I was just listening to Greetings from Asbury Park on Friday coming into work for the first time in probably like a year or two. My mp3 player landed on "For You" in shuffle mode and I made it stay on that album for the rest of the morning. Hey, I never ate mac and cheese until I got to college. Seemed totally foreign to me. Why would I put cheese on pasta? Now, of course, my kids would be malnourished without it. BTW, I was in Hoboken a few weeks ago and was disheartened to see that Cosmo's Bakery was closed. I had to go to Vitos to reassure myself that everything would be okay (btw, am I the only person who writes OK as okay?). |

Canned tuna isn't so bad if you do it right - extra virgin olive oil, fresh squeezed lemon juice, finely chopped red onion, celery and carrot, hot pepper flakes, salt, and fresh cracked pepper on a good multi-grain bread. And it looks pretty, too. And to TomD - You're not alone, I always type out "okay" as well. |

TomD- Cosmo's is a loss. If Vito's were ever to go, the town would collapse. My favorite places in Hoboken: Lisa's deli Louise and Jerry's the butcher who's name I can't remember on 11th LEO's Biggie's the over priced produce place La Isla Amanda's and the old Elysian Elk's lodge Maxwell's Guitar Bar louise and jerry's (had to say it twice) I miss Hoboken. Though Maplewood has many charms. I am going to try DiPetro's this weekend for a sub. Strings - I will admit that sounds pretty good, but...I dunno....it is a serious mental leap of faith to eat canned tuna, even if it is all gussied up.

Sosbey's - the over priced produce place (excellent) The butcher is Joe's - (I stopped in there to ask about Cosmo's) Alas, I don't think the "old" Elysian is the old Elysian anymore. I keep telling people: Arthur's makes great burgers, not so great steaks. And they have great big beers. I'm a fan of Anthony David's (10th and Bloomfield)--I haven't been back in quite some time but we were friendly with the owner when he opened (his daughter is, I think, a year younger then ours). We'd chat on weekend mornings when we stopped in for breakfast and the occasional dinner. And how could you forget:

Why? Why! WHY do I drink coffee? It makes me feel as hollow and fragile as a light bulb. I suppose that is better than yawing through meetings all day. Maybe. Orange! Orange! Orange! Joke from 4 year old: why are there leaves outside? Because it's leafy! (It needs a little work before show time)

LIFE LESSON: So, anyway - I'm cooking dinner last night for myself and I burn the dickens out of my hand. I seared a steak quickly on both sides throw some mushrooms on top and then throw the cast iron skillet into the oven at about 350 degrees. Let it cook for a bit. Then I grab an oven mit, which seemed to have gotten a bit wet from me washing the mushrooms - put the thing on and go to grab the skillet. **PAIN**ANGIUSH**STARS**SKIN BOILING** I was able to get the food on to a stable surface and yell naughty words, and then put my hand under cold water. I am not sure what happened - but the wet oven mit seems to have boiled on contact of the skillet. lesson learned: wet oven mits = bad
I got so mad at the mit, I took it out of mit rotation and cut it up into small pieces and threw it away. The cutting into small pieces bit was me trying to get back at the mit. I know.....but this mit was bad. |

Sure Mayor - I bet you're the type to take splinters out with pins too. My trusted doctor (the internet) said this: "Try to avoid popping the blister unless it's in an especially awkward place, such as the bottom of your foot. The blister provides a sterile environment for the skin underneath. Breaking it makes the area more susceptible to infection." I like the part about an "awkward place". Make the mind kind of wonder. You woud be amazed at the amount of everyday motions that are impeeded by this blister. I had to shake some hands this morning at a breakfast meeting, and I felt like I was giving people some kind of secret handshake. Evertime I go to get something in my pocket I am reminded of that steak that did me wrong. Why? Why, Oh sweet steak? |

I actually do take out splinters with pins. Maybe a pop wouldn't be as healthy, but I would imagine that there would be a sense of satisfaction after taking those suckers out. |

