The Durand-Hedden House and Garden in Maplewood invites the public to its April program titled, "New Jersey and the Underground Railroad" on Sunday, April 23 1:30 - 4:00 p.m. Giles Wright, historian and director of the Afro-AMerican history program for the New Jersey Historical Commission, will describe the significance and reality of the Underground Railroad, the secret network of people and places used to assist runaway slaves from the South to find freedom in the northern states and Canada. His slide presentation will focus on the routes, sites and persons associated with the UGRR's operation in New Jersey. The 1:30 p.m. talk is admission free and will be located at the Jefferson School auditorium at 518 Ridgewood Road in Maplewood. There will be a reception at the Durand-Hedden House across the street at 523 Ridgewood Road following the talk at 3:00 p.m. This program is offered through the Horizon's Speakers Bureau of the New Jersey Council for the Humanities, a state partner of the National Endowment for the Humanities.} |
