We're working on a project and wondered if anyone had any old photos of a baseball game in the two towns, or a baseball team or something of interest having to do with baseball in Maplewood and south Orange. You could answer here or email me at deanne@maplewood.net. Thanks for your help. |

We just bought that small history book on South Orange, the one that's part of a series for all the towns around. There are numerous baseball photos; it seems they used to have semi-pro ball in South Orange. Anyway, look it up and maybe you can get to the original source, which is probably local. |

Most of the photos used in the South Orange book were credited to people and organizations within the community or with ties to it. Each photo has its own credit, so you may get some help there. |

There was a semi-pro team in Maplewood in the late 50's or 60's. They were called the Maplewood Maples I belive. And played at Memorial Park. |

In doing research for our South Orange video documentary: ONCE UPON A GASLIGHT..A WALKING TOUR OF SOUTH ORANGE" I have talked with and interviewed many citizens & oral historians from South Orange. Surprisingly, I am considered a "new resident" though I have lived her for 25 years. Many stories pass on from generation to generation and sometimes become myth through the retelling. Sorting truth from myth is the hard part. And sometimes you dont want to destroy the myth but wish to preserve the memory, even if it is slightly altered. But--here is what I have been told. There was a semi-pro ball team in SO Township called "THE SOUTH ORANGE GIANTS"(before the split into two towns, South Orange and Maplewood, 1926) and it was sponsored by the then owner of the NY Giants Baseball team--HORACE STONEHAM. Horace Stoneham is said to have used rocks from the SO Township Quarry to build the original stadium(baseball, not football GIANTS)in NYC. Several local businessmen helped support the team, though Stoneham sponsored it--called The South Orange Giants, including several men who dontated their time to the SO Dept of Recreation. One of these men was a Mr. Gury. Mr. Stoneham also owned a hardware(I was told two stores) store on SO Avenue in SO for many years and built a house on corner of Prospect Street and Sherman Place for his daughter as a wedding present. This 1898 home is still a wonder with some of the most incredible wood work anywhere in SO, and I have seen many incredible historic homes. Mr. Stoneham got the uniforms for the SO Players where he purchased uniforms for his real GIANTS baseball team. Mr Stoneham left the area in the 1940's to go to California, so I am told. We have photos in our archives for the SO Movie project so let me know what you would like to use since many of these photos were freely give/shared by us with the author of the SO book.I believe many are part of the public domain but I can help you determine this I think. ACTUALLY, we at our filmc llaborative are looking for photos, video footage, 8MM, 16mm film from days gone by, including any parades of baseball players. ANYONE HAVE FILM OR PHOTOS? Nhg.