I just got fooled by spam. The sender's name and the subject were just so....real. I knew the name and the subject line was something like "hey man". I know what you're saying - big deal. But it is. After opening it and reading some of it - I have decided to give up writing. I LOVE THE NECESSITY OF RETURNING!! It is such a timely pice of spam. It sounds so Thanksgiving. Anyway. I can't do much of anything. I still have these blisters which are starting to freak me out. " Dadaism - Movement originating during and after World War One emphasizing the incongruous and accidental while mocking the traditions of art. " I am all about dadaism. And as Gump said, That's all I have to say about that. I woke up this morning to find that I had an 8 foot tree branch sticking out of the ground. It was an amazing feeling. It was early and my brain could not understand why. My brain just kept saying over and over, "there is a huge branch sticking up out of the ground, why? there is a huge branch sticking up out of the ground, why?" After a while I put one and one together (wind + huge old branch = huge branch sticking out of the ground)
It looks really cool. You can't really get the coolness from this picture. (NOTE TO NEIGHBORS: I pledge to rake and take this stick out really soon, I promise) Like most poeple did in their 20's, I went through a Jack Kerouac faze. I had no family of my own and not much else going on - so there was something very attractive about hitting the road and seeing what happens. Anyway, one day I decided that I wanted to see something handwritten by Jack with my own two eyes (one eye working much better than the other) to make what I was reading more basic and human - as opposed to reading something that was written by an icon. (from reading bios on Jack - this was exactly how he intended his work to be read. I think the icon thing is what caused him to go out really bad at the end of his life) So, I had just read that the Berg collection at the NY Public library had just aquired many of Jack's old notebooks as part of their permanent collection. I decided that I needed to see this. I went to the library to see if I could see what I wanted to see. It started out easy. I got a card. I found the room where the Berg collection was housed and walked in the door. "Hi. I am working on a project and I would like to know how I can get to look through the Kerouac notebooks recently added to the Berg collection." "You can't just walk in here asking to see the Kerouac notebooks. It's like walking into the Lourve and asking to take the Mona Lisa down and inspect it with your hands." "I didn't know it was that complicated. Well, don't I feel like the fool. I am working on a dadaist short story and this is a key scene in the story". This was a lie, but hey - I wanted to see what would happen. I wan't scared of this guy....Mr. Lourve talking guy. "Oh really I have never heard of a dadaist short story. What is it?" He said. "I just follow the plot line, I don't come up with it" (what a crock). "Oh. Who plays me in the story" he asked, starting to calm down a bit. "You do, of course" "Hold on" He went into the back room and came out with a notebook which he carried on a pillow. On the cover, the notebook said 'mexico city'. "You can look at this page only, for one minute. I hope this helps your story." I don't remember reading anything. I just remember thinking that Jack must have pressed really hard on the pages with the pencil. The letters were honest and almost like braille. I sunk it in and told the man thanks. He wished me luck with my story. I felt bad that I had lied about writing a story. I did send him a thank you post card a few days later with the Mona Lisa on the front. I don't read Kerouac too much anymore. But I try to keep a bit of that free spirt spark in my stride. Right now I am either reading American History books or comic books.
Life is funny. I had one of those moments yesterday. Seeing my Grandmother hold my new son was triple exelent. She lives in a nursing home now - but we were able to bust her out for the day. She's not at sharp as she was, but she's still there. Though we'll be talking about kids, life, liberty and all that jazz - and out of the blue she'll ask me if I blew the pilot light out. I'll stop for just a second and try to figure it out and then just say, "yes, yes I did" She did call my son a "honey bunch" yesterday. She used to call me that. The torch has been passed. Have you turned out the pilot light?

What is time? Think about it - what is the definition of time? I said the measurement of existence. The person who posed the question said it was the measurement of change. Something to think about. I have to say, I had good day yesterday. I took the day off to rake and take care of some stuff at home. In terms of things I have to do for home upkeep, there are few things I hate more than raking. But here is my list of things worse than raking: weeding painting That's about it. I love to mow the lawn. Hate to rake the leaves. What I really love is to throw down grass seed. Now that I could do all day.

