruce - I saw this most recent acoustic tour, and also a show from the Rising tour as a casual listener. Mostly because my friends had an extra ticket for me. Anyway - I don't know much of his work and always steered away from him because people assumed that since I was from NJ I loved Bruce. So - I got to hear the album yesterday, as if it came out yesterday. I must have listened to the song "spirit in the night" about 100 times. Good God them are great horns and back up vox there. I also didn't eat catsup until about my Freshman year in college. I just didn't. My parents never had it, so I didn't. Anyway. I remember eating catsup in college and thinking, "I have been really missing out". I will never eat canned tuna, never. |
