I'm very careful with my codeine cough syrup and I hoard it. It is amazingly effective for sleeping w/bronchitis. (Sigh)

I am sooo exhausted, here it is after midnight again, and I'm on my 2nd load of laundry that MUST get done tonight. Tomorrow I pack up and Thursday morning we roll out to Niagara Falls on our way to the Black Family Reunion 2005 (www.blackreunion2005.com).

My brother and his fiancee arrived from Portland, OR this afternoon and were picked up by my sweetheart brother-in-law. Sister made a delicious dinner, then we walked down to Cold Stone Creamery for some ice cream (we stopped by just to say hi to Pizzaz & Leslie, so he could introduce his fiancee). He also met up w/some high school friends that he probably hasn't seen in 15+ years (mem, you'd know them). Walked back to my sister's house, they (brother and FSIL) packed enough clothes to last through Thursday and stowed the rest of their luggage in my car. They'll train it into NYC then up to Pleasantville, NY, to catch a ride to the renunion with my oldest sister and her family.

My dad may or may not accompany my niece and me on our drive up. Hope he'll ignore the speedometer if he does! .

But I am exhausted beyond words. Hope to get to bed by 1 so I can get up and get to work early tomorrow. Too much to do before I go (and I'm only taking 3 days off!).

Anyways, I probably won't have a lot of time for MOL, but I'll be bringing a laptop/camera w/me, so if I have time, I will surely check in (and show some of my out of state sisters/brothers the dead party pix).

Happy belated 4th, all! Hope to see you soon.

I'm here at the reunion resort for 15 minutes and I already have a new friend:

Think I'll have a problem at the border if I try to bring him home?

bets, don't know if you're serious or not - I crossed the border with cats more times than I really want to think about. No problem either way. We had documentation of shots, etc., which you supposedly need - but they never asked for it. No biggie. Kitty might want a tranquilizer for a long car trip though (you drove? airports might be tricker.). s/he looks pretty well-fed though, so might have a human already.

Hey CLK,

I found him a home with some cousins in Ontario that have a farm. I thought he'd be a barncat (still better than a dead cat, right?), but Katie the 11-year-old fell in love and I have a strong feeling that he'll be a house cat. They're naming him "Eli" after me.

It took awhile to get it organized, but I left Canada knowing that this sweetie-pie, snuggly purring machine will live his life beyond the 5 months or so he has already achieved. The resort staff were cheering me on in my quest and provided the extra box and tape for transport out to the farm.

I hope to see him soon. I keep forgetting what a great family I have up north. There were 290 attendees at the reunion, about 40 less than the last (1984). I'm hoping to visit Toronto (by plane; I will NEVER EVER drive there again) in the fall.

What a trip! Adventure and fun from beginning to practically the end. But that's for the private blog. Here are some pix from my immediate family's mini-reunion in Niagara Falls on Thursday:

Edited to add: He was definitely abandoned, along with 3 siblings, who were adopted by staff. He was going to the shelter today if he didn't find a home. The picture doesn't show his young age or worn down condition.

Cool, bets. Good news about kitty - I'm glad he got a nice home and wasn't traumatized by the long drive to NJ. Even if he ends up being a barn cat, you're right that that's a heck of a lot better than being a dead cat.

"Eli," isn't that cute?

Kerrie! I can't believe you remembered how to get here! I am still resizing/cropping my pix and will post them to flickr and my Livejournal blog when I'm done. I got yours and loved them, but the email I sent back to you bounced. Hopefully, my pix will go out tonight. I got a great one of you girls shortly before you took the stage at the talent show.

Lucy, it's good to be back, especially after getting a bit lost while homebound in Canada on Sunday. The reunion was fabulous though too short - there were 290+ black family members present. My Dad was wonderful and things are going well in that regard. My Dad was the "speaker" for our branch of the family and made a beautiful speech that I will post here when I get the chance.

Hi ladies, and thank you for dropping by.

Yes, I'm preparing for the week ahead, Lucy. Dreading it somewhat but totally looking forward to getting it over with. Let's hope I'm up to the task. As many of you know, I can't really talk about my actual life here in my blog openly. Thank Dave&Jamie for the Virtual Cafe, the safest place to post!

SouthOrangeNanny, you rock! Where's my painting (Ralston)?

Highland Lakes, huh? My best friend growing up spent her summers there. If you're hovering around 40 - did you know the Benders or the McCrystals or thr Gentilellas?

We only vacationed for a few weeks each summer until my parents bought a cottage on the main lake in 1982. They didn't move there permanently until 1988. I lived there for 10 months after moving back from Colorado. It was the winter of 1993-1994 - an ice storm every week! That, more than anything, convinced me I can never commute more than 1/2 hour to work.

Did you spend a lot of time up there, Debby? It is gorgeous and so close.

I think I was only there twice - back in the late 70's early 80's. Is it really close? In those days there was nothing NW of Wayne, and it seemed like the end of the earth to me!

Yup. Totally remember how rural it used to be driving up Route 23 past all the farms in Passaic County. Now it's Int. 287 to Rt. 23 and all in under an hour on a good traffic day.

I wish I'd gotten this one in under the wire, but alas!

My parents would've celebrated their 55th wedding anniversary yesterday (8/19/50-8/19/2005). We celebrated the occasion while toasting the employment of two friends earlier tonight.

My, how time flies.

I need inspiration.

I'm expecting 25 students to show up on Monday morning ready for training. It's a weeklong session culminating with Computer Handout on Saturday. Handout involves delivering custom configured IBM Thinkpad R52s or T43s to 400+ students. In 5 hours.

Luckily, I've honed this down to a science over the years, with lots of help from my talented and dedicated co-workers. Lots of stuff is still up in the air, but that's always the case this time of year.

My dilemma is this: I want to focus on customer service this year - pay attention to the customer, talk the truth of the situation w/their computer or assure them that someone who knows will be involved, stop making stuff up.

I'm having faculty and staff members call in simulated calls based on actual ones during "hands-on" sessions scheduled that week. If you've ever had a truly memorable support call from hell that you're willing to share, please privateline it to me, with as much detail, dialogue, and recommended/actual solution memory as possible. My full-time staff and I will be messaging the callers live time, and I'm looking for ideas on coaching both sides.

Thank you.

Bets, I'm too lazy to email this:

I had to deal with the Help Desk at work a couple of days ago and I wanted to pull out my hair. A document (from our numbered doc management program) was no where to be found. (It was a legit doc, I had a printout and it had a doc number on it.) I am not IT, but I am not one of those Problem Sitting In Front of Keyboard types. If I call for help, everything in my power (and my local IT person's power) has been attempted, and it is time for someone to dig deeper. The chick on the other end of the phone would not deviate from her script, and was attempting all the basics, which was simply prolonging my Help. Finally, after I finished retyping the doc, she emailed me that very same document to tell me she found it! I'm sure there's a lesson in there somewhere...
