I was lucky enough to get my hands on an 11 page profile of an architect James Oscar Betelle, who I knew designed CHS and the other similiar looking buildings in Maplewood and South Orange. Turns out he designed a few more... So here is the short list of Maplewood (&SO)buildings, all designed by the same guy, and how much they cost:

Columbia -- 1.5 Million in 1926 (most expensive single building he ever designed, more $$ than Robert Treat Hotel or the Essex County Courthouse)
Maplewood Middle School -- $500k, only the portion facing Burnet
Clinton -- 300k
First St School (on 1st st in SO, now renovated into offices) 135k
Jefferson 225k
Marshall 165k
Montrose 245k
Seth Boyden 275 k
Tuscan 400k (why so much?)
South Mountain 275k
Maintence Building by train tracks on Parker 50k
Maplewood Municipal Building 210k

If anyone wants a copy of the typed up records I'll PDF it monday at work and send it around. Include email address in any privatelines

-John

John-

In your travels, if you ever encounter any info on the Maplewood Archetect, D. Wentworth Wright, (1930/1940)
I would love to see it.

Thanks...another closet researcher,

Patty