The best part about raking a large amount of leaves is the part when the leaves blow back on to your lawn. That's the best part, the part I really like. Mulchy! I live in a house built in the '50's that was put on land owned by the two homes next to me that are the oldest on the block - I think late 1800's (not too sure - but I do know they are old). Every year when I rake in a certain part of the yard I find really old glass and ceramic pieces. I save some of the cool ones. I feel like my property was some kind of garbage dump or something. Hey! Go figure. I would love to know how old these pieces are. Any glass experts out there? Maybe I sould post these in the history section. And tomorrow will be December. How is that possible? How is it December of the year two thousand and five? Wow. Wow-we wow-we. I love Christmas - or as it is known now, "annual sale month for giving gifts to loved ones". Stevie Nicks was in my dream last night. I don't listen to her music and own no Fleetwood Mac or her solo stuff. But I had a dream I was in a bar with Stevie Nicks and we were putting together the song list to her greatest hits cd that was to come out for the annual sale month for gift giving to loved ones. I tried to kiss her. She said she would not kiss me unless I agreed that "stop dragging my heart around" should be put on the cd. In my dream I seemed to have a big problem with Tom Petty. "No, Tom Petty is on that - it can't be on your CD". I didn't get to make out with Stevie Nicks. Oh well. And then, in wonderful dream fashion, I drove a van backwards to my home in Erie Pennsylvania.

Magilla gorilla was one of my favorite shows growing up. I loved the song, magilla's hat and all the trouble that seemed to find magilla. What's not to like? I was so happy when magilla was available on demand through the boomerang channel. I got home late from a Christmas party last night and decided to watch it. The owner (who's name excapes me right now, I want to say spacely - but that's not it) gets so upset that he can't sell magilla he says, "if I can't get rid of that ape I'm going to get rid of myself.....goodbye cruel gorilla world"
And then tries to kill himself ! Luckly he had magilla's water pistol and it was filled with water. Though magilla had the real gun and shot it off in the air. How the hell would I explained this to my kid? I met a cartoonist from hanna barbara a while back and he said during the 70's they had what was called the "vodka club" and they would get loaded at work on Friday's. That explains a lot. Although I turned out "fine" watching this stuff - I would rather have the reefer smoking boobah creaters entertaining my kids than the vodka club. I dunno. Different times I suppose. My favorite show, match game pm - looked to be a booze fest. I really think they should bring that back with all the unPC things that made it great. The sexually charged questions, the loaded celebs and the huge phallic microphone. Now that's entertainment! I keep reading all these articles about the sagging box office numbers that hollywood is dealing with. Boo hoo... Anyway, here's an idea: stop making movies about 70's tv shows and take a few risks. speaking of risks, take a look at this dear that jumped though a store window... Idea for movie: a man gets caught in a dear's body and jumps through a store window to save a little child from shooting a water pistol. Later in the movie, jack black says some really funny sarcastic stuff. genius! |

Hey, it was good to meet you, mrs straw and the young straw. a fine group! ++++++++++++ Maybe it is becasue I don't sleep much anymore - but I was listening to Howard Stern this morning and I got a bit misty. I've been listening to Howard since he first started at wNbc. And sure, I hate ralph, I have to turn it off when it is too poopy centric and feel that he can go over board. BUT, there have been times that I had to pull my car over because I was laughing too hard. I was even on the air as a call in on the nbc show. I was asked if I thought victoria principal was hot. At the time I was in fifth grade and said yeah, I though she was hot. He said something like at your age you think anything is hot. AHHH howard. Anyway - yeah, I got all misty when they played clips from all the people that died that used to be on the show. I would also like to mention that I feel Howard on 9/11 was amazing. I remember listening that day thinking the world was over and being somewhat calmed down by Howard. Can't say I am going to buy a sirius radio quite yet. F jackie.
